Michael Vick has been indicted by a federal grand jury in connection with the dogfighting probe of his property in Virginia.

The indictment alleges that Vick and his co-defendants began sponsoring dogfighting in early 2001, the former Virginia Tech star's rookie year with the Falcons.

The Falcons quarterback was indicted for conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities and to sponsor a dog in an animal fighting venture in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District in Richmond, Va. Three others -- Purnell Peace, Quanis Phillips and Tony Taylor -- also were indicted by the grand jury on the same charges.

The indictment states: "If convicted on the Travel Act portion of the conspiracy charge, each defendant faces a statutory maximum of five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and full restitution. If convicted on the animal fighting venture portion of the conspiracy charge, each defendant faces one year in prison, a $100,000 fine, or both. The indictment also includes a forfeiture allegation seeking recovery of any property constituting, or derived from, proceeds obtained directly or indirectly as a result of these offenses. "

According to court documents filed by federal authorities earlier this month, dog fights have been sponsored by "Bad Newz Kennels" at the property since at least 2002. For the events, participants and dogs traveled from South Carolina, North Carolina, Maryland, New York, Texas and other states.

Members of the venture also knowingly transported, delivered and received dogs for animal fighting, the documents state.

Fifty-four pit bulls were recovered from the property during searches in April, along with a "rape stand," used to hold dogs in place for mating; an electric treadmill modified for dogs; and a bloodied piece of carpeting, the documents said.

The property was used as the "main staging area for housing and training the pit bulls involved in the dog fighting venture," according to the filings.

State and federal officials load coolers of evidence into a truck as they search the grounds behind a home owned by Michael Vick in Smithfield, Va., on July 6.

The documents said the fights usually occurred late at night or in the early morning and would last several hours. The winning dog would win from "hundreds up to thousands of dollars," and participants and spectators also would place bets on the fight.

Before fights, the participating dogs of the same sex would be weighed and bathed, according to the filings. Opposing dogs would be washed to remove any poison or narcotic placed on the dog's coat that could affect the other dog's performance. Sometimes participants would not feed a dog before the fight to "make it more hungry for the other dog," the documents said.

Fights would end when one dog died or with the surrender of the losing dog, which was sometimes put to death by drowning, strangulation, hanging, gun shot, electrocution or some other method, according to the documents. The property has an above-ground swimming pool, and investigators were seen looking into the pool Friday.

During a June search of the property, investigators uncovered the graves of seven pit bulls that were killed by members of "Bad Newz Kennels" following sessions to test whether dogs would be good fighters, the documents said.

Members of "Bad Newz Kennels" also sponsored and exhibited fights in other parts of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, New Jersey and other states, the filings said.

On June 7, federal law enforcement officials descended on the property with a search warrant. More than a dozen vehicles went to the home early that day and investigators searched inside before turning their attention to the area where officials found dozens of dogs in late April and evidence that suggested the home was involved in a dogfighting operation.

Surry County officials had secured a search warrant in late May based on an informant's information to look for as many as 30 dog carcasses buried on the property. The warrant never was executed because Commonwealth's Attorney Gerald G. Poindexter said he had issues with the way it was worded.

The results of that search have remained sealed.

At the time, Poindexter expressed surprise at why the federal government was involved.

"What is foreign to me is the federal government getting into a dogfighting case," Poindexter said. "I know it's been done, but what's driving this? Is it this boy's celebrity? Would they have done this if it wasn't Michael Vick?"

A day later, "They launched a separate, independent federal investigation," Poindexter said of the government, which has had a representative involved in the local probe all along.

A search warrant affidavit said some of the dogs were in individual kennels and about 30 were tethered with "heavy logging-type chains" buried in the ground. The chains allowed the dogs to get close to each other, but not to have contact, one of myriad findings on the property that suggested a dogfighting operation.

Vick initially said he had no idea the property might have been used in a criminal enterprise and blamed family members for taking advantage of his generosity. He also put the house up for sale and reportedly sold it quickly, although there is no record that the sale has closed. Vick has since declined to talk about the investigation.

As a dog owner I'm just disgusted.

If he's found guilty I hope they throw the book at him and lock him up.

If he pleads out and avoids jail time, I hope the NFL throws the book at him and suspends him.

I know it hasn't went to trial but when the Feds indict it's usually bad news,

He may be able to play this season because the rulebook says that pending the legal process, he can still play.

He is going down for this one. I'd expect that his buddies in this deal will turn on him to get a better deal and then he will have to turn on people as well to try to save his own ass. Usually when the Federal Government convicts you of something you are not getting out of it. They don't lose many of these types of cases.

I think his best option would be to start talking right now before everyone else does the same against him. Regardless I'll be surprised if he doesn't get some jail time for this. Actually I hope he does, it is much deserved for what he did to those animals.

Why someone who makes 20+ million a year wants to watch/finance dog fights is beyond me. There are so many other things that you can do in life that are not so asinine.

I read this yesterday and almost died laughing. I love it when rich people get caught doing something stupid.

What an ass.

Pitbulls have been outlawed in the Greater Detroit, and Metropolitain area because of fuckheads like this. If Animal Control see one not on a chain, or even in your backyard, they get a warrant, seize your animal and put it down. Then I believe the owner receives a heafty fine.

I've seen dogs at shelters that are missing chunks of their bodies because of dogfighting. There was one dog, taken in by human society. He wasn't illegal because he was half Pit, half American Bull. The owners put a tourniquet around each of his ears, so they would go dead and fall off. That way, when fighting, the opponents dog couldn't get him into a tear and wound the dog. His ears were seriously infected, puss seeping out of them, so they chained him to a dumpster and left him in an alley to die.

He was found and rescued, since been adopted. No longer malnourished and fat and happy loving his family and their children. Just slightly more aerodynamic.

People that do this to animals need to be punished in severe ways. Dogs are not born mean, just like people. They become that way from environment and learned behavior. Put him in a dog fight... see how great he is then...

I agree, I'm ridiculously in love with my dog, and all dogs little big doesn't matter dogs rock.
They should cover his nuts in some cow blood and put him in a pit with 3-4 American Staffordshire Terriers and let them lose dog fighting sickens me:nono:

Vick's a scum bucket... For anybody that was in Atlanta and had any interaction, this doesn't suprise at all. Now whether the image conscious office staff of Atlanta will do anything is what interests me more...

Especially since they traded Schaub away.

Just imagine all the things you could do with that kind of money. Travel the fucking world with first class all the way. Have the time of your life, live your dreams. But this scum bag spends his time fighting...dogs. Its just mind boggling. And I honestly cannot understand how anyone would find pleasure in doing such a thing.

If hes convicted, he will likely be suspended for at least a year, and more than likely it will be an indefinite suspension. He'll likely get some jail time, its pretty serious offence now isnt it? I'd hope so with how much attention the Feds are putting into this.

Its going to take quite a long time before this is over though. The legal process is slow, the trial wont even be close to starting when this NFL season is over. And the commissioner isnt going to do anything to Vick until hes found guilty since he is not a repeat offender like Pacman Jones and Tank Johnson were.

I used to watch the animal planet cop show, and people who actually physically ran pit bull "farms" barely got fines and less than 6 months in jail.

We dont even know what his involvement is, his friends/family are split as to what his involvement is, and it's going to turn into a he says she says.

He's probably a target of all sorts of people trying to extort money from him since this has come out, and wouldn't be surprised some of the jigs speaking against him didn't get what they wanted.

lololol another stupid famous person goes to jail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can take the star QB out of the ghetto, but you can't take the ghetto out of the star QB.

He shouldn't even be a star with how many seasons he's missed due to leg injuries. Not to forget he doesn't have a good arm for throwing. He's essentially a running back that was told to play quarterback because he could probably throw further than most guys in his high school. Seriously just make him a running back.

All I have to say is the odds of this being related to Tank Johnson are pretty damn good since Tank had two pit bulls.

People dont fight their personal dogs on this level of fighting.

I'm also pretty sure about 20 teams would love to have Micheal Vick's talent on their team behind center, including da bears.

Actually I would rather have Rex Grossman over Micheal Vick because at least Grossman doesn't miss whole seasons. No one will pay Vick's contract especially if he loses. Hell I am damn sure surprised Roger Goodell hasn't done anything already in this case because Goodell has taken to ruling the NFL with an iron fist. I am just waiting for the day that Goodell announces that the whole Cincinnati Bengals except Carson Palmer is suspended for the rest of the season.

So you're backing off the whole vick vs tank pit bull matches? Glad you've come to your senses.

As far as Goodell, he's come down on repeat offenders. This is Vick's first offense, so don't get too excited about seeing him suspended. It may take up to 48 months before trial even begins.

And as for the the whole Vick missing whole seasons...lol where does your peabrain come up with this. Look at their stats, or here, I'll show you.

Vick has missed 2 games in the past 3 seasons, he was injured 4 years ago in preseason, and played at the end of the season, the year prior he started and played in 15 games, only missing one.

Last season he rushed for over 1k yards, and threw for 2400, giving him 300 more yards than grossman total, which is negligiable, but he had a much better (20/13 vs 23/20).

Micheal Vick is a threat, McNabb a threat, Palmer a threat, Manning a threat, these players have coaches up all night thinking of ways to stop them, no one is worried about Grossman, he's like Trent Dilfer when the Ravens won the Super Bowl, just did enough to get by, and let his defense do the rest.

PS: You asked what my problem was with you, and this is a clear example, you talk out of your ass making shit up as you go along. People call you on it and you dissapear. Well, it's my turn to show you up, and I have stone cold numbers to prove you're an idiot, now run away.

I agree, but disagree. McNabb had Stallworth, Owens, and the like. Palmer has Chad Johnson and T.J., Manning has Harrison and Wayne. Vick has...? Finneran? NO! Ashley Lelie? NO! Alge Crumpler is his one and only viable target.

Comparing those 4 isn't even fair because of the extremely different systems that they play in. Atlanta's team is built around Vick, and running the football, and has been fairly successful when Vick has been healthy. Sure, they haven't been to the promised land, but they have been very successful over the last few seasons, and have been contenders every year since 2002.

People say the QB is the most difficult position in all of sports, and I would probably agree with that, but sometimes that isn't the end-all be-all. The Bucs won with Dilfer. The Steelers won with a slumping Roethlisberger (<3). Sometimes you get lucky. Football is the ultimate parity because any team can get hot and take it.

If the best QB won every year, the Colts would have won the last 5 Championships. Thats not how it works.

I wasn't comparing them, I was putting them in the same class. They are all players who keep defensive players and coaches up on saturday nights. Imagine Vick with a real set of recievers, and there is no stopping him.

I was saying Vick is a much better QB and any team, including the bears would want him.

As for QBs and the SB...well look at history, hell look at the Pats. A solid quarterback will more often than not get you deep in teh playoffs and the SB. Yes the Dilfers and Johnsons (TB winner, not Dilfer) will happen, but the Brady's, Young's, Montana's, Elway's will get you there more often.

Yet Vick can't take his team all the way. Yes I know The Saints were in the NFC South along with the Falcons, but years prior why can't he get the job done if he's so amazing? As far as Vick's charges they're far more serious than Johnson's charges because Vick is getting federal indictments where as Tank was only held in prison at Cook County.

Vick is risking federal prison. I can't remember, but isn't there still controversy over Vick's water bottle hidden compartment? Micheal Vick has a trail as much does Tank, Pacman, and 9 of the Begal players.

As far as Grossman versus Vick I would still rather have Grossman who had freak injuries as a quarter back over Vick who simply can't get the job done. Yes you will bring up the point that Grossman didn't get the job done when he was on the field in the Super Bowl. What you wont mention though is how the Bears defense wasn't doing a damn thing to stop the short passes. That is a big flaw with cover 2 is either the defense gets beat on short passes trying to protect the long bomb, or the defense gets beat at the safety zones by a deep post route going towards the middle of the field.

Now lets bring up Vick's short game as that is all he has. He ran for 1,000 yards as a QB now isn't that the job of a RB? Ya Vick can throw some what, but he barely breaks a 52% on his completion rating (Grossman 54%). Then Rex also threw for over 3,000 yards lets not forget his 45 sacks versus Grossman's 21. Yes go ahead bring up the Bears Offensive line. Vick lost about 7 so did Rex (both coming out to be 6.7 yards if you want to be exact). You want to glorify Vicks running why did he only have 2 touch downs running?

Now we have to bring in the running game as that is what Da Bears focus on offense wise. Thomas Jones out ran Warrick Dunn had more TDs. Cedric Benson 6 TD 647 yards only playing the last few weeks with some red zone touches.

The Bears put forth more of a team effort for winning rather than focusing on one aspect. As Tim said Alge Crumpler was Vick's favorite target. Face it Ashley Lelie isn't a #1 WR. Where as Grossman has Mushin Muhammed, Bernard Berrian (shouldn't be a #2), Mark Bradley, Desmond Clark (even though I don't like him), and Rashied Davis. Now I highly doubt these receivers would be getting many TD, and Desmond Clark who isn't a great catch and run TE nor does he have the hands of the new generation TE of Shockey, Gates, Heap, and Crumpler. Yes yes I know Clark had 6 TDs, but it's taken him too damn long to develop.

Football is a team sport not just a one man show which Vick pretty much is. Although it is Sports Center and they only show clips of people's favorite players. Vick is a one note kind of player that is a scrambling QB until he was put into a west coast offense where short plays dominate and we all know Vick doesn't have the cannon that Grossman does.

Vick
Grossman

Grossman has nothing but leg problems. Vick has problems from scrambling, being tackled more than a QB should, and sacked. Vick will continue to have these problems as long as he's a rushing QB because he's going to get hit a lot. Which will present a problem for a lot of people that would be interested in Vick when he becomes a free agent. They will look at his injuries the amount of times he's been hit with in the seasons. He will be signed by someone if he's not thrown into prison, but the chance of him retiring due to multiple injuries is great as it is with pretty much any scrambler.

You can bring up games he missed, but look at the injuries as to why he missed them.
