Milk.

A mindset I use to keep from consuming unwanted extra calories is to think of soda as a snack or dessert... Face it, you're drinking for the taste, not because you're thirsty... For a long time it was a regular beverage with any meal, and no one should be drinking that much sugar.

I love soda, but I have it only as a treat....

I do drink diet soda, but there are even mroe reasons to avoid that than regular cola.

Milk fulfills different needs for the body. It has Calcium to help bones and such. Stuff that water alone cant do.

I do drink diet soda, but there are even mroe reasons to avoid that than regular cola.

28g? of sugar vs. brain cancer

Go go Aspartame

I rarely drink regular plain old water. I drink a shit ton of juices and ades(Gator, Lemon, Lime, etc..) though.

You're supposed to drink only 2 quarts of water a day? I drink a little over a gallon(4 liters, 3.78 liter/gallon) a day, plus the water in any teas/sodas that I drink.

I mainly only drink water during the afternoon/night. Mornings and afternoons it's all about the caffeine.

You Americans and your measurement system ._.; 2 Litres of water a day is what I understand lol.

And yea, Aspartame can cause Cancer... it also actually aids in peoples weight gain. Only reason to drink diet soda is if you're diabetic. Splenda also has chlorine in it, yummy.

How does it aid in weight gain? I've lost a few pounds since I switched to mainly drinking diet sodas instead of the regular ones.

Cancer I'm not all that worried about, since fucking everything causes cancer nowadays.

Also, blame the brits, they're the ones that came up with this system.

I'll try to find the studies I've read. If you're trying to lose weight, they caution against diet pops etc.

Edit - Well, here's one:

Why Diet Pop and Colas make you fat and sick .
Many times people come in to train with me and ask what can I do to lose weight? One of the very first questions I ask is - Do you drink diet pop?

Effective weight loss starts with diet changes and exercise , one of the first changes is to stop drinking all diet pop all colas , all carbonated beverages - including diet pop , which is the worst . Get the Aspartame out of your diet !

Why? Diet pop is very acidic, with a pH of 1.5 to 2.5 - that is 100,000 times more acid that your body wants to be. Aspartame has a pH of 1.5! All life dies at a pH of 4.5.

Because of this your body creates fat cells to store the extra acid or in this case Aspartame. This is why people who drink diet pop just get fatter.

Your kidneys are the prime pH balancing organs in your body. The body wants to have a general pH of about 7. So when you drink pure water with pH of about 7 or a little higher - you are balancing the pH in your kidneys, and balancing the general pH in the body. When the pH is right the body can release and dispose of stored acids, which are filling the fat cells. This why some clients have had such drastic weight reductions in such a short amount of time, just drink water.

Why is pH so important? If your PH is correct you will have a much less chances of contracting a chronic condition , such as cancer , arthritis , or even the common cold .

There is a direct correlation between pH and your immune system. The Immune system works at its most optimal level, when the body pH is 7.0 - or slightly alkaline.

So when you drink just one diet pop - you drive your pH down, shutting down the immune system, and setting yourself up for a disease to take hold . Drink just one diet pop or cola, you will then have to drink 32 glasses of water with a pH of 7 or more to balance your pH .

Scientists have found that healthy people have body fluids that are slightly alkaline, 7.1 to 7.5 pH. Scientists and doctors have also found that over 150 degenerative diseases are linked to acidity, including cancer, diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, gall and kidney stones, and many more. All diseases thrive in an acidic, oxygen poor environment.

Keep in mind that a drop in every point on the pH scale is10x more acidic than the previous number--i.e. from 7 to 6 is 10x, from 7 to 5 is 100x etc. From 7 to 2 is 100,000x more acidic, colas are in the approximate 2.5 pH range. Almost no soda(pop) is higher than 3.0. Diet sodas are the worst as they have the highest acid content. Actually diet sodas cause you to gain weight because they alter the blood chemistry, making changes in your metabolism, leading to a slower metabolic rate.

The best liquid to drink is water.

Here's another one:

People who drink diet soft drinks don't lose weight. In fact, they gain weight, a new study shows.

The findings come from eight years of data collected by Sharon P. Fowler, MPH, and colleagues at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio. Fowler reported the data at the annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association in San Diego.

"What didn't surprise us was that total soft drink use was linked to overweight and obesity," Fowler tells WebMD. "What was surprising was when we looked at people only drinking diet soft drinks, their risk of obesity was even higher."

In fact, when the researchers took a closer look at their data, they found that nearly all the obesity risk from soft drinks came from diet sodas.

"There was a 41% increase in risk of being overweight for every can or bottle of diet soft drink a person consumes each day," Fowler says.

More Diet Drinks, More Weight Gain
Fowler's team looked at seven to eight years of data on 1,550 Mexican-American and non-Hispanic white Americans aged 25 to 64. Of the 622 study participants who were of normal weight at the beginning of the study, about a third became overweight or obese.

For regular soft-drink drinkers, the risk of becoming overweight or obese was:

26% for up to 1/2 can each day
30.4% for 1/2 to one can each day
32.8% for 1 to 2 cans each day
47.2% for more than 2 cans each day.
For diet soft-drink drinkers, the risk of becoming overweight or obese was:

36.5% for up to 1/2 can each day
37.5% for 1/2 to one can each day
54.5% for 1 to 2 cans each day
57.1% for more than 2 cans each day.
For each can of diet soft drink consumed each day, a person's risk of obesity went up 41%.

Keep in mind, it doesn't *cause* weight gain per se, it aids in it. i.e. if you're trying to lose weight don't drink diet. Then again, if you're trying to lose weight... just stay away from pop all together.

Damn I drink ~ 76 ounces of soda a day >.>

I should be 500 lbs... but Alas I cant gain a fuggin pound if i tried.

If theres on good thing to come out of this thread, its got me to stop drinking soda during work.

Go go go coffee!

Thinking about it Mire, that first article is bogus. Considering that the gastric acid in your stomach is around 0.7 pH, a 2.5 pH wouldn't matter passing through there. That, and the fact that something that acidic would actually hurt you as you drank it.

32 glasses of water for a single coke? If that was true, it'd be all over all of the weight watchers ads and everything else you're spammed with regarding losing weight.

Those aren't the articles that I read, I just didn't have time to search for them again at work lol. The ones I posted were just the first of a long listing. I've heard from numerous studies and doctors that "diet" products are actually worse for your weight than non-diet. I agree that they seem to be going overboard with how much water you should drink if you drink 1 can of pop.

Yes. Same with alcohol actually, I think it's 1 shot = 1 glass of water to rehydrate yourself. Otherwise you get a nasty hangover (in which case... the next morning, eat a banana, I'm not kidding).
