What an ignorant comment. This comment is like saying you can't be advocate of children's rights if you're pro choice.
Anyway, Chas seriously - I"m really glad you're kitten pulled through the night but there may be something else going on inside if she was as bad as you say she was. Try giving a local cat rescue group a call (eg in calgary
http://www.meowfoundation.com/ ) and tell them your situation and that you would like to take your little baby there to a vet but don't have the money right now. They usually know some great/humane vets that would be willing to either do a cheap check up or work out some sort of payment plan to fit your income, or lack of. I'd hate to see her drop dead after doing so well.
As for the declawing thing, I've always felt that furniture < My Pets. Cats can't properly stretch w/o their front claws and may develop back/muscle problems later in life, they can become insecure as they know that they have lost their main line of defense and the whole procedure is incredibly painful. I equate declawing to having your dog's voice box removed because he barks too much. Personally - I Just trim my cat's claws once a week with a human nail trimmer - he can scratch all he wants, can still stretch properly but does no damage to my furniture.
