I recently downloaded an anime movie that was ripped from a Blu Ray disc and encoded to an MKV file, it weighs in at 4.37gigs. I can't get it to play properly in any player, it's laggy and the audio/video/subtitles don't match with each other. I've had this problem with MKVs before and it was always fixed by watching them in DivX, but I've never had one this large before and nothing is working. I assume these playback problems are from my PC not being up to snuff, but I'm hoping someone can help me get this working. I'd hate to think I wasted half of this months bandwidth.

These are the players I've tried:

Media Player Classic
Media Player Classic Home Cinema (I don't know what the difference is, it came with the Combined Community Codec Pack so I tried it.)
VLC
Zoom (This gave me the best results, but it's still not watchable.)
DivX
The Core Media Player
Quicktime
RealPlayer
Windows Media Player

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What are your computer specs?
I had similar problems with HD anime, and dollars to donuts it was my vid card. My comp at that time was over 3 years old though.

Mind you, I haven't tried since I built a new rig, but I'd assume it would be different. If you haven't downloaded a crapton of extra codecs, and just stuck with CCCP, I'd be willing to bet it's your computer. However, the problem might arise from using a codec to trying and decode things that it wasn't meant for.

Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3700+, 2.2GHz
Memory: 1024MB DDR 400 SDRAM
Video Card: Radeon X1900XTX
Motherboard: ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe
Hard Drive 1: Western Digital 250gig
Hard Drive 2: Western Digital 500gig SATA

The only other codec pack I have installed is the old Defiler Pack, which has:

  • ffdshow
  • Haali Media filter
  • VSFilter
  • DivX
  • AC3 XForm filter
  • HDTVPump

The movie was failing to play before I installed CCCP, I installed that hoping it would help. My brother has a slightly better video card than me, so I'm going to try playing it on his PC and see if it's any better. I was pretty sure it was my PC to begin with, but I was hoping there was some way I could get it to work.

I use Winamp to play my .mkv files. Winamp won't play .mkv files by default and has to be enabled in the preference. I use the K-Lite Codec Pack with the default installation settings. I didn't have much trouble (no choppiness or out of sync sound) playing .mkv files and my PC is pretty outdated by today's standard. The only difference that I can notice is the vast size difference between media files and possibly if it's 720p or 1080p. The biggest .mkv file that I've played was maybe 1.5GB @ 720p. Because the .mkv was ripped from a Blu Ray disc, I suspect that the file is in 1080p which may be part of the problem as well.

Have you tried reencoding the video @ 720p or another video format such as DivX? You might lose some quality, but at least it should be watchable.

I can get smaller mkv files to play, I have a few movies and two anime series' that are all mkvs. I went back and tried to play the first part of the movie (it was split into 7 parts that you can join with HJSplit) and even at 700mb the first one wouldn't play properly. It is 1080p, sorry I didn't mention that before, I didn't think about it. The full resolution is 1920x1080 which is wider than my monitor can even display. lol

I don't know how to re-encode videos, but I may look into that tomorrow.

I recommend the CCCP community codec pack. I haven't ran across a file type I cannot play.

Getting the video to play isn't the problem, I need it to stop lagging. Also, I said in the OP that I have CCCP. :P

720p tend to lag most mid-high end comps with the core codecs.

1080p... you know the deal.

Have you tried CoreAVC? It uses less overhead.

Just tried, it didn't help. Doesn't look like I'll be able to get it to work properly.

I think there's your problem. Honestly I've only seen decent performance from a Core2+.

A64 3700~ / PIV 2.4-3.2 was always boggled down.

Edit: Your video card is kind of on the lower end side for HD movies too :(.

Need a card with Ati's h.264 support if you're an ATI fan.

Yeah, I need to upgrade my PC badly, but I decided I didn't want to spend $300 on a temporary fix that would only last a few months. I suppose I'll just hang on to the file and watch it when I eventually buy a new computer.
