Lets list MMO's that the producer though were gonna be HUGGGGE but failed so they had to make it free to play so people would buy it.... ill start with RF online an FURY...

Dark and Light

What was that one with the million dollar prize for a PVP competition or something?
That's one for the list.

LotR:O and Vanguard

FFXI :p kidding

Runescape

yeah FURY had a reward if i remmber correctly it only came out a month and a half ago GOOD GAME, i thought it looked kinda gay

Don't think it was FURY. It came out a year or two ago.

Spellborn might be headed that way. It hasn't been released yet but from what I saw of the beta, it wasn't going so well. I was in the "beta" for like 5 months and I still can't play it.

Rappelz or Silkroad? Both of them get kinda lame over time.
It was some semi-big MMO. It had a low level cap, and I think the same publishers published Advent Rising (the same reason I think the 1mil prize fell through for both of them).

I think Second Life should be on the list. Even though it has millions of people on it, just look at the graphics and animation...looks like total ass.

Silkroad/Rappelz

Edit: Forgot Ultima Online after EA got their grimy paws on it. :(

Horizons.

Star Wars Galaxies.

Planetside(I weep over this one. I wish it were great.)

The Matrix Online.

EverQuest 2(It's pretty good, it just didn't pick up subscribers)

Dungeons & Dragons Online.

Actually it really doesn't have all that many subscribers. G4 raised a good point about 2L that the average user logs onto 2L for 12 minutes a week. The only people really going crazy over 2L is the media really otherwise how many of us here have a 2L account?

Edit: If you want to throw in socializing MMOs... Habbo Hotel. lol

My honest opinion...

Guild Wars... I just can't find any enjoyment in it. absolutely none.

All I'll say to that is "grrr", since I'm not gonna harp about how cool Guild Wars really is.

I thought the purpose of this thread is to indicate the MMO's that really freakin' bombed in terms of userbase and such, not just based on personal preference? Maybe I misread the context.

I think it might be premature to say that LOTR:O is outta the picture, since they're really only about 1/8th into the whole story. I think it was about three or four months post-release until Guild Wars really took off, too.

Truth be told, I want to give LOTRO a shot, if only for my humongous fandom.

I guess it might be a bit early to count it out, but at this rate, it is going no where fast.

Which is sad; most of the folks I know who play it (real-life friends) say it's really a decent game. I think the reason it'll be doomed to fail is because they don't handle everything the same as other games (i.e. Healing classes, tank classes, et al).
