I'm pretty sure it isn't a rumor anymore, I believe that is now fact.

Also a Trek one in the works and rumours of a Firefly one too.

Can't think of any fails that haven't been listed, but I'd be all over a Trek MMO like Oprah on a baked ham just to sit in the captain's chair and spout Picard lines all day, I'd even make a Picard-looking character for this purpose.

What about City of Heroes and City of Villans?

I think they didn't go far.

PSU had great potential but terrible execution/racial balance as well as lack of unique monsters/missions. I remember returning after a few months to check out the new missions but what did I find? New bosses. And by new bosses I mean Two-Headed De Ragan, Earth De Ragan, Lightning De Ragan. I mean come on...

Second Life was also quite an abhorrent failure, basically an online game where you can make your own character and scripts but it's crap you hafto do 100% on your own and scripts are incredibly limited. The big "plus" is that you can show off your own model designs but if they're even half-good then there's the chance people will simply steal them anyhow, so...

Silkroad/Rappelz

Edit: Forgot Ultima Online after EA got their grimy paws on it. :(

actually EA has always owned Origin was just another holding and UO is still out and has players it may not be that great anymore but its still running I wouldnt call the longest running MMO in history a failure. (guniess book of records sited UO as the longest running and also the first true graphical MMO)

although UO started to suck after Richard Garfield left

add the matrix online to the list of failed MMOs hehe

I predict a future terrible MMO:

Hogwarts Online.

I shudder to think of it, but I can practically guarantee that it'll happen someday because there's a fanbase + existing game development.

Shadowbane

While I did enjoy it at first, since I was playing it along with a good friend and even continued playing it after he stopped. (Though that was mainly due to the fact that It was my first MMO ever.) One good thing I will say about it though was, my god the lore in that game was fantastic, the manual even had ..basically stories in it that explained elements of the world. But after a while of doing kill or be killed warfare, it got kinda boring and without my friend to play with slowly lost its fun factor. However, the lore, was and probably always will be a good read.

City of Heroes/Villians

I never did stick around for 'Villians' release, but I did have roomates at the time that did get it. I played Heroes for a while and for a long time I had fun with the game. This again was mostly attributed to playing it together with my friends/roomates. This game has so many things about it that were perfect: Capes (done right), perfect rag doll physics (for a mmo), hand's down the best character creation in a mmo or any video game ever period. The only downfall for me was that.. the game after a while of doing the same things over and over again, not to mention my friends moved on to WoW, just seemed to lose that fun factor. I had more fun just flying around freely than actually going and doing missions in order to increase my powers/level up. Leveling just became too much of a chore and it just wasnt as fun without my rl friends too.

Swords of the New World.
Died for me when I realized that, in fact, it was a retail game and not just another crappy korean MMO that could get by with a cash shop or something.
Because it sure as hell didn't play like a good game worth spending money on.

Granado Espada (Sword of the New World) really got my attention when Beta was released. It was a good concept (in my opinion), beautiful graphics, interesting playstyle (with all the stances and abilities), easy money making, pretty good music. A friend of mine dragged me into it, so we started playing, and it was really fun. I even stopped playing FFXI for almost one month just for this game lol. Anyways, it had cons: Bugs (what game doesn't), A LOT of vizsellers...I always got annoyed by those shouts of people selling Viz in the game, advertising their website -.-. Also, the reward from the missions weren't that motivating. One thing I didn't like was that most of the missions (if not all) didn't have relation with the story, that made it feel kind of "empty". I almost forgot... THE LAG. This was the most annoying thing lol, you'd have botters/vizsellers all around combat zones, they wouldn't let you exp there because they'd take all of your mobs, and of course, they'd make you lag like hell. It got to a point that it was almost impossible to play><.

The game died for me when my server got empty due to it becoming comercial, people didn't want to pay for it 'cause it still had all those cons I mentioned before, so it was not worth it. =\ They gave us 3 free months to play before starting paying for it, but it was not the same. Friends I made there quit because of what I said before. The server looked like a Ghost Town. Idk if it's still alive or what... I wanted to try the American Server but idk if there are enough players there, and if they fixed all the problems it had.. =\

Another MMO that I think fails:

Legend of Mir.

Basically its a Korean MMO that was advertised on the fail Sky channel Game Network which closed ages ago.

Basically the higher your level, the more you pay. Its basically an expensive clone of Ultima Online imo.
