I watched the review at GameTrailers for Monster Hunter Freedom 2, and I'm intrigued by this title. It looks seriously hardcore and looks like it has some of the things I love about dungeon crawlers -- killing monsters and getting badass armor and weapons -- but I can't tell if I'd find it addictive or mind-numbingly tedious.

Anyone here have experience with this game?

It's a very niche game here in America, but very popular in Japan. The cool thing about it is that you literally craft 90% of the items you use, by skinning monsters you defeat to use their hides in new armor; or crawling around in bushes looking for herbs to make potions.

I would say it's very addictive, but tedious at the same time. In the single offline player game, if you've never played a MH game before the bosses can be very difficult, so you'll have to prepare by farming for random herbs and webs or whatever you need to be ready enough with items to fight it. The worst part is that you'll probably end up losing a lot if you're still kind of new.

Nevertheless, if you stick with it and learn to play for a bit, it's totally awesome. The scenic graphics are very breathtaking, and you'll pretty much feel like you're a hunter from the stone age with all of the missions and stuff there is to do. There's also a third party program that lets you play online, which is where the fun is really at. :)

I have MH and MHF1 and they are both really fun. Like Aliciana said, you have to craft pretty much anything worth using. It's fun, although it can be very time-consuming to get all the items you need to upgrade weapon/make a piece of armor. One other downside is that you often reach a point with a weapon that an upgrade will increase the damage, bu the sharpness drops to crap, so the weapon is almost useless until you can upgrade it again.

Outside that, the game play itself is very fun. There are a lot of big, scenic environments to hunt through and it gives the game a very cinematic feel, especially with a 30 foot wyvern swooping down on you. If you're playing alone the game can get hard, as in freaking-cheap hard, but I'd imagine if you have people there to keep you from being ganged up on it's less of a problem.

I recommend the game, especially if you can play it with other people.

What stopped them from bringing MH2 overseas and yet bring MHF2 here?
Pisses me off cause the controls for MHF were balls.

I should get these games.. they looked fun :P even the PSP (though I hear the PSP one had horrible loading and small areas... I hope I have the right game I think).

From what I've read, the PSP version of MHF2 did away with the load time agony of the original by pre-loading areas as you're walking toward them.

MHF2 over in America is a bit dead to the society. Only few people hear about it and some actually buy it. I reccomend buying this game for the PSP because
1) It offers so much in the little UMD like crafting (This alone will be a long and hard process), running around with different types of weapons to use and armors. Hard monsters
2) If you get your friends into playing it, its even better.
3) Theres so much gameplay hours into it you'll be staying up all night trying to finish some quest.

I probably left out some for those who want the game so they can buy it and figure out things themselves.

I Picked this up today when I got a PSP, I found it fun. I can't wait to get into more of it.

I have this game, it's a lil meh at times. I like it only when my friends come over to help me out. (they are way into that game more then i am)

If this game has infrastructure online play I'd hop all over it. I got so tired of MHF because I didn't have anyone to help me out with the boss fights.

It doesn't have infastructure online play, but offers extra downloadable content.

It looks like its going to be tedious, and at times it is (some of the bigger Monsters, namely wyverns can take a while to kill), but playing it with some friends is awesome.

Also, isn't there something you can get, that you can fool your PSP thinking its playing in Ad-hoc mode, but you can set it up and be able to play over the internet? If not, I might look into that, I don't see it being too difficult!

(Using a wireless card, connecting your PSP via that, and then write some software to act as a server and let other PSPs connect (making them think they are close together))

Infact, that sounds like an awesome idea that I should do for an FYP!

Also:

Yea, the loading times in MHF2 are alot better than they used to be.

Using the third party tool to "trick" your game into playing over the internet is actually simple, I don't think I'm allowed to post info about it over qcdn though. Check the IGN forums.

it wasn't in stock at my local game stop T.T I want it.. bah

I broke down and bought the game today, since our paychecks also had a gift card enclosed. If I don't like it, at least I didn't have to spend much of my own money to play it.
