More E-Peen Dots?

I would like to point out that Nox (what happened to him anyway? He get buthurt and leave cause no one liked him?) said after teh rep bar gets full, you start getting gold stars under that.

http://www.qcdn.org/ffxi/showpost.php?p=626946&postcount=91

Soooo.. where are these gold stars he was talkin about?

I think the XD was a primitive form of the /sarcasm qcdn emote, but thats just how i see it.

And on the flip side, I know green grows, but does the red dots? And has anyone actually gotten more than 1 red dot (besides Mr. McFly)?

I almost want to make a sockpuppet with admins permission and get rated down just to test it.

Anyone who is enough of a jackass to get multiple red dots is either loved by all and rated up, or banned before post #50.

The system is rather petty. In regards to that, I don't care if the ring leaders get more or less pixels to represent themselves with.

What there should be, is a system implemented where each user must write an essay of social critique. From this essay, a council would derive a hierarchy of insight on the user, gauging intelligence on various levels and the capacity for self actualization. Each subsequent post from the user would then be held against what is deemed that person's epitome of acumen, and rated accordingly.

Until that happens, ..whatev'.
Seriously? You're expecting shit like that on a video game forum?

I dont think any forum in the WWW has a mod base intelligent enough and having enough time to work that system out... I think it was a "I hope this happens but never will thing". Theres always ways that work, but like his idea, yeah... right... not happening.

And I still want to see more than one red dot.

So why are we still doing this "people with shitty reps get to hide behind a black dot" thing? If we're going to do that, just put that stupid "Thank you" thing back that we had awhile ago that people realized was pointless. It's the same thing really.

Don't go halfway, just turn the damn thing on or off entirely. :/

I think you're giving him entirely too much credit.

There definitely should be more than one red dot.

He's giving me too much credit, yeah - because the nature and wording of my idea definently allude to ignorance.

I'd love to be on the council that proofs your essay.

Actually, it really does. Your post showed complete ignorance of the entire purpose of this forum. This is a forum for a video game, we have sub forums for other topics, but the primary purpose of this forum is final fantasy XI. You wanted people to write and essay giving a social critique, and use that as the basis for reputation on this forum. It's ludicrous, do you expect to get graded on your math homework by how much you drive your car or what you eat during the day? That's about as relevant as your basis for reputation.

My critique would have been "people are fucking idiots, starting with the guy who proposed this idea in the first place." Your "idea" has absolutely no merit for this setting, the current reputation system is far superior because people are getting rated up for things that are relevant to the purpose of the boards.

Edit: A perfect example would be peregrine. He's a medical student in real life, obviously he had to be smart(or at least has a good memory, but let's go with smart); but in the game and on the forums, he's a completely pompous(totally underserved too) dumbass. He was actually trying to do what you're proposing we do; completely ignore how stupid he was just because of his real-life job. It's a horrible idea, people are judged based on how they act here, no one gives a shit if they are the smartest person in the world outside of the game; because outside of the game has absolutely no relevance at all. Peregrine was too stupid to understand it, and if you really think that what your proposing would offer any worth at all, so are you.

I'd prefer the thanks button back

until then I'll sport my black dot because I actually like it

I had the black dot for 30 seconds, then I realized that 7 green dots is better looking.

And I highly doubt Ryuhei has the intelligence to grade these 'essays' properly, along without being subjective to certain subjects or peoples.

Once you go black, you never go back.

Given the opportunity to read your elaboration, I am assured that your comprehension is off base. You make me feel as though I should have implemented a Nietzsche esque introduction to my trivial post. Allow me break what I said down for you.

Ryuhei said:

The syntax of the first statement clearly demonstrates my attitude towards the existing system. We can say this sets the tone of my post - That tone being one of disdain and disinterest towards the matter at hand. Given this, one of Lilliputian insight would refrain from taking what I continue to say as literally as you do.

The diction I chose, in regards to the callous statement of the 'ring leaders' and their desire for pixel representation, further states that those of high social esteem here deserve absolutely no pre-merited respect. The reason, if not obvious, I satirically elaborate:

What there should be, is a system implemented where each user must write an essay of social critique. From this essay, a council would derive a hierarchy of insight on the user, gauging intelligence on various levels and the capacity for self actualization. Each subsequent post from the user would then be held against what is deemed that person's epitome of acumen, and rated accordingly.

I hate to reiterate, but it astounds me how anyone could take this seriously. It even appears you swayed poor Exodusamphi, who initially grasped at least the tone of my post. Might this be due to the sanctimonious aura stemming from the green beneath your online screen name?

Before I explain the nature and significance of what I proposed, I’ll tell you why I said it to begin with. For this, please continue to assume what I said was literal and austere. You tell me that intelligence and insight have no relevance to this forum. You even try to purport evidence against an intelligence based rating system in the form of someone we obviously acknowledge as an idiot. No amount of reiteration, the skills for which I’m not convinced you possess, can make this a valid point.

Anybody can become a doctor. To be book smart and insightful are two opposite sides of the mental spectrum. I want you to take a look at the Flameboard before we continue. How many of the issues presented there require extensive knowledge of the game? Do they more so than common sense, or the ability to perceive logical progression and responsibility? As you consider this, please, don’t kid yourself. The only board wherein such information would be predominantly pertinent is FFXI Discussion, or the minority of locations of that nature. The scope of who is subject to the existing rating system is far larger than that.

How many people do you think have gotten rate ups because of the sheep like behavior of their ingame friends, the likes of which grow exponentially due to this forum? Or because they are consistently hostile and willing to duplicitously paint a pious image of their own knowledge, or 'hard-edge' attitude? How many less experienced players, or less intelligent individuals do you think have cursoriously given 'props' in hopes of recieving the mutual, shallow respect that they give those they rate up? Do you think that any of these traits, which if you look closely can define the vast majority of posts from those of this site's highest esteem, really deserve respect?

Now let's take a step back and look at the implication of my satire. What many here lack is exactly what my metaphorical rating system would gauge for: insight and common sense. The existing system rewards these absent abilities to absolutely no extent. As a result, it is trivial, and hardly justifies the time I've wasted debating it with you.

In spite of this, please, don't misread me. I sincerely respect some of the people on this forum. One that comes to mind, is Audino. Personally, I think he's a great guy, is rather smart, and is a good leader. At the same time, I acknowledge that no one can know for sure that his green dots merit the pious esteem that a full green bar should represent. A good number of his rate-ups, though surely not all, probably came from the 'NSFW QCDN Rap' he contributed in, or any number of humorous responses.

If a full rate up bar can't possibly portray anything pure or valuable, I don't see why it exists. It is subject to too much bias. In any case, as many have said, the ability to turn it off renders it asanine. Maybe we should just be able to rate down, and identify the most inane among us? Or maybe those who would suffer this exorcism should just be banned immedietly and all together?

Ultimately, I guess I apologize for my verbosity, but you left me no choice. You don't have to respond, and I don't plan to continue, at least tonight. Half way through writing this, my room mate presented me with a considerable amount of alcohol, and I became very drunk. I could have worded this better, were I not subject to my circumstances. Anyway, I suppose this is it. I was never one for conclusions, but ultimately let my stance on the system stand. I don't have anything else to say about it.

I'm in love with the sound of my voice and I abuse my thesaurus like a mad man.
God you're a windbag, especially when it comes to repeating obvious stuff that's already been mentioned in the thread before by about a dozen people; all the while seeming to pass it off as your own original criticism of the system. Rather than just say you don't like the system because people can get rated up for things other than posts full of insights into the game, you write a damn novella and throw in as many higher level words as you can to make yourself sound smart like a pompous ass. No shit the reputation system isn't perfect, no one has said anything even remotely to the contrary; but it still has some value in determining who some of the best/worst members are.

The people with massive rep bars have all made big contributions to the forums, no one goes out rating up completely random people for absolutely no reason whatsoever. Plus, with all of the rules about how often you can rate up/down, you can't just spam it to bring up a lot of people's reputation quickly, so it'd require a lot of dedication and a very long time. Plus, unless your own reputation is pretty high, you're not going to add that much reputation so it would take even longer.

There are more ways to contribute to the forums than to just post facts all the time. Those who make the forums more entertaining do deserve their rate-ups, if only because they lighten up someone's day. You're also completely ignoring those with red bars, while a green bar might not be as meaningful because of the various reasons to rate someone up, a red bar is still a great indicator that the poster is a dumbass.

For some reason you really seem to think that we have a lot of members who joined who have nothing whatsoever to do with FFXI; I have no idea how you can be so deluded, but apparently you are. This is a forum for a video game, we have other sub-forms so people can talk about other things if they want to; but the sole purpose of this forum is a video game.

Your idea is still idiotic though, you want to base people on something that has absolutely no relevance to their entire reason for joining these boards. You're also proposing something that would be significantly more useless than what we currently have. There isn't going to be any more true insight almost any part of this game aside from the brand new content. No one would get rate ups, so the entire system would be meaningless because everyone would have the same reputation. So at best your system would be even less effective than what we already have now; but I'm sure someone as "smart" as yourself already figured that out.

That was pretty hostile. A thesaurus? You're talking to an English major and journalist by profession. I'm payed for, and talk like this. You don't seem to understand subtlety.

Having addressed the main point in your post already, lol, I don't know what else I'm supposed to say. If I rephrased something in this thread, I'm sure I said it more tactfully. I'll be honest, I didn't read everything here. From what I gathered, though, most additions simply agreed with you. Those that didn't were gang raped, or were introduced bashfully.

Also, you know, you're right. Some people are funny. Adopting the idea that this is a game forum, as you continually stress, though, how is that pertinent? Aside from that, who's to say everyone has the same humor? Realizing that true, do they deserve a universal rate up?

I also acknowledged that the only value of what we have is the ability to rate down. I guess you didn't read it all.

If you think there is no more insight possible on in-game events, how do you purport in-game knowledge, which would be unratable by my metaphorical system, to be of any value? It is rarely, if ever. The reason being what I stated in my initial post. I can only say something so many times for you.

You just don't get it, man. I never meant that my 'system' actually be implemented. The idea was poking fun at how asanine ours is to begin with. Albiet some rate ups may have been legitametly earned, new players or board members shouldn't be shown the level of respect a person deserves from a system predominantly rewarding popularity. In regards to automatic esteem, I'm just not a half way sort of guy, you see.

Our system isn't perfect. It can never be. I, and many others (not just those in the red), think it's silly, and nothing more than a popularity race. As a result, I don't think it should exist.

Only one(two as of yesterday) person(people) on my friend list in FF has ever rated me up. Just because it's not perfect doesn't mean it is completely useless.

There's a fine line between sounding intelligent, and sounding like an elitist (in a social sense). Apparently you don't know it, The quality of your thoughts and ideas are on par with many posters who have already brought up criticisms on the rating system without the need for thick language (I myself find it kinda useless, though red bars seems to be accurate most of the time, a single green is as a good as the top ranking poster in my opinion). As our doctor friend peregrine proved, sounding smart, or actually being smart has no bearings towards a community that favors "fun" and "practicality" to "intelligent" and "insightful", as the rating bars themselves prove.

Our system isn't perfect. It can never be. I, and many others (not just those in the red), think it's silly, and nothing more than a popularity race. As a result, I don't think it should exist.
Ah, but you seem to be in the minority, humans love vanity, weather it's your post count, or the green bars, or the rarity of your ingame gear, or the cost of your clothes, or the speed of your car, or the mastery of your language, people love to show off. The fact that it's merely a popularity contest is no reason to remove the system. I think some people with huge green bars aren't really that smart or insightful, hell I think there's a direct correlation to post frequency and green squares, when I post maybe 1 in 3 posts get a rate up, if it was funny, well now, I get huge amounts of rate ups. So if I posted more, and more of those posts were funny, I bet I could have a huge bar in no-time. Meanwhile insightful and helpful posts of mine tend to get less than half the rate ups of something funny. Basically if I post funny pictures probably involving a cat, I can "cheat" the reputation system.

No one here is acting like it's accurate or a worthy system. And I'll agree with you it's silly, but then, I've found the best things in life tend to be quite silly when you think about it objectively, I love manaburns, only because I extremely rarely find someone who can nuke for more damage than me, in the end it's quite silly, I could just take out my whm and make more than double the exp/hr. And I can't lie, I'll check my reputation from time to time to see if there have been any recent rate ups.

I acknowledge vanity as a human desire. I even admit that it is one of the reasons I initially wanted to read and be able to express myself more fluently. The difference between that and a rating system, though, is that the influence of my vanity isn’t pushed upon others.

Still, this is a more valid argument than, "The people with high reputation bars deserve it," "Though many rate ups are probably unwarranted, some aren't, so that makes it worth it," "There is nothing left to add insight on, so we might as well have this," or really any others I've heard for the existence of the system.

Maybe I'm just some sort of naive purist, but I believe in my stance, and upon rereading this thread, I can safely say that I defended it at least as well as anybody attacked it. Only 3 people openly said anything against the system. Those three were surrounded so quickly that their wording and influence weren't sufficient (I suppose, though, that one might not count, as nobody really ever knows what he's saying.)

The only point really made, was that the system isn't a gauge of how informative or entertaining a person's posts are as a whole, but one of their popularity. I said a lot more than that, and I elaborated on how it’s true. I didn't mean to be grandiloquent.

Maybe others feel that what I stated has already been said, because it was all just naturally assumed to be true. If that's the case, well, what does that say about how people really feel?

I'm sorry, I won't defend this any further. Maybe some will change their pre-dispositions on certain people in this forum. I assume more, though, will laugh and tell me to go read the dictionary some more. I honestly don't care. I'll even help some people along and hand out rate ups myself.

Alas, things don't need to be useful to exist - some things exist for fun. If you're not enjoying the feature as much as others, then as mentioned: don't use it. I'm sure the ability to disable exists in your profile.

It figures that the only people who don't want the rep system are those who either hardly have any, or are red. Hellstorm is probably tired of people rating down his idiocy. It just comes off more as jealousy than any real problem with the system when the only people who "hate" it are those who don't have much/any rep at all. Basically their tone says that they're not one of the "cool" kids with a big rep bar, so they want the whole system gone.

Yeah, it's not completely indicative of your worthiness to the boards, but that doesn't mean that it wouldn't have some relevance to your worthiness either. You might not be the person with all of the answers who can solve any problem, even if you're just the forum clown who makes everyone laugh, that's still providing worth to the boards and you deserve some e-peen.

9/15 of my latest rep changes are because people agreed with what I said(or were thanking me for helping them with their problem/question); 4 are laughing at my jokes, or thanking me for posting a picture; one is just someone making a comment and didn't want to make it a rate-down;the last one is Tenia "rating me down" because her opinion of me has dropped(oh no). Hell, 2 of them are thanking me for owning Hellstorm as bad as I did in some of my posts; as I often do. Based on that limited sample, more than enough people use it for legitimate reasons than "just to rate up a friend."

You missed these the first time around.

Obviously, if 9/15 of one person's rate ups are supposedly legitimate, the majority of everyone's must be. Almost every thread that ever derails turns into a rate up+1.

Anyway, let them have their dots. I don't care. At least, maybe, I was able to change one person's perspective.

Now, stop making me respond. :P
