You're talking to an English major and journalist by profession. I'm payed for, and talk like this.

I hate to do this, mostly because I love your diction and I got the gist of your sarcasm from the get-go. Your rebuttals are well-thought, and I enjoy reading them.

However, if you're going to use your education as a rebuttal of any sort, at least use the correct form of the verb. You're not a rope, so you aren't payed :) You're paid for. /grammarrantoff

I've done this before, actually.

Either way Baja, you missed his initial point entirely, and are quite too proud to admit to it. It's okay though, I don't believe you're in any real danger of having to submit an essay to the QCDN Board of Grammar Nazism anytime soon. Rest easy, good sir.

That was pretty hostile. A thesaurus? You're talking to an English major and journalist by profession. I'm payed for, and talk like this. You don't seem to understand subtlety.
Seriously? Wow, I was just doing a little "satire" based on how your posts sounded, but damn I didn't think I'd hit the bullseye. There's no subtlety in your posts, you're just long winded.

Also, you know, you're right. Some people are funny. Adopting the idea that this is a game forum, as you continually stress, though, how is that pertinent? Aside from that, who's to say everyone has the same humor? Realizing that true, do they deserve a universal rate up?
So now I have to justify why people who make the boards more entertaining through jokes is a good thing?

If you think there is no more insight possible on in-game events, how do you purport in-game knowledge, which would be unratable by my metaphorical system, to be of any value? It is rarely, if ever. The reason being what I stated in my initial post. I can only say something so many times for you.
There's nothing left to discover about almost the entire game, aside form the content which just came out with wings of the goddess, the pop conditions of some of the salvage NM's, and the trick to beating AV. Everything else has been figured down to a science; the vast majority of the posts dealing with in-game knowledge wouldn't need to be written if the questioner would do a little research. Your system is the only one that is looking for people to actually post very in-depth knowledge, when there's really no reason for it. Most people go to wikipedia, somepage, BG, KI, or lolalla for that kind of information; here is about discussion, but there's not going to be any new insights when almost everything is already known at this point.

You just don't get it, man. I never meant that my 'system' actually be implemented. The idea was poking fun at how asanine ours is to begin with. Albiet rate ups may have been legitametly earned, new players or board members shouldn't be shown the level of respect a person deserves from a system predominantly rewarding popularity. In regards to automatic esteem, I'm just not a half way sort of guy, you see.

Our system isn't perfect. It can never be. I, and many others (not just those in the red), think it's silly, and nothing more than a popularity race. As a result, I don't think it should exist.
Except that the system isn't predominantly rewarding popularity race at all. Of the 15 current reputation changes on my list, 13 are from people I don't remember really having talked to in any serious way. A few are, at best, random people who I made a small post to answer a question or something. A few others are people I haven't talked to for a very long time; and a few more are people who I actively dislike and the feeling is mutual. Only two of them could really be classified as "current" friends, meaning that I've actually talked to them within the last few months outside of some arbitrary forum discussion.

I don't see how that's a point.
You don't see how the pattern that everyone who thinks the reputation system is worthless is someone with little to no reputation themselves is a valid observation? No wonder you're an English major, your sense of logic sucks.

Based on that limited sample, more than enough people use it for legitimate reasons than "just to rate up a friend."
Obviously, if 9/15 of one person's rate ups are supposedly legitimate, the majority of everyone's must be. Almost every thread that ever derails turns into a rate up+1.
More failure in logic. First off, you're blatant assuming that most of people's rate-ups are solely because of popularity and not because of any worthwhile contribution; all without a shred of proof too. Second, when someone(me in this case, but anyone could, really) proves that it's not just a popularity contest; you ignore how your belief is proven wrong and imply that those rate-ups are not the standard.

You've yet to provide one iota of proof that rate-ups are entirely, or at least predominantly based solely on popularity. No one's denying that some rate-ups are based on popularity; but a large portion of them are because someone liked your post, not just because they liked you. You're just assuming that because you said it, it must be true.

You went around and rated people up randomly, just to try to prove your point, but it doesn't work when you do it for the sole reason of proving your point. The only person who seems to be using the system for no worthwhile purpose so far is you.

I think it was 3 in the morning. Cut me some slack.

Get it? Ahah. Hah. Yeah.

I got his initial point, he doesn't like the current rep system; that was never in question. It doesn't change my rebuttal that his theoretical system is idiotic and that his critiques on the current system are largely unfounded.

I'm not going to break down my posts again, explaining every point, what's to be taken seriously, and what's merely a quip.

Stop putting things in your own context. Everything you say, I've addressed, and you're not worth any more time. Several are on the same level as I and get the point of what I've been trying to say. Maybe you should give it a break, and let it soak in.

I'm being condescending because you keep acting like you've actually proved something when all you've done is repeat what other people have said, just using unnecessarily complex language as a smokescreen for a complete lack of support for those claims. Even now, when you haven't done anything to actually refute my points; you're acting like your logic is beyond question. Saying "I've already covered that" and then dropping my point is not addressing it; it's ignoring it.

But, go ahead and just run away while acting like you've actually proved something. "I'm not posting anymore because I'm so right I don't have to prove it," never works, but whatever.

If there’s no subtlety in my posts to mislead you, Bajaratt, then all you’re saying is that you can’t read.

So now I have to justify why people who make the boards more entertaining through jokes is a good thing?

No, that’s called a quip. It’s a trivial, supporting detail to question your logic – it goes hand in hand with the plethora of other things that I’ve said.

There's nothing left to discover about almost the entire game, aside form the content which just came out with wings of the goddess, the pop conditions of some of the salvage NM's, and the trick to beating AV. Your system is the only one that is looking for people to actually post very in-depth knowledge, when there's really no reason for it.

Here's a point that evidently went above you. In regards to Raizondetre on the Flameboard, does it take extensive knowledge about FFXI to get that this person is just an irritable ball of nerves? No. How many threads actually do require such experience? You agree that there’s nothing left to divulge about the game, and yet you can’t embrace insight (in terms of comprehension, not endgame or gear bullshit, which I’ve stated time and again, straight and sarcastically) as what gives a person potential here.

You don't see how the pattern that everyone who thinks the reputation system is worthless is someone with little to no reputation themselves is a valid observation?

No, Bajaratt, I don’t. What I see is your ignorance towards other people’s opinions.

No wonder you're an English major, your sense of logic sucks.

Jesus, man, what the fuck does that mean? That’s sig worthy.

More failure in logic. First off, you're blatant assuming that most of people's rate-ups are solely because of popularity and not because of any worthwhile contribution; all without a shred of proof too.

I’ve said that rate-ups are too subject to bias to make the system valuable, not that all are flat out from friends. This alludes to those influenced by the groundless, arrogant attitude you and others like you portray, those influenced by the supposed knowledge you must naturally possess being an established forum goer, and those of mutual popularity who rate up after a good derailed thread's worth of circle jerking, as well. Don’t word things for me.

Second, when someone(me in this case, but anyone could, really) proves that it's not just a popularity contest; you ignore how your belief is proven wrong and imply that those rate-ups are not the standard.

That’s hilarious, considering you just rated me down because I ‘couldn't win, so claimed I did and stopped posting,’ which as it appears in that clincher, is exactly what you intended to do. (Edit: And which is what you actually did do in your subsequent post, which I just saw.) Anyway, you aren’t saying anything new.

Stop trying to ram your empty words down my throat. I can’t provide you with a percentage of how many rate-ups aren’t legitimate forum wide – Just as you can’t provide the opposite. You’re kidding yourself if you think that the majority of everybody’s posts are serious, though. With that in mind, how can all of the rate-ups thrown around be for valuable posts? Just look. There’s very little meaningful content anywhere.

Actually, this conversation alone proves to me you don’t deserve all of your eleven green dots. If it proved the same to a few others, then I’m happy. Because, you see, your arrogant, spearhead attitude is all that made me go past my first post. You care far more about making yourself look impenetrable than I do about this topic. I suppose the worst thing about the system, in my eyes, is that it serves as a perfect cesspool for spawning people with your mentality. Get over yourself.

You went around and rated people up randomly, just to try to prove your point, but it doesn't work when you do it for the sole reason of proving your point. The only person who seems to be using the system for no worthwhile purpose so far is you.

I actually only rated you, Neisan, and Daveman up... And you were the only one I did so to sarcastically. ;)

You know, way back in the day, before time was time, there was something called fun. Stories were passed through the ages of people who used to have it, and generations marveled that their ancestors once had a good time. This was before the dark times when uptight, pretentious, overbearing control freaks clamped down on the idea of what should be fun and what should not. "It isn't fun and is totally nonsensical to me. I declare that it has no worth whatsoever." But the funseekers fought. And though they couldn't expel the pricks from their kingdom, they rose up in a collective "Screw you," and rated each other up for many years into the future.

The moral of the story: If you don't like the rep system, don't use it. Let the people who find it amusing or who utilize it as a way to get and give real feedback to others use it in whatever manner they choose. It's not your call whether QCDN has a rep system or uses it or not. So turn it off if you want, quit your incessant bitching, and take your overly uppity, holier than thou prose elsewhere. If you find all posts here so "meaningless," then you apparently don't read much or have a real warped sense of what has meaning. Don't like it, feel free to go and spare us the dissertation and your continued condescension.

Yes, I'm totally ignoring those who know a lot about the game and I definitely don't want to reward any of them. That's why I keep saying that most of the rate-ups are because of the useful content of people's posts. There's a huge difference between saying there's not much new to discover and saying there's no way to post helpful, relevant information. Most of the more knowledgeable people already have higher reputations; so obviously they're already being rewarded.

No, Bajaratt, I don’t. What I see is your ignorance towards other people’s opinions.
How far did you have to reach in your ass to pull this one out? There's nothing ignorant about noticing a common link between everyone who wanted the rep system gone. The fact that you can't see it or don't think it's a valid observation, that's another matter entirely.

ryuhei said:

It's a very simple comment, but I'm not surprised it whooshed you. Most people are better with either words or numbers; English or math. Your logic is horrible, so you must suck at math, so you're likely much better at English, hence being an English major. You can't seem to take 1 and 1 and get 2; that those with bad reps and no reps are the main ones who want it gone.

ryuhei said:

Yeah, I was totally putting words in your mouth, you never said that the rep system is mainly about popularity. Oh wait:
The only point really made, was that the system isn't a gauge of how informative or entertaining a person's posts are as a whole, but one of their popularity.
a system predominantly rewarding popularity

Yes, because rating you down for the content of your post is totally hypocritical to what I've been saying people do.

It's amazing how you think you can read my mind as to what I'm about to say; unfortunately you're wrong or I'd ask for some lottery numbers.

ryuhei said:

So you limited your arbitrary rate-ups to 3, and unless the other two were equally as meaningless as the one you gave to me and based solely on their popularity, you're just proving yourself wrong.

Zyndara, yes, you've said that already, as well have I said I acknowledge that and it is beside the purpose of my posting.

Etc., Etc.

I don't think I can muster words any longer to elaborate this all to you. I'm positive there are many out there laughing under their breath. Say that I'm backing out, claiming I won, as I'm sure you will. We've been through this, and it appears you're digging yourself a hole.

Good day, Bajaratt.

Good day, Bajaratt.

You're right I said it again because you seemed to not get it the first time. So what is the purpose of your posting then? Because all I see reading through your long-winded pseudo-academic drivel is that you are really full of yourself and acting like you're somehow better than the rest of us all. You sit there and say you respect people on these forums then turn around and say virtually all the posts here are meaningless. You've stated time and again how we're not worth arguing with and the subject matter is hardly worthy of your attention. Yet here you are, still arguing a matter you supposedly acknowledge is already a done deal. Are you arguing just to see yourself type or what? If you want people to take what you have to say seriously or show the least bit of interest or objectivity, you'd be better served by not coming in here and insulting and acting like you're above them. I frankly don't care what you do, but you've got nerve talking about people digging themselves holes when all you've done is made yourself look totally condescending and egotistical.

I apologize for my verbosity, but you left me no choice.

I think the use of the word verbosity in a video game forum equals an immediate loss of the argument. Especially coming from an English major who insists on trying to sound intelligent but refuses to spell-check his posts. Also, following that usage with overly-dramatic statements like, "you left me no choice," is extra-cool. It kind of makes me feel like I'm back in a high school drama class. >.>

I may be wrong, but that's how it looks to me.

Anyway...gogo epeen?~

EDIT:
Basically if I post funny pictures probably involving a cat, I can "cheat" the reputation system.

<---Gives free rate-ups for cat pics!

From Baj: (Didn't know how to quote and carry over from the other thread)
No, black is the new red. Considering that almost all of the red bars changed to black; it's a pretty safe assumption that anyone with a black bar had a red one. Those are the only ones who would have anything to gain by hiding their reputation; there's no other real reason to hide your rep from everyone else.

I know we've been down this road before, but I still don't think the black dot has to mean red. What about the people like me who don't care about the reputation system at all and doesn't want to use it? I really don't care about any of these things on Qcdn. I don't care about flames, e-peen, post counts, signatures, activity rate, or that stuff. And I don't want anyone to associate me not caring with whinning, its just that I don't look at that stuff. Sometimes I think its stupid that people rate up on boob pictures or one liners. I know this is having fun and if that's fun for you guys that's fine, its just that I don't care for it. So the way I see it the 3rd party kind of gets screwed over. The first party being the everyday people with good to great reputations with lots of green dots, the second party being the people who put themselves in the positions of having the red dots, and then the third party, people like me, who don't want to be part of it wanting the black dot but can't have it, because they will be assumed to me part of the second party.

I have 1 green dot, its cute. I don't want anything more or anything less. What I don't want is if I feel like turning my reputation off and it turns black and then I post and get some half-assed response because of it.

I know, if I don't care then why not keep it on. Because I shouldn't have to. Its a popularity contest / watch out for the asshole. I'm neither of those and i'm cool with that.

Edit: What we need is if someone wants to turn it off for what ever reason can, except for those with red dots.

I know, if I don't care then why not keep it on. Because I shouldn't have to. Its a popularity contest / watch out for the asshole. I'm neither of those and i'm cool with that.
And that means that you actually do care. "Because I might wanna" is not a valid reason, if you truly didn't care, you'd completely ignore your and other people's reputation, so you having a green dot instead of a black dot wouldn't mean a thing. You want to establish yourself as neither a red-dot or someone with a lot of rep, but hiding your reputation is the worst way to accomplish that. A single green dot means you're not an asshole/idiot nor are you someone with a high reputation; that's exactly what you're going for so that's exactly what you should use.

It's also not primarily a measure of popularity, while a lot of popular people have high reputations; that's primarily because they actually contribute to the boards. Daveman made the best observation, that people with higher post count tend to have higher reputations. It's because they're very active and contribute more to the boards, thereby having more opportunities to say something worth rating up. Of the top 10 posters(not counting Cmdrfly, who's fudged his rep bar), the only one who doesn't have at least 7 bars is elemmire, who doesn't really contribute that much aside from cuting/pasting previous posts. The rest of us(since I'm in there too) tend to post a lot and be helpful to the boards; some more than others, but all of us contribute a lot. So while yes, the popular people tend to have higher reputations; that doesn't mean their popularity is what causes their higher reputations.

We need to just disable the option to hide your reputation, period. There is no good reason for it, it's only for people to try to hide their bad reputations.

As for quoting over from the other thread, you could just copy/paste my quote into this one, just do <quote=bajaratt]message[/quote>, but with the correct brackets.

Can we just hurry up and get those stars Nox promised?

I have a related question. If you disable your rep does it erase all the rep you've gotten? Like, if someone has 8 green dots and they switch it to a black one, if they were to re-enable(is that a word?) their rep would they get their 8 dots back?

It doesn't delete them. Under where you control the reputation, it will show your accumulated points, regardless of the system being deactivated.

Yes, it just hides your reputation, it doesn't remove it.
