Movie Review Thread

We just rented NAPOLEAN DYNAMITE last night. I honestly did not think I would like it at all....the commercials served it no justice - after seeingt he commercials, I was like "Um...a movie with an annoying lead character? Thanks, but NO" Then we kept hearing all these rave reviews and finally succumbed to the temptation...

Anyway, I loved it. :) The characters where unique and freaking funny. This past year has had a lot of small budget quirky movies that are outstanding (Napolean Dynamite, Garden State, Eternal Sunshine, etc.) I hope this is a movie trend that is here to stay. <3 It has been a LONG LONG time since I have seen so many good movies in a row....or maybe I am just getting better at picking and choosing...meh, either way - YAY!

PEDRO IS DA SHIT!

Casshern is a great film and I hope that it makes it through the localization process unscathed.

I think it was a little heavy handed in the "War is bad" message, but visually it was astounding.

Here's hoping that Dreamworks gives it a well distributed release so I can finally watch it where the sub titles are complete and well timed opposed to the fan release.

I got my mits on a fan sub a while back and it was awsome, but the timing on the subtitles is a bit weird and they didn't include the correct font so some minor alterations had to be done before viewing

Ok - I recently saw....

GAUDI AFTERNOON - I rented it because I like Lily Taylor and Juliette Lewis. However it was stupid, and poorly written. The acting was ok - but didn't make up for the assinine storyline. I think it was about a manly looking lesbian and a cross dressing gay man fighting over their child...and OH the hijinx. >< Did not work for me.

SHATTERED GLASS - Rented it because I like Hank Azaria, Steve Zahn (both had very small roles) Hayden Christensen (Darth Vader kid) and Peter Sarsgaard (the druggie best friend in GARDEN STATE)
The premise: The true story of a young journalist who fell from grace when it was found he had fabricated over half of his articles
*Really well acted....GREAT acting in fact...however it was long, drawn out, boring, uninteresting.

and.....went to the theatre and FINALLY saw SPANGLISH

And ABSOLUTELY ADORED it!!!!! Cannot wait for it to reach DVD so I can grab a copy. Adam Sandler - charming and real...can definitely hold his own in a more dramatic role, The Spanish Lead woman - a GODDESS, and also very charming, both the younger actresses who played the daughters were great, Cloris Leachman .... however, stole the movie for me. I was never a huge fan of hers (granted I mostly have only seen her in FACTS OF LIFE - which was a bad show) she was INCREDIBLY funny and GREAT at her role...perfect even....as the drunken mother.

The only downside for me was Téa Leoni - I have NEVER been a fan - I think she over-acts in everything she does (she was OK in THE FAMILY MAN but everything else, /puke) and this was no exception. Yes, I hate her for marrying my David DUchovney, but I disliked her acting style way before that. ;) Anyway - she is the character in the movie that everyone is supposed to hate - and yeah..it works...but only because she SUCKS (lol) not because she is doing a good job. She has this one scene where she is having an orgasm for what seems like an eternity...it is so overdone (obviously it was supposed to be funny - it wasn't...it was ANNOYING) that I started wondering why it is that I want to act in a world where SHE gets work. /sigh ANYWAYYY

The movie just offers so much. It is a drama, but has definite funny moments (such is life) all of the characters (besides horrid Tea) are very real and believable. It is a story about a dysfunctional marriage, dysfunctional family life, true love, mother/daughter relationships, father/daughter relationships, dealing with change, dealing with success, etc. Seriously it was a beautiful film. I believe it has something that everyone could relate to in it. I cannot really explain what it was about because there were so many different story's within the cast of characters that was happening throughout the film, I just say - I would recommend it wholeheartedly. <3

BUMP

Recently I rented: NATIONAL TREASURE - I normally wouldn't have rented this, the commercials didn't do much for me..but I was an extra, so I had to grab it and slow-mo the scenes that I was in - and yes, I have an ass shot <3 lol. Anyway - I was pleasantly surprised, it wasn't the GREATEST action ever, but the little tidbits of history that they spewed throughout the film, kept it interesting and entertaining for the most part. I would have been disappointed had I seen in in the theatre (since it is so freaking expensive to go out and see movies nowadays) but it was a good rent.

ALFIE - with Jude Law, Marisa Tomie <sp?> <---I love her BTW, and Susan Sarandon <--so hot for an older lady ^^ This movie was predictable and boring. You know what is going to happen at the end, about 10 minutes into the film. The acting was good, other than that - blah.

***COUPLING complete seasons 1 and 2 - This show is sort of a british version of FRIENDS (only it is actually funny) If you haven't had the pleasure - RENT SEASON 1 - you will be hooked. It is witty, naughty, smart, and has great acting. You will love it, I swear <3

oooh, comparing coupling to friends ... youd get some nasty comments over here if you said that to some people :P

youah, coupling rocks, but they got rid of Jeff for the 3rd series and it sucked without him :(

I said "it's like the British version of Friends...only funny" I compared it to FRIENDS, because it is a sitcom about 3 men and 3 women...who are friends...and for no other reason.

And you are right about Jeff - he was the best character on the show - I cannot imagine why they would get rid of him...

I saw Kingdom of Heaven recently. Awesome movie. There were a couple slow parts during the 2 1/2 hours of it, but the action/battle scenes were incredibly shot. I'm not a big Orlando Bloom fan, being that he usually plays a wuss in most of his movies (i.e. Troy, Pirates of C, BH Down) ... but in this he was pretty badass. Check this out if you are a fan of Ridley Scott, or if you are interested in things like the Crusades, or if you're interested in seeing a depiction of the fine line between religion and greed in the era that this movie took place in.

it was either a pay dispute, or he didnt want to be stereotyped inot that role, cant remember which

Hmmm. "The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy" just came out. And I thought it would be an awsome action/comedy. But at school everyone was talking about how gay it was..
Has anyone else seen it?

btw I thought i was gonna like Napolean Dynamite, but it sucked!!
Some of the random things were funny (Like the time he tried to pull off that jump on the bike lol), but the rest sucked. The ending was the worse, but he's a good dancer, just not for 20 min.
