MW2

Well, PC Gamers are about to rage. MW2 on PC does not support dedicated servers.

Yesterday Infinity Ward Creative Specialist Robert Bowling went on an information dropping streak about the upcoming PC version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Those looking to play the game on the PC can breathe a sigh of relief as he tweeted that the PC version of the game will indeed be landing on the exact same day as the 360 and PS3. He doesn't have the minimum specs yet, but he says the PC version will have Prestige Mode and plenty of Steam support, which is good news for those who prefer to shoot with a mouse.

Bowling also dropped some info on the PC version's servers, or lack thereof. On the Bash and Slash podcast he discussed the upcoming PC version and let slip that it would not have dedicated servers. Instead Infinity Ward will be using a propriety matchmaking network called IWnet that runs along side Steam to do all matchmaking so that it will "allow matchmaking for our PC users as well, just like you have on a console that’s built in on Xbox Live and PSN." This is obviously a lot different than dedicated servers as IWNet basically works like a console game's multiplayer and matches you up with players of the same rank. According to Bowling there will be "no dedicated server list," and you will rely on IWnet for "matchmaking and your games, but you still have your private matches." Kind of taking what is unique about multiplayer gaming on a PC and crushing it, huh?

Sorry to get you PC gamers all excited in the first paragraph and then come down on you in the second. What do you say? Boycott?

I might not be getting this on PC but that is some serious BS.

The game is not going to sell well on PC compared to the consoles so i dont think IW cares. Its not an excuse in my opinion... I just think thats the way devs are going with the PC. The hacking and bootlegging is out of control and it effects the sales alot.

I will be getting this for the 360 anyways for XBL and the community.

And of course, here is the obligatory rage petition.

30k sigs so far.

To: infinity ward

Get Infinity Ward to review their decision not to allow fully dedicated servers for their forthcoming game release CoD:MW2. Remember that this Call of Duty was made popular by PC Gamers who have supported the series throughout.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

A rather weak petition too.

this really hurts clans. they cant admin their servers, customize, etc. so, this probably will take away from custom maps as well. horrible decision.

what's so bad about not having dedicated servers?

Basically this. If other PC games has this feature, why can't MW2?

so 360 gets server improvements, and the PC loses what they already had. Thats ass backwards, and i dont even play games on PC.

Well, i owe 15 more bux on my prestige edition pre order and im set!

They're obviously focusing more on the Xbox, perhaps their numbers are higher now on the Xbox, so regardless of where CoD may have got their intial boost it's not paying off for them as much now??

ill tell from experience as to why its so bad now for pc users. i have MW on both ps3 and PC. since hacks are so much easier to get ahold of on pc, without the ability to admin a server, you have no ability to get rid of the trash.
also, there are clans that have events between each other. without dedicated servers, that no longer exists.
mods and custom maps are a source of input to IW that they can later input. cod2 had a map implemented that was custom made by a user. plus, custom maps are a good change of pace from the norm after playing the game for a while. mods are also a good feature by COD servers. typically things such as dmg modifiers and whatnot are changed to help with realism.
little things like this (which in my opinion to why i always like pc shooters more), are now going to be gone. leaving all platforms on the same bland field. for this reason, i am only buying for ps3 instead of buying for both ps3 and pc

They're just shootin' themselves in the foot tryin' to make some forward progress for PC matchmaking. Bad move in my book, really bad.

I don't know though if it will affect clans to the extent people think. I mean, look at the Xbox games that have this system yet still have clan support. All you have to do is make private matches to get your clan games on. The only two issues I could see this bringing on the PC would be if they didn't allow for weapon swapping on the maps and if they don't allow modding at all. Modding is somewhat of a holy grail to PC gaming, you just don't fuck with that. I guess there would be another issue if they didn't allow you to see you ping to a match as well, which will likely be the case. That would pretty much kill the PUG scene I'd imagine or make for a lot of quitters.

They must be tryin to show pc players where the real actions at, xbox onry!

your right. however, in the world of COD with clans, clans go to their dedicated server. sometimes, an admin or whoever will just go on the server and spectate/admin the server. there is no need to party up to get into a round. clans use dedicated servers to practice as a group. teaching tactics and whatnot. without dedicated servers, everything that clans currently do in cod is no longer there. that was what was great about the server that my old cod2 clan had. had our own server. hosted scrims, practiced stuff on specific maps, tourneys, etc
not only that, but clan scrims are out of the question too.

While I hate, hate that there are no dedicated servers, according to Fourzerotwo clans can still do those things.

From his blog:

I recently broke news on a PC community member’s podcast that Modern Warfare 2 would be introducing a completely new backend infastructure called IWNET that would allow matchmaking for multiplayer games on PC. The news, by default, means no more browsing through a Server List for a server with the settings / ping you want among other things, and sent shockwaves through the hardcore PC community, leading to many more questions than answers as to ‘HOW’ this would work, and if it would really be better for the PC community as a whole.

Questions, assumptions, and speculation I intend to dispel.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is actually the biggest investment Infinity Ward has ever made into the PC version of our games. It’s also the most feature-rich PC version we’ve ever made. IWNET takes the benefits of dedicated servers and allows them to be utilized and accessed by every player, out of the box, while removing the barrier to entry for players unaware of how to maintain a server on their own.

How does it do this?

Matchmaking & Smoother Gameplay: When you want to player a multiplayer game on PC, in the past. You’d have to scroll through a Server Browser which listed every available server which was hosted by individual server admins. Each had their own private rules, mods, or ways of playing the game. Most players would also use the server browser to find just the best quality game (based on PING). With IWNET matchmaking, it takes all that into account for you. All you have to do is select the playlist (pre-set gametypes with custom rules) that fits the style of play you are in the mood for. When you do, it will automatically find you a game with the best performance, ping, and preferences based on your location and individual connection as well as matching you with players of your same SKILL. So you’re always guaranteed the best game performance for where you are and what connection you’re playing on as well as an equal game with other players of your same skill level, not rank, but skill level. It doesn’t mean you’ll just be thrown into a random game! It will put you in the game that will give you the smoothest gameplay possible without you having to manually find a server with the best ping.

Playlists and Private Matches: As I described above, Playlists are pre-set game modes and gametypes for public games. If you just want to jump into a public game of Search and Destroy or Hardcore Search and Destroy and you don’t care about fully customizing it, then you can utilize playlists to do that quickly for you. However, say you’re in a clan and you want to play a Clan match with another team, or you want to practice for an upcoming tournament that has specific rules in a private game. Then you can start a Private Match (which is essentially like running your own private server) where you have complete control over the rules, who can join, boot players you don’t want, and essentially control the entire game or tweak it to your liking. Once the rules are set, you can invite the other team in or just start it up with your clan to practice with the custom rules before the match. This now allows you to play custom games out of the box without the need to install mods, find a modded server with the rules you like, or worry about not being in control of the match.

Party System and Friendslist: Modern Warfare 2 on PC also makes it much easier if you want to party up with your friends, or again, with your clan for a match. You can utilize the friendslist to see when your friends are online, and invite them to your Party. A Party allows you to move from game to game as a group. It’s great for clan matches, because you can party of with your clan and move from public game to public game together. Or if you’re doing a scrim, party up and invite the other clan (who is in a party) and they’ll all join at once. Set up a private match together and play. It makes setting up scrims or games with friends easier and hassle free.

Cheat / Hack Free Games: The biggest benefit of using IWnet by far is the fact that you don’t have to worry about joining a server full of aim-bots, wallhacks, or cheaters. Or relying on the server admin of the server to constantly be monitoring, banning, and policing it. Modern Warfare 2 on PC allows us to control the quality of the game much more than ever before as well as utilizing the VAC (Valve-Anti-Cheat) system to keep games clean of hackers and cheaters.

All in all, IWNET adds a load of new features that the PC version of our games have never had before and allows us an infrastructure to continue to update and improve on the game post-launch.

this still sounds like it kills the number one benefit of dedicated servers...gameplay mods/map modding. when i say gameplay mods, im specifically referring to realism mods that i used to play on cod2. they allowed the admins to alter many things (gun sounds, range, etc). and the biggie....map creation. cod2 had contests for users to make a map that they later implemented in game. but also, its nice to play maps that are custom made instead of playing the same ol thing. cod4 for pc has a recreation of the most popular map in any cod game-carentan that was made by a user. unfortunately, without dedicated servers, this probably wont be available anymore. which is unfortunate. however, im getting it for console anyhow since i like to browse the interwebs while im playing.

If the FFXIV beta is released the same time MW2 is released, what will everyone play?

You can only pick 1!

FFXIV by far for me.

I'm kind of up in the air about this, as to whether or not dedicated servers are needed for these things. If you think about it, Halo 3, no matter what you think of the game, allows for custom maps and mods to an extent. However, it doesn't allow for file changing so there would be no altering things such as sounds. Another biggie is that changes to gametypes would be minimal, I'd assume. For example, there is a mod for CoD4 called CoD Frontlines (something like that). It basically uses the CoD4 gameplay but the maps are huge (obviously custom as well) and created to play out like a Battlefield type game, or more like Frontlines: Fuel of War if you're familiar with that game.

There is also the thought that we do not know what's totally up here. Their new system could allow for the same type of mods but be under more watch than norm. I just don't see this matchmaking system helping sales enough of the PC version to even be worth creating a system like this if they totally killed the mod scene, or even dented it. It's only goin' to hurt them if you are right.
