Needs tips for lvl 50 nin

Hey guys, I'm bout to hit lvl 50 nin and could use some tips. From lvl 41-49 I've been spamming the elemental wheel to hold hate, and it was going great, until this merrited DRG (damn you DRQ), started spamming penta thrust. Anyway, since I don't know much about NIN I figured I'd ask you guys here for some tips. At 50 I have a static that consists of a brd, healer, myself and 3 melee DDs. I'm sure those douches are gonna do what they can to take hate and make me look bad (yeah I'm calling you guys douches, what of it lol). Well I wanna be able to pin the mob squarely on me so they can feel gimp all the way to 75. With a brd helping them I'm sure I'll have some trouble till lvl 61ish when I start doing more damage with my katanas. Anyway, I'd like some tips on gear selection, gameplay tips, etc.

Here is my current equip. Any tips on pieces I should pick up are welcome. (Will get AF and prob some pieces of Arhat +1)

Weapons: Top katanas for lvl. Any tips on kats are welcome as well.
Neck: PCC and spirit torque. Will get evasion torque at 65
Head: Emp pin and Voyager sallet for ws. Walhara turban, and Ohat ready to go.
Body: Jujitsu Gi for tp, Luisant Haubert for WS, will have SH and Hauby at appropriate levels. And what do you guys think about a brynie for tping in on low IT VT mobs?
Legs: Federation legs, Might make myself another luisant legs for WS, thinking about the lvl 50 jse legs.
Feet: Fuma kyahans, Federation sabatons for WS. Might make myself another luisant feet for WS (loaning these pieces out atm, made another body but man the legs just dont wanna hq)
Rings: Rajas and sniper, have str ring for WS and Mermaid Ring for voking
Earring: Dodge earrings atm, have the +6 evasion skill (with brd song) earrings at 52 and 2x eris earrings at 53.
Hands: H kotes. will get a pair of alkys at 70 for ws. Have palas for when lvl 60.
Belt: Have swordbelt +1, survival belt, rk belt +2, swift belt. Will get scouters rope at 70.
Back: Have bat cape, jaguar mantel, amement +1, High breath mantel
Ammo: RSE sachet (hume), that chakram that gives +2 str when out of nation, and bombcore. Will get ungur at 70.

Current food is Dorado sushi, although I can use any food (not hqs though, I'm not rich like that)

As you can see I have decent equip, and am willing to spam the ele wheel. We will be xping in TOAU as soon as it becomes effective (lvl 55ish?). I just wanna know what to do to hold hate like a champ.

Currently what I do is voke on pull, blind para slow, recast blink, voke, then spam ele wheel. On IT to IT++ mobs this holds hate no problem, but when the mob starts getting into low IT and VT territory, the melees have been spamming WS fast and early, not giving me enough time to establish hate. This hasn't caused any deaths yet or mp sinks, but I feel gimped not being able to hold hate. I don't want to rely on a sata to hold hate either.

I've been playing Ninja right in the same range lately, so hopefully some of my advice will give you some perspective...

I took PLD to 75. I was so used to having the hate on me at every waking moment. As a PLD, anytime that the hate left me for even a second, I felt like a failure. This made it very hard for me to cope with Ninja, because you just don't get the hate holding ability that PLD does.

Your gear is very good, nearly identical to mine. Ninja just doesn't get enough to hold that strong strong hate like PLD. If anything, I'd ask your static-mates to not WS in the beginning of a fight and let you establish a little enmity before they decide to go crazy. +Enmity gear macro'd into provoke can't hurt, but you're gonna have to face the sad truth that you aren't going to have the hate 100% of the time.

As a long time MNK, I've been kind of spoiled with merit style exp, but thats not how it works at that level. I always expect my parties to pull 8k/hour, and if they aren't I feel like I'm the reason its not happening. My advice would be to take it easy on yourself...once you get to level 60ish it should become a little easier with the gear available to tank more efficiently.

As far as this discussion goes, I'd be interested to hear how other ninjas have held hate. I always feel like my damage output blows, and I'm also looking for any small tips that could help in my Ninja adventure.
 
Back when I was a lv 50 ninja I didn't waste my time even gear swapping, ninja ws is worthless until 75. The only thing I would use your TP for is an extra voke. go for as much enmity as you can muster up. enmity>eva>hp. don't look to build STR or anything like that just focus on putting as much enmity as possible everywhere you can, especially if you don't have a thf or /thf.

The idea to only equip enmity for voking doesn't really work, that could be one of the reasons you lose hate. Equip enmity and don't take it off, you're there to tank. Dorado is perfect, don't need anything else.

Also maybe even pick up a Cache Nez, since you're job is to not get hit, then you won't miss the def, and while leveling, evasion doesn't save you often enough to stack it like enmity will save your team.
 
Tell your melees to not go "ZOMG MOB KILL DIE MOB WS WS WS". Anyone would come across this problem. It's not your fault. We can give you as much help as possible, but this still won't help you hold hate if they all unleash weaponskills rather early into the fight.

Thats retarded. Why not throw back on a piece that gives you oogles of Evasion for its level? I will however agree that Dorado has been my food of choice as well.

Macro in your Enmity, don't listen to this guy.
 
your gear is as much as you can get really. 50-60 is really a bad time for nin. the elemental wheel, even when it does full damage is really only as much as a normal 2h weapon hit from other jobs, so your damage is minimal at best, assuming you aren't fighting something that is weak to slashing (why would you be fighting trees, anyway?)

my advice to you is to make sure those 3 melee DD sub nin, do the pulling yourself for a little extra hate, and keep berserk up at all times.

you still will probably find hate bouncing off of you and the other melee, but its better than being dead weight.

trust me, at 60, you'll get blade:jin, and you will laugh all the way to 75.

edit: oh yea, at 55+ when you're going to aht urhgan areas, buy squid sushi+1. it's better than dorado sushi and if you get the food duration buff you end up saving money.

Sushi is cool and all, but you'll drop a fortune fighting colibri. I played nin from like 52 to 55 on colibri and just gave up on food. I ended up spamming the elemental wheel a lot, but not for damage, but because just the act of casting a spell pulls hate, and I needed that extra hate with a hard hitting melee in the group.
 
Why Alky's for WS? Isn't Jin majorly DEX based? Dunno, just never seen any Ninjas use it before. Also, the Lv50 JSE Body and Legs are decent if you're needing extra Enmity (which is often the case with Ninja), and you may even find the JSE body a better all-round idle piece than Jujitsu gi.

Other than that it looks near-perfect.. not sure why you're even asking for tips, as you seem to know exactly what you're doing. Only thing i'd say is that the O.Kote's extra Att outshines the -Eva, in my opinion.

30% DEX, 30% STR. I usually see better dmg with more STR than DEX but i'd never use alky's. Hopefully when limbus starts dropping NIN items again i'll be albe to test AF+1 gloves, atm it's O Kote in daytime and Koga Tekko at night.

Thanks for the replies guys. Here's what I gathered so far.

1. Cache Nez - Picked one up today, was lucky one was up. Will put it in my voke macro and switch out to emp pin for for tping. At lvl 50 I will have mermaids ring (+2), JSE body and legs (+2) Dash belt (+2) Cache Nez (+1) on top of Dorado sushi and High breath mantel emn.

2. I have serveral gear swap macros. A voke macro with lots of emn, a regular emn gear macro for when the mob starts bouncing like crazy, a eva set for when I'm naked and Ni is down, a acc macro for when everyone is going fine, and a str macro for WS. I didn't know Jin was dex and str, I'm used to just stacking STR for WS i guess for my war.

3. I can't wait for blade jin. I started using the one after blade to on my last pt (can't remember the name of ws) and I was doing 200-300 per WS without bard, which isn't bad.

4. I'm asking for help because I just want to be sure I'm using the right gear for the right situation. Also I hate not being to hold hate and wanted to see if there was anything I'm missing. My parry is about 25 under cap at the moment so maybe I'll try to work that up a little ( I can war full luisant set for massive -eva so parry can proc more, if I'm not mistaken eva triggers first before parry).

5. >< I had O kotes but sold them for H kotes because of the -eva. Once I get more eva gear maybe i'll get O kotes again.

6. I can't ask the DDs to hold back because they are all friends of mine for years on this game and they would relish the opportunity to try to outdo me. The only thing that will get them to hold back is multiple deaths.../hits two hour macro by accident (lol yeah like I'm noob enough to have a 2 hr macro....)


Anyway, thanks for the tips and feel free to add more.
 
My advice: bring several stacks of mithkabobs to colibri. It's not that expensive, and it'll make all the difference, I kept hate like a paladin against rampages if I had WS'd.

Also, I've heard everywhere that macroing +enmity doesn't do anything because +enmity only causes you to lose enmity more slowly over time. Macroing it instantaneously will have a very small effect, so I would save the macro space and the sweat off your healer's brow from that extra gear swapping.

To see support for this, look at the merit menu. Meriting enmity will decrease the rate of enmity loss, not boost the enmity gained from each action. This combined with the fact that Wiki says meriting enmity gives +1 enmity per merit tells us by the transitive property that +1 enmity decreases the rate of enmity loss.

ok macroing enmity might work for PLD, mainly because almost every piece of PLD gear has enmity on it end game. so when you "macro enmity" you're mainly just building on top of what you already have. With Ninja they don't get as lucky to have every piece of equip have enmity, and enmity of course will help your provoke and ninjutsu etc... BUT it also helps with your main enmity reduction, thats why you full time enmity. Have you ever seen a pld try to tank with 0 enmity? Yeah... obviously it doesn't happen, but thats my point, you won't see a PLD swap out ALL of their enmity gear while they stand there and get hit.

Don't macro in your heavy enmity, don't listen to that guy.

EDIT also on Diabllos, you don't even have ninja to 75 so why are you rating me down when.. oh look I have 75 ninja.

When I was taking nin to 75 (I was doing it around the time the 2h mods came into play), I used a GK until I got Jin. You need to keep your katana leveled, of course, but when its leveled, switching to a GK will increase your DPS and help you hold hate a little.

lol, people can say "zomg, stupid nin with GK," but they need to realize you have to hit something with something other than a butter knife. Katana damage is laughable at those levels against higher mobs. But after you get Jin, use Jin.

I disagree. I didn't waste my time gear swapping until blade: jin

Saying its worthless before 75 is incorrect. When I loose hate a 400-600 Blade:jin always helps me regain hate.

Yea though, i didn't focus on DMG until Jin.
