Didn't think I would ever have to ask for some help on this, I'm an arrogant bastard when it comes to hardware.
Anyway, as of a few hours ago I was infected with a rootkit that seems to have caused problems with several things. Not a problem, cleaned that off of the pc easily. Unfortunately for me the problems remained.
The most annoying of which is, something was edited with my ethernet networking card, causing my connection to show up as "limited and/or no connectivity"
This is not a network problem as I'm talking to you from a wired pc on the same router. I have ubuntu on another hard drive also, and I can switch over to that and use the internet fine as well, so it has to be a problem with the windows install.
I know I can just reformat and get rid of it completely but I really don't want to have to reinstall windows again and patch up ffxi and everything else for the THIRD time this year.
I'll give you the laydown of my attempts to fix this:
1-> Booted into safemode and cleaned the rootkit off of the pc, then checked the registry for any changes to my cards and other hardware. Found some of those so fixed it and booted back to normal mode.
2-> Problems still persisted, but the virus was gone. At this point i assumed it was a problem with the drivers so I uninstalled the chipset and ethernet card drivers and reinstalled them from scratch. This did nothing as well.
This is my current situation now. I didn't check the registry for issues with the drivers themselves. I don't really know how to identify such a problem in binary code so I left that alone.
If I don't get this fixed it really does put me in a place where I have to reformat, and I really, really don't want to do that.
Help me out
