New Anime Chat Thread

I'd recommend these, they're my favorites for what's come out in the last year and all of them are complete. None of them are featuring the harem theme, either:

Jormungand
Sword Art Online
Guilty Crown
Moretsu Pirates

So, I've been out of Anime for roughly 3 years now and I've been getting that urge to watch it again. Anyone got any good ones that I could start with? Keep in mind, I'm not a big fan of Harem Animes. It's always the same old plot. Though, Shuffle! was an amazing one IMO. I loved that he went for the girl who didn't chase him in the end.

I'm not a fan of Harems myself. I liked Shuffle! a lot too, but really, I don't consider is a harem. When you add Yandere into the mix, I think that nulls it out for me. I'm always down for some Yandere batshit-shit, with the exception being School Days, I hate that so much. Anyway, aside from romances (don't be bashful, it's one of my favorite genres) what are you in to? I'll list some good romance anime, trying to stay away from Harems, but some of like Shuffle, in that you just have to watch them.

Kimi-Kiss Pure Rogue
Toradora! (best Tsundere in existence resides here)
Welcome to the N.H.K. (I think any of us shut-ins or previous shut-ins can enjoy this to no end)
Suzuka (classic)
Mirai Nikki (get over the male and female lead being annoying, it's awesome) Yandere - Yandere - Yandere
Kokoro Connect (more "psychological", it takes some episodes to realize that, but has a lot of romance done in a none typical fashion; it'll be a classic)
Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! (just... amazing, and most everyone is crazy, but in a delusional fashion not Yandere style)

I could go on for a while, so if you like my suggestions just let me know and I'll give you more later. If you don't like most of those, then I'm afraid I'll be of no use.

As for taking a stab in other areas, I'll list some of my absolute favorites in the "smart" and "psychological" categories.

Bakemonogatari
Nisemonogatari

Those two are very abstract, which I love, but the writing is... unique and amazing. There is no other writer on the planet like Nisio Isin, he's a world wonder.

Madoka Magica (don't quit after 2 episodes thinking it's your typical cutesy Mahou Shojo - DO NOT DO IT)
Steins;Gate (the only time travel anime, or hell, anything, done right)
Un-Go (if you like detective style anime - I have a lot of stuff like this to recommend)

I'll touch on Bajaratt's picks too. Jormungand is incredibly badass (if you dig it, check out Black Lagoon S1 and S2). Guilty Crown -was- fantastic, and then it ended in a rush (more like the last half of the story), it's like the writer just got tired mid-way through. That said, the journey was fun. Sword Art Online is great if, and only if, you haven't read it. I had already read it, so for me, it was to hasty and not as fleshed out as it should have been. I enjoyed watching it, but when it was over, I was really, really glad for it to be done. The second season arc was, well, like Guilty Crown, it was too fast and poorly done, though if you haven't read it, you probably wont notice this. I didn't watch Boobie Pirates, but I wont deny it seems decent enough, it's just not my cup of tea. It's fairly popular at the very least, in America (somehow).

And then I have some rather long winded posts above this about other things, some of these included. Anyway, this should get you at least a few worth watching, let me know when you run dry or want more information.

I've seen welcome to the N.H.K. Good anime.

I like comedies but not over the top ones. Good romance ones aren't too bad. I really loved Higurashi and that will always remain one of my favorite to this day. Um.. ya, I don't know. I'll try out a few recommended here and let you all know if I like em or not.

Well, if you like Higurashi, that's easy. There aren't too many anime shows in that category of things, much less ones worth watching.

Shiki (Vampires done 100% right without Twilight bullshit; typical rural town in the middle of nowhere setting too)
Umineko no Naku Koro ni (same writer as Higurashi and in my opinion the better of the two)
Another
Mirai Nikki
Madoka Magica (could fit here, depending on how you look at things)
School Days (you may actually like it if this is your thing)
Deadman Wonderland (may be stretching this one, and really, it's not very good anyway, but worth tossing out there)

Depending on if you enjoyed the time looping in Higurashi:

Chaos;Head (so-so anime only, but it sort of sets the tone for S;G. if you're not picky though, skip it)
Steins;Gate
^--If you get on well with them, Robtics;Notes is currently airing. It ends up being a damn good "thriller" but they aren't quite done setting up the set pieces in the anime just yet.

And if you're interested in the visual novels for Higurashi, which are quite different and much, much better than the anime (all "seasons")... they're out there, in English, go get them through whatever method you prefer. Just beware the sausage fingers.

You know, truly good romance anime/manga don't seem common to me :P many have romance but seem poorly done. Or maybe I just haven't found the good ones yet.

You know, I haven't really watched anime in awhile either thinking about. Also, I only now realized that Bleach no longer is making anime :P

Because of that. You don't pay enough attention to the medium.

The show for Deadman Wonderland stopped short, like right before it really actually gets super badass, and they changed a tiny bit in that final confrontation. The manga.. o m g. It's pretty freaking fantastic, sadly the writer has been on haitus since she was having a baby and uh.. well there hasn't been a new chapter in a long, long time. Which is sad, because I was really enjoying how batshit crazy things were getting.

I take that back, it looks like DW has resumed.

that's cause I just started focusing more on Manga :P most anime I do watch is the older stuff that Toonami Aftermath plays.

I want new chapters too :( been so long. At least it's finally started again :P

Yeah, Toonami Aftermath would turn me off from anime too. If you want the good stuff you're going to have to do better than that crap. At the very least, don't go around saying what you did when that's your main source of consumption. There are tons of great romance anime shows out there, and more now than ever since the genre has become very popular in Japan. I do wonder though if by "poorly done" you mean the cultural differences Japanese people go through as opposed to our approach to romance. Sure it's frustrating to see their shyness (from our cultural perspective), but really, that's how it is there between two Japanese people (in general).

Toonami Aftermath doesn't turn me off of anime, it just is the old school anime I remember watching as a kid :P stuff I enjoyed as a kid. Like Yu Yu Hakusho or Cowboy Bebop or such. I'd say those are pretty good.

But I dunno, I've found getting into manga easier than the anime.

I'm looking at the Spring 2013 season, and there's several shows that I'm interested in. I'm curious what everyone else is going to watch.

Shingeki no Kyojin - Humanity lives behind hugely walled cities to survive against the Giants who eat people. One day, the main character's city gets broken into and his mom gets eaten, so he vows revenge. It looks a little darker than your typical shounen.

Devil Survivor 2 the Animation - I was sold on this simply because it's a another Shin Megami anime; and I really enjoy all of the series that I've seen. I haven't had a chance to play the game, so I'm definitely looking forward to the anime, especially if they did as good of a job with this as they did with Person 4.

Those are the only two that I know right off the bat I'm going to check out, I'll probably look at one of the multiple gundam clones that are starting next month, and some of the comedy shows, like Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru. I'll also be watching the Toriko/DBZ cross-over, as I'm keeping up with Toriko and I was a fan of DBZ.

Also, Katanagatari is going to be re-run, according to the schedule chart I've seen. It's a good 13-episode anime; but each episode is an hour long. I'd recommend it if you haven't seen it, hopefully this time you won't have to wait a month between each episode.

Bah, I was content with just skimming the chart and allowing myself to be surprised come the first round of episodes. I'll go read them now (but later) so I can get back to you on this.

Aku no Hana (if this isn't good I'll be a bit upset)
Yahari Ore
Dansai Bunri
Yondemasuyo, Azazel-san S2 (so damn funny)
Mayakawa-ke (love Lucky Star)
RDG Red Data Girl
Oreimo S2
Haiyore! S2
Railgun S

As well as the two you mentioned. I'll probably give just about all of them (the anime of the season) 1-2 episodes, but I'm sure/hoping these will stick. I typically do not like the "SD" or "DD" format comedy spin-offs of things, but the Fist of the North Star one looks hilarious... Kenshiro as a 7-11 clerk, heh. I don't get why they're re-airing Katanagatari though, especially so soon after it finished airing. The Steins;Gate movie will probably be ace as well and dammit to hell for no Kizumonogatari showing up despite the awesome PV/PR showing a month or so ago.

I'm curious about Yondemasuyo, Azazel-san, is it stupid humor like Cuticle Detective Inaba, or is it actually funny? I barely made it through the first episode of Cuticle Detective and promptly deleted everything else that I had downloaded, I couldn't stand the humor.

I would label it as a slap-stick, absolutely. I typically hate the genre, but love that show. It's vile, nasty, and definitely not safe for kids nor work.

I might give it a shot then. I just couldn't stand the immature comedy humor of cuticle Detective, it reminded me of bobobo-bo bo-bobo; designed for kids and everyone over the age of 8 would find it tedious. Slap-stick wouldn't bother me, but there were stupid word gags and people just acting retarded in cuticle detective that annoyed the crap out of me.

Yeah, Inaba was annoying but I did enjoy the 3rd episode, I think it was, when the police officers daughter was highly involved and she built a house toward the end. She was awesome. If the show was just about her I'd have kept up for sure.

So, you guys enjoying the new shows this season? I haven't started yet as I've been to addicted to playing damn games all of a sudden. Let me know if anything is standing out as potential win or fail so I know where to start.

I'm enjoying devil survivor and attack on titan. I like that they spent the first two episodes of attack on titan actually setting the main character's drive and motivation for the rest of the show. They did a fair amount of world building, so now they can get to the main plot of the show, I'm just hoping they're going to institute a time skip between episode 2 and 3 to make it flow better.

I also have gargantia on the verdurous planet, future human with a sentient gundam gets stuck on old earth, I'm still waiting for it to get going, but for now it's kind of interesting. I've also downloaded Valvrave the Liberator, but have not started it yet.
