Okay, big problem I have here because of the release of the expansion. There's a -huge- amount of new jobs in Valkurm, and like, very few regular jobs. There aren't even enough healers for parties in Valkurm, because the groups tend to be almost nothing but the new jobs. I haven't been there myself, but listening to LS members that -are- there with new jobs, I know that at least 3 out of 6 jobs in those parties are the new jobs, if not more.
Why is this a problem? Well for one, groups will -not- be like that later on, when people finally get bored with the new toys, and go back to their old jobs. Then you're stuck with a level 22 Blue Mage that doesn't know how to play their job correctly. The Valkurm (or Buburimu) parties are the first parties that jobs usually get for exp, and its where people should be learning how their job fits into a party. When there aren't typical parties, everyone gets tossed into a random role instead of learning which roles are best for their party. I got asked while soloing my 11 BLU/RDM to join a party and be main healer. Okay, I'm no expert on Blue Mages, but I know they are -not- healers, especially not with a Red Mage subjob. Blue Mages don't even get an ability to heal other party members until like, level 16 I believe, and having a Cure spell with the healing skill of a level 5 red mage isn't really the best MAIN healer.
Honestly, I feel pretty confident in my idea of what Blue mage -should- do in a party, based on the soloing I've done and my ideas of what its abilities allow it to do, but I'm waiting to get into a party until the 95% of the current new-jobs will get bored and go back to their normal jobs.
Of course, this party arrangement leads me to one of my most hated things in FFXI. Powerleveling people that don't know how to do their job. Since Corsair, Puppetmaster and Blue Mage are all new jobs, -no one- knows exactly how to do their job, so there's -no- excuse for power leveling them. "There's no white mages in Valkurm though", that's no excuse! Powerleveling people that can't do their jobs just leaves problems for higher level parties being stuck with stupid people that can't do their jobs. This is especially bad for people PLing Blue Mages, since chances are, the Blue Mages aren't learning their abilities, which is my next little rant.
Blue Mages. There's too many of them near the end of dunes, or already -out- of dunes, for my liking. Why? I honestly don't think they have all, or even most, of their abilities. People may not think this is a problem, because the ones that see these Blue Mages are the ones in the parties that are being powerleveled, so they don't really notice things like that. But in comparison, a Blue Mage not learning all its abilities when it should, would be like a White Mage running around without the Bar-spells. Or a Black Mage going through Valkurm with nothing but Stone and Poison. Or a Warrior tanking with nothing but a sword and level one armor. Blue Magic abilities are crucial parts of the job, just like White/Black magic spells, or good armor, and skipping them just isn't acceptable.
"It's too hard to learn Blue Magic". Get another job then! Yes, it takes patience to get the abilities unless you have unusually good luck, but if you really want to play Blue Mage, you -have- to do it. Think of it this way, instead of buying the spells, and farming for the gil you need to buy them, you're spending that time learning the abilities directly instead. Honestly, I think the only people that would really complain about the learning system of Blue Mage abilities are gilbuyers, who don't want to spend time working for their abilities, and just want to spend some money and have the abilities handed to them. I don't think there's any job that's really that cheap to level, so everyone needs to do farming at some point, meaning they should be used to the idea of spending time to get certain things, just this time it's getting the item directly, like looking for rare items or something.
I can't wait until this rush of jobs dies off... Then I can stop soloing my Blue Mage and show parties what a good Blue Mage can do. With all its abilities, maxed Blue Magic skill, and knowing when to use which abilities, Blue Mage is strong, yet I've heard from a lot of people "Blue Mage can't deal much damage". Obviously if you're not playing it right, it wont deal much damage...
