This isn't really a flame as it more confused me than annoyed me, but... when did /NIN become essential in low level party-age? I've been levelling my new character to 30 on WAR/MNK, so I sat myself in Khazam at level 29 seeking while I did some of my readings. Every single invite I received went along the lines of "/NIN {Do you have it?} No? {That's too bad.}"

Now call me old fashioned, but I think that's silly. First of all, I didn't have NIN as WAR was my first to 30 lol. Second, I think a WAR/MNK can tank Mandies just fine - I had a nice little Tanking build waiting in the wings and even some appropriate food. Mandies chew threw shadows anyway. Let alone the fact that a WAR/MNK can fill a solid DD role at those levels with Sturmwind.

I don't know, it struck me as a little odd. People can invite whoever they wish into their parties and I understand the benefits of /NIN, but it's far from NEEDED. This just irked me. And the condescension - good lord! Yes, it's a new character. Yes, he's rank three. I don't need to be told "tanks take all the damage, so they need to sub ninja lol" because a) it's not true and b) I know what a tank is. Evidently more than you, slick.

How did people subsist before Ninja? Thoughts?

Unfortunately I have to say, player mentality.

A lot of people expect you, even if you have just started (over) with a new character that you have every advanced job unlocked and have top notch gear.

Anyway, I have gotten through the jungles on war as ghetto pld with /whm and drinks, axe and shield.
Which worked tons better then /nin in the jungles with both holding hate and dream flower.

Do they ask PLD to sub nin as well? Although, I know that PLD/NIN works great after flash.

I remember searching the dunes for someone not so long ago and found a lot of people subbing NIN, hahahaha. (yes, pre 20).

In Khazam /nin is worthless really. I'd never swap a war/mnk for a war/nin, ever. Actually, you can pretty much do whatever in khazam, mandies really don't hit that hard, but they do hit often, so shadows are a waste of time (and damage if you keep trying to re-apply).

So yeah, don't be descouraged, my war was /mnk, /sam, /whatever before i did /nin for shadows.

Most people dont think logically in this game so even if that was stupid it's not surprising.
I had a party last night vs weapons on my low lv whm and no none thought to use /nin.

Well I got my WAR to 37 with MNK sub and actually tanked in EVERY single party. Did a good job as well... Might just be the garka HP.

MNK was the first job I lvl'd so i could use it as a sub for WAR. I lvl'd WAR as a sub for NIN!

I leveled in Kazham back in the days when WAR wasn't really popular and the NIN craze was just catching on. Even though it wasn't hugely popular, people still required it for 90% of the melee subjobs. With that said, I was able to easily get 2 WAR/NIN or a WAR/NIN and NIN for tanks in any party I joined. You can easily get enough shadows especially with NIN to negate a majority of the damage taken versus a meat tank.

This becomes especially obvious when you get to the levels of gobs. Not only does the mandy's accuracy drop off making keeping shadows much easier, you can tank gobs relatively well with a semi decent group. This doesn't mean /MNK is worthless, it has its uses, but I prefer to conserve MP when I can and /NIN can help me survive that much better. Also, cheap and abundant invis.

for low lvl, war/mnk with great axe really great tho.

i guess /nin works for high lvl automatically became good for low lvl

I've been leveling a lot recently in those zones (VD, Qufim, Jungles~), and sadly, people really sub nin pre 20 (unless a lvl synch pt mt, but again ppl go in selbina and change sj). I don't see a real advantage to sub nin at all at those levels (Tonko @18?). You don't have any tools for hate/shadows and you lack dual wield ability until 20+. I even encountered a NIN/WAR this week with no tools at all (NIN w/o Utsusemi are really squishy do they heh?)

Those zones are and will always be a sandbox imo. If you know how to play, what sj to have, adequate gears, food, etc., you don't have anything to really learn. Just try to breeze through the area w/out too much thinking that's it. If you want, in the other hand, try few things, that's the place to do it lol. You won't get yelled at or if you get yelled at you can disband and go solo lol.

As for WAR/MNK, idk why people insist to make them tank w/ /NIN. I know PLD and NIN are hard to come by nowadays but hell DNC can make a good substitution. I was even purposely getting SA in jungle on my RDM 2 weeks ago and I was doing a hell of a job lol (people even called me crazy D: ). So let them /MNK and do crazy damage and take damage that's it. Like someone said, at some point, they don't hit that hard and they're just gonna chew in 2 secs through shadows anyway.

edit: fixed the syntax in some of my sentences since I'm a noob at english >.>

This is hard to pull off anymore, nin's can't keep hate (or any job in general, most of the time it's that one best geared person keeping hate) worth crap at that lvl and mandies hit 2 times consistently, so your going to get hit in 1-2 rounds, and after you do it's quite a hastle getting shadows back up, and if you pick to do so you're really losing time/damage.

My point is that you don't even need shadows since they hit for so little anyways, thus why /mnk is preferred.

Hope this doesn't turn into the epic to /nin or not to /nin, or when to do so. There have been many debates about it in the past, and it's a matter of opinion. However, in this case, there's no real reason, since you only have ichi and it's all of 3 shadows vs. mobs who hit fast but as hard as young schoolgirls.

They can hit pretty hard dont let the white socks and plaid skirts fool you!!! ;)

I think the whole problem probably comes from higher level players leveling lower-level jobs and wanting job combinations they're used to seeing that work well at higher levels. That's my best guess at least, since I never partied past level 31, I can't say for sure, but that's the conclusion I come to from my experience.

I remember once I got into an argument with someone in Valkurm Dunes because he had criticized my choice of job/subjob (which I was soloing at the time, no intention of getting in a party) yet he was a level 10 COR/NIN and claimed that somehow that was his best choice at that level.

The sad part was that when I mentioned that whole argument with my Linkshell at the time, someone in there argued with me that it probably was the best, saying it would probably boost his stats more than /MNK or /WAR, or even be more useful than /WHM or even /RDM at that level. <.<;

I dunno, I just think a lot of players have this huge thing for /NIN that carries over to their low level jobs even when it might not be useful. I don't see anything wrong with WAR/MNK at level 30 (although I've only hit that level once, lol, so maybe I'm wrong.)

Although I don't have an answer to your question I can sympathize.

I skipped leveling with parties on my SMN from 20-current (32 I think). After hitting 20 I started to flag up while solo'ing to join parties. After receiving three /tells "Party do you need it? Fenrir do you have it?" I said to myself f this. Why the hell do they care if I have him or not? Back then SMNs did just fine with carby only. The fact of the matter was I did have fenrir. I've had him since level 1, but didn't want to go through partying with people like that so I solo'd the rest of the way...

Like Lavi said, I blasted through the jungles with Exo with one WAR/NIN and one NIN/WAR, and using simple communication to swap hate when shadows were down. I think we went from 27-32 like that, and as long as it's two competent people, you can negate almost all damage.

Still, it's incredibly situational, and other than that one minor instance, I've never seen any successful combos that compare.

I wrote a flame about this like... almost 2 years ago I think, and got a lot of crap over it. People think /nin is absolutely required to accomplish anything in this game and it's really not.
