Ok so i've started to merit my NIN, now so far i'm going for:

Katana
Crit Rate
Evasion
Ninja Tool Expertise (cheap skate ftw)
STR

Now i'm going to leave HP/MP alone incase I decide to do a mage job/another DD. They aren't that important and can wait till I decide what else i'm going to do in game.

Now for my questions. Sange, is it worth skilling up my throwing for? I'm guessing a resounding no. However i'd like some input from other NIN's. Also Group 1 merits, Subtle Blow & San spells. Are these worth spending merit points in or not? I wouldn't get all the San spells, probably just fully merit one of them (most likely Hyoton as Tsurara is uber cheap). Part of me wants to at least spend my allotted merits in each category, but there's also the part of me that really can't be bothered if it's not necessary/useful.

Please no replies that are just "No" or "Yes" i'd like reasons why. I'm trying to pimp out myself with merits as best as I can, whilst working on getting sea/sky.

Just do expertise to 5/5 and save the merits you'd spend on another group 2 on something else. Or level a san spell that will be useful for going onto a debuff (ie Jubaku) to help with resist rates.

Edit: Oh, and do MP if you're really considering leveling a mage job seriously after NIN, it'll be a good excuse to buy a cassie ;)

Ok Blabj..... Group 2 you can do a max of 3 merits in so I have 3/3 Nin Tool Expertise and then 3 spare. We don't even get Jubaku: Ni, the San spells are only the elemental ones :p.

the San line of spells is junk.
Sange isnt that great but if you happen to already have the throwing skill capped it can be a nice tool for opening vs a monster for hate.
Subtle blow merits are for soloing mostly although if you are bored you can just chuck merts into that.
Evasion isnt needed.
You prettymuch the basic idea correct for what to merit.

I think he means to do the elemental jutsu that lowers ice resist, that is, Hyton:San.

People casting Paralyze II, which is far better, aha aha, will also thank you.

I'd avoid meriting evasionskill unless you don't plan on lvling another melee job. and ninja tier 2 merits should come last, as they kinda suck, the abilities anyways, I haven't tried San spells, although id like to experiment with them if i can get the relic head and some MAB/int/skill gear.

Evasion to me seems a lot more useful than Guard/Parrying or Shield skill to be honest.
But it's part of the Combat Skills category, so if you have other melee jobs coming up then your CS merits may be better spent there. 20 max = 8 into one weapon, 8 into a second (SAM, WAR, MNK... whatever your secondary job may be), and 4 left over for another weapon.

Example I'm putting 8 into GA, 8 into axe, and 4 into katana. No room for Evasion as it's likely going to be the least useful across all my jobs.

I see quite a few NINs completely ditching the evasion setup at 75 and just going purely for DD gear. I imagine this may be a problem if you're tanking HNMs and the like but I've no experience there so maybe someone else can shed some light.

I find that eva is pretty much useless unless you're doing something like chary. Haste+Enmity for HNM, so enmity merits is deffinetly worth looking into for your nin, in all situations really. Even if you're planning on making nin your only 75 i'd say maybe do 3str and 2dex, being that dex is a huge mod in jin as well as str. I myself am 5str but i have many other 75s that i don't really want/need dex for.

You hit the hammar on the nail with your idea's, but like other people said you should keep your combat merits open for weapons, i went 8 h2h, 8 katana and 4 arch.

Don't forget about the enmity+ either, for nin this is great in all aspects of fighting.

I wouldn't touch Enmity unless the only other job you plan on levelling is PLD or it's going to hurt. For HNM's you can get more than enough +Enmity from gear and food. Also it's not good for meripo as the object isn't to tank the mob by yourself but to bounce hate around. As said before the San line is junk and they don't even lower elemental resistance any more than the Ni you already have.

Have to disagree, hate will still bounced with max enmity merits, wars and mnks will always turn it after they ws. Also, when it comes to HNM. NIN needs all the enmity it can get. Especially if you aren't /drk, the mobs won't look at you. (Maybe it's harder for me though because the pld/nin's in my ls are quite good) /shrug, if he's going to lvl other jobs i'll admit he wouldn't need it but if he plans on taking nin seriously to end game. They deffinetly won't hurt him.

I think it's definately something to consider, first I need sea and sky access. Also I think i'd be going /drk as the LS i'm applying to requires drk sub for entrance.

Merit 2-4 MP for nin/drk. Merit enmity and make up for it on other jobs with -enmity gear if you plan on tanking end-game stuff.

STR go 5/5

Why: It helps on WS, and for those times when you are part of the skillchain it will help your damage to actually do something.

Subtle Blow go full merits on as well

Why: It's great for soloing, and for when you're tanking stuff like faf who have some hella bad TP moves. It may not be a "whole lot" less TP given, but every little bit counts.

Crit 4/4

Why: It explains itself really, crit helps on melee and WS damage.

Katana 8/8

Why: Better Accuracy and Attack, will make WS higher and will let you actually land them consistent on bigger mobs.

Evasion 4/4

Why: At least until you get another job leveled, it won't be a "HUGE" difference, but again, every little bit helps.

Emnity 4/4

Why: The difference isn't as big as every makes it out to be, I have whm leveled as well, I still don't take hate on it at all. Emnity merits combined with food and gear will help your hate to become solid faster and let your mages do stronger and more MBs.

Sange 0/0

Why: It sucks, don't even worry about it.

Ninja Tool Expertise 3/3

Why: It's the only part of the the secondary catigories that's worth meriting to be honest with you.

San: Huton 3/3

Why: This one is more optional because most good red mages won't have any trouble landing Paralyze or Paralyze II, but just incase they are you have this to help them out a little bit.

Ninjutsu Magic 8/8

Why: To help land those enfeebles on bigger NMs.

HP5 MP5

Why: HP can help you survive, and MP just incase you ever level a mage or pld. MP also helps on nin/drk.

Pray

Why: So SE wil give us Jubaku: Ni one day.

If you need more detailed responses just PM me or ask on here.

I don't like the idea of demeriting anything because of the time basically lost on it even if it's only a couple of hours, it's still a couple of hours I had to spend meritting. So personally, I'd make the decision to get it or not before putting the merit into it.

Enmity:
Although WHM can get a lot of -enm gear rather easily (I am sitting at around 20 without merits), other jobs, most importantly lower level jobs where tanks don't have access to +enm gear and are new to the jobs, it will be an issue. Even at end levels though, I have seen fully meritted PLDs with massive amounts of enm lose hate because of a hate reset move that was unavoidable or they just took to many hits or whatever, but it does happen. That extra enmity on a job that doesn't want hate and you were slowly been building hate that whole time can be a bit much for someone to get hate off of you quick enough. Besides, if you think about it, someone meritting enm on PLD or NIN for tanking and having a WHM with +enm merits kind of defeats the purpose, right?

HP/MP:
I think you meant HP4/MP4 since you can only get a combined total of 8.

It all depends on if he's going to level another job or not.

Emnity:

There should always be more then one tank, that's why most LS's have co-tanks who can bounce hate off each other at will, for situations such as the one you stated.

HP/MP:

You are correct, I was in a hurry typing that, trying to finish.

while i understand you are putting 8/8/4 into weapons, alot of people dont have the that many weapons for melee that they will be using..... you are a WAR, so WAR is a little different.. but where i disagree with what you say is "least useful across all your jobs".. evasion is actually the only merit that you listed, out of those, that is USEFUL across all jobs ;) just technical wording i guess though.

most nin ditch evasion -gear- setups, but, evasion is still handy. evasion can help you avoid life/death situations -- miss aoe -- miss spike flails, etc. it works on every job :P
