Ninja or Paladin >.<;

Someone mentioned that war/nin falls out of the tanking role at around 40, and I would disagree. A brd and elegy can make war/nin an extremely powerful tank in almost any situation, better than both nin and pld. A war/nin can deal top tier damage while being able to blink off most hits, making it extremely exp efficient.

With one set of shadows, no shield on and defender down, A war will not out tank a pld or a nin often after 40, and never after 50. A war CANNOT deal top tier dmg AND tank at the same time. A war has half the ninjitsu skill of a nin the same level, and only one set of shadows. Unless you focus on def, your going to loose your shadows and not be able to get them back up. I know this, because i see it everytime i party with a war. The shadows go down, and they don't come back up. Unless a war is focused on def, they're not gonna be able to take a hit like a pld, and if they are focused on def, they're not doing half the damage they should be.

Nin are good tanks because they have lots of shadows, lots of eva, and the ninjitsu skill to recast under preasure once in awhile. Pld are good tanks because they eat def food, use defender, load vit and def gear, and forget about they're att. They also have shields, and the ablity to do alot of their own healing. A war can tank in later levels at the cost of their dmg, but they can't blink as well as a nin, and they can't take hits like a pld. A war without def tanking is a dead war, a war with def is a war with half the dmg dealing capacity they should have. (no att food, defender up, shield on, vit gear instead of str or acc) I'm not saying there are no situations where war can't tank, but they lack the flexablity of a regular tank, and your average party situation really needs that flexablity.

Kisada wasn't that you who tanked for my WHM's party for a while as WAR after our NIN DCed in Boyahda Tree? I remember after that whole thing I'd been saying that WARs can make a very decent tank if they know what they're doing.

Oh yes, they can. I've ptied with war/nins and they're the ones that tank. I've tanked as war/nin also, when there isn't a pld nor a nin seeking. So yeah, you have to kinda adapt to what you have. It depends on the player's skills...

What Meeze said. Then again he got the pleasure of leveling for a month in a static with the best Ninja on the server.

*Cough*

War/mnk is pretty damn nice also.Provoke defender berserk warcry focus dodge generate nice hate.Along with that you can also boost every now n then which turns the mobs back on you (incase it wasn't facing you). The vit bonus and counters can't be ignored either. And war can almost use all the equip pld (Koeing plus genbu's kabuto).

Edit: I guess you were right.

Sad thing is..... Our tank is WORSE than the freakin gil sellers...

Guess what? Because our tank (Lucifel) is so bad... our summoner (main healer) just died... so I have so much time to type this since we have down time...

Then we continue on... and finally reach the Valley of Sorrows...and we meet the said party above...

Lucifel says.. "Oh, Redmonkey wants me to join their party. They have 2 PL-ers..."

I make a remark about idiots who have to be PL at level 59-60 are freakin noobs.. response "Well, it's good exp" Umm...that's how you DON'T learn how to play your class.... Especially at such high levels.. and ESPECIALLY SINCE THE TWO PL-ERS are the two in the topic line!

Meh. That's what he says though. w/e. Who cares anyway.[/quote]

gah you found that =.=; Yeah that was just that one party >.< It was hard keeping hate off a guy that resisted slow, so I couldnt heal. But I've learned how to deal with that a long time ago.

When leveling my rdm I prefer PLD well just cause on rdm I am partial to my plds :-p. With one nin exception and ya know who you are :P

With my blm I prefer Nin only cause I have a static cannon pt. Makes our bard work harder but better for us because we dont have a real healer. We have a smn but with Nin he doesnt have the heal much and gets to help us more with Damage. Both Nins and Plds hold hate the same in this pt setup ... just Nin is better cause of the healing factor and has been the faster pullers ... except for Jojojo now that is one awesome little taru pld ~rawr

You're all forgetting about the Monk tank. I've tanked entire fights as a MNK/WAR with nothing but my fists while wearing -7 enmity and no SATA; Provoke is for pussies that aren't man enough to hold hate by themselves :P

WAR/NIN can tank past 40, just most don't. Mithe tanked a large portion of his way to 75 and did a great job.

sorry lol that wasn't me

A war has half the ninjitsu skill of a nin the same level, and only one set of shadows. Unless you focus on def, your going to loose your shadows and not be able to get them back up. Unless a war is focused on def, they're not gonna be able to take a hit like a pld, and if they are focused on def, they're not doing half the damage they should be.

With elegy (especially carnage elegy) and slow both on, a war won't have any problems tanking anything, even with one set of shadows. In this instance, a war doesn't need to be focused on defense to tank, they just need to put shadows up and deal as much damage as possible. They may not evade as much as a nin, and the may take a few hits, but in the end a war/nin in a proper party is just more efficient. They can deal more damage than both jobs, hold more hate than both jobs, and save almost as much MP as a ninja can. Ninjutsu skill is irrelevant when it comes to elegy.

A war can tank in later levels at the cost of their dmg, but they can't blink as well as a nin, and they can't take hits like a pld. A war without def tanking is a dead war, a war with def is a war with half the dmg dealing capacity they should have.

Actually, a war can tank a wide variety of things in later levels because of their damage. My ls fights fafnir occasionally, and my personal preference is to use war/nin and nin/war tanks. With brd songs and haste, they speed the fight up significantly through meleeing, and can also maintain a high threshold on hate. Our fastest fight had two war/nins and a nin tanking, and the blms couldn't do very much to match our wars' damage. I understand you're probably referring to party situations only, but this is just moreso to say that at the end of the monster spectrum (let alone exp), wars don't always need to sacrifice damage to tank things.

Also, obviously there isn't any job that can blink like a nin (4 shadows on ni), or take hits like a pld(excluding a few specific instances) but in later levels you don't always fight things that require evasion or defense. In fact, a lot of the time you get to fight things that chew up your shadows no matter how much evasion you have, or knock you down a few hundred HP no matter how much defense you are stacking (or both). When neither are necessities to fight, most of the time it's just better to elegy/slow a monster, and have someone blink all the hits off. Evasion and defense are normally thrown out the window in these circumstances.

I would be more inclined to say that your average party is good enough to at least slow a monster. If they can at least do that, a late level warrior will have perhaps less flexibility than a nin, but they can definitely outdamage both nin and pld, as well as take less damage than a pld.

As a Drk I prefer Paladins. I can actually use my JA without steeling hate in most parties, and that in itself is worth waiting on a Pld over a Nin.

Plus I don't like having to worry about making sure they have a the chance to put shadows up. Stun isn't a cheap spell to cast, and weapon bash only works 10% of the time.

Maybe not solo, but 2x war/nin can - AND fill 2 DD slots. Plus your statement only counts until lv73.9; after that things change.

Noxxx said:

Wrong. 2x war/nin > nin/war + war/nin. We tried a TP burn party the other day with my static, and both us war/nin's were in the top 3 damage slots (drk/war was in first), while tanking.

Ninjutsu skill means nothing at all unless you're using the elemental wheel, which any non-braindead war will not be doing. You are correct on the shadows thing - we only get 6 shadows pre-74.

Noxxx said:

That really doesn't make sense. I'm going to lose shadows regardless, even if I have 999 def. Having max def would help with the recast (if you take 0 dmg your spells are not interrupted), but the amount of DD gear we'd have to give up would not be worth the loss in DD stats.

You're also forgetting two-hours guys.

Mijin Gakure isn't likely going to save anyone, except the ninja's EXP.

Invincible has the power to keep a whole party from dying when used at the right time.

Not to mention regular abilities.

Ninja get none. :?

Paladin has Cover.

Both are pretty equal in tanking terms, but in emergency situations, a Ninja is rather helpless compared to a Paladin.

Also WAR/NIN and WAR/MNK are still very viable combos 1-75. The only ones that would really shoot these down are pretty lazy white mages.

Without them i'd have like 3 healing magic skill...

Even the best Ninjas make mistakes. Joining OH being one of them /sigh

depends on the mob and party set up. If the mob does alot of aoe then nin not the best choice also without drk or thf nin would have harder time keeping hate.

though nin are really good when you have a smn healer because they dont require as much healing

me i prefer nin just because I dont have to refresh them

so true

As a 75 paladin, 75 ninja I would rather xp as Ninja. Hate etc isn't an
issue unless your just lazy or gear is really lacking. On average with
Paladin I would average 3-5k xp per hour. Ninja on a bad day 3kish
on a decent day 5-6k on a good day 7-8k and hour. Makes merits a
lot easier. Also just solo with ninja past 37 you can get decent xp on
your own in those pt lacking days. I would go ninja. Also end game
can be very useful. I can tank all gods just as easy as on paladin but
with usually a lot less hp drain on ninja. Just my 2 cents.

well first of all.. its not the tanks job to know how to play with you.. its YOUR job (as a thf) to know how to play with the tank..

And yet the paladin has to know how to play with a thief, or the party with a thief in it will fail no matter what the thief does. Period. When you, as a paladin, claim that you can hold hate from me sa/ta'ing onto the partner, that's what I'm talking about. No, you really can't. He'll tank and he'll die and THEN you MAY get the mob back from the WHITE MAGE. When a paladin doesn't have a clue how to let up to turn the mob, that's what I'm talking about. So if a paladin isn't good enough to protect the melee partner, and yet is too good for their own good to let the mob go when the meleer provokes and uses a weaponskill, there's nothing I can do. That's a BAD paladin. Well there is something I can do there, but only post-60. And I guess that last resort--assassin--is an ok resort.

Good job eliminating the need for first vokes on both pld and thief. We stopped doing that as a class oh...8 or so months ago. Trick partners are not bait to aid the thief. Haven't been for a long time.

A thief who doesn't know how to split SA and TA...that's a bad thief post-60. It may not be optimal at all times to split, but in a party with a pickup paladin, a thief will need to keep splitting tactics in the back of their minds. With a paladin, ta/ws may suffice if the meleer cannot turn the mob or if the paladin doesn't get the whole "backing off" thing. I don't like splitting, but it has its uses, especially in paladin pickup parties. That's how a thief accomodates a paladin--by splitting, not by killing their skillchain partner.

so your saying.. babysit y our ninja so that they get used to not using ninja tools & elemental wheel? stupid.. flat out.. stupid..

And you're flat-out stupid for spamming an elemental wheel that does NOTHING for the party but keep hate when keeping hate is unbelievably easy with a hate controller in the party. I can put hate on them enough to make a firaga III disappear in the wind. Their time is better spent with debilitation and meleeing. Elemental wheel is for nins who are too cocky to play with hate controllers. It's not babysitting. It's called synergy. No nin within 60 feet of me needs to waste time with elemental wheels. They can DD and actually do something that aides in killing the mob. The blm is protected just the same. The only thing a ninja has to do in a party that I'm in...stand there and cast shadows. Anything else, like DD'ing and debilitating--fringe. I'd rather them not spam like thoughtless robots after I just put 1200 damage worth of hate on them.

Why is it that it's always a response to me...
Was my first post THAT inflammatory? Seriously do we really want to do this again?
