NM Hunting and the Law on Dimishing Return

More often than not, I find myself farming to raise money for an item of desire rather than going out to hunt the NM that drops it. For example, I raised the money to get my Monster Signa instead of camping Hoo. Most recently, I was camping Stray Mary. I made so much wool and items from tremor rams, I decided to just sell the stuff off, and farm some more to make up the remainder. Sigh.. Maybe I am just lazy.

I was wondering what the thresholds are for everyone when you decide to buy an item instead of camping for it.

Well, the only NM I ever camped was Mee Deggi. Everything else I saved up the money for and bought.

Although, I don't use NM drops that often, usually my armor is gotten from either CPs, quests, BCNMs, or crafted.

Killed Jaggedy-Eared Jack 96 Times Before I got that Damn Charm. And Killed him 10 more times for good measure.

In the Process I got Enough Money to Buy the Rabbit Charm two times from Rabbit Skins and drops from West Ronfaure alone.

NM Hunting pisses me off...I camped Mary for like 3 Months trying to get a horn for Porum....ended up killing her 11 times with no drop.

I'd love to magically get a drop and make 600k but I have absolute shit luck
 
I can't camp NM's. I find farming mobs less monotinous for me. The longest I've spent camping an NM was maybe two hours helping a linkshell member try to get the Emp. Pin.
 
NMs I've actually camped have been Lizzy and Jack, with only two times getting a drop from Lizzy out of a whole bunch of tries. Jack I've killed probably 20-30 times and never gotten a drop. I used to camp that thing all the freakin time. I have killed Emperor before. I saw it chasing a thief with no sub through the dunes once and immediately voked it off him. Got the drop that time :lol: I've killed Wyvernpoacher while in a party with no drop, and also killed Stroper Chyme in Ordelles once when going with a DRK to do his AF2.
 
I'v killed mary about 8 times without horn, one time when I was in area chocobo digging, other times she poped up when I was camping rams

For me, its not worth camping NMs when I have other ways to make big gil.

Yeah, I feel the same way. I guess that falls into the category of "You'll do more for others and yourself" category. :wink:

i, on the other hand, have no prob with drops, but i have horrible time claiming the mobs.

I camped VE once and Lizzy twice before deciding to farm for those items. Of course now I hunt NMs a lot. I could farm up the same amount of cash in the same time it takes to camp and actually get a drop. But I could also get lucky and get multiple drops in that time. You never know with these things.

back when i was level 45 or so i wanted 2 sniper rings. so naturally i decided to camp Stropper Chyme. spent 2 days (about 6 hours) trying to win the claim from the gil sellers, but when i finally did BAM! i got the drop on my first kill ever!

i ended up borrowing gil to buy the second ring, but i keep going back and camping Stropper hoping to get the drop so i can pay back my lender. over 50 kills later still no second drop. :?

I got my first archer ring on my 2nd kill. Now my record is about 3/150+ at least. Stroper is a funny guy like that.
 
You have to sub THF when you camp Stroper. Not that I ever win claim cus I'm a BLM that loooooooves killing elementals.
 
i have sometimes.

in fact my first kill (and only drop) i had THF subbed. i beat a gilseller with a Stun pull (he was too far away to voke).
 
I figure I'll camp lizzy just because there is no reason ON THIS EARTH those boots are worth near as much as the emp pin. Not only are they not as good, but the pop is so much shorter.
 
I've only camped three notorious monsters thus far, and only one successfully enough to call it a money maker. That would be Tumbling Truffle, Spiny Spipi, and the successful one (for a while) was Ashmaker Gotblut. Ashmaker I hunted for his Priests Robes, which I needed back when I was level 19, and since have sold them off. But in recent days, I can only manage to get a hermits wand in six or seven hours of camping.

I have a question that might seem off-topic, but I feel I need to ask to be a better player, and I see no better place to ask it but here.

Aside from notorious monster hunting (which I can do but it isnt lucrative right now..Or i'm doing it in the wrong places..) and crafting (which takes a hefty sum of gil to begin with..which I lack..), how can one make a good amount of money? I can not seem to net myself more than 100k, and thats in several days of working. Is there any possible way, aside from the two mentioned, that one could go about getting some decent money? I'm sorry this is off topic, but any help would be appreciated.
