No, they're losing money, just like they did on the playstation 1 and 2. Nintendo has been the only company making a profit on the console sales, Microsoft and Sony have been selling at a loss just to make their consoles affordable(sup $800 PS3 cost). They make much more money off of the games that come out for the consoles, that's how they stay in business, but for now they're just losing money.

Sony also wanted to stop making FF's a few years back because the didn't like the fact that is was all they were known for. Guess the money was too good to pass up because they're still making them.

wtf? Where did you hear that news? O.o I remember reading nothing of the sorts (actual articles and whatnot and actual interviews, don't count lolforum info). Show me where sony was trying to stop the FF series being made >.> so much wrong with that it seems

HARTFORD, Conn.—Two armed thugs tried to rob a line of people waiting for the new Sony PlayStation 3 game system to go on sale in Putnam, Conn., early yesterday and shot one man who refused to give up his money, authorities said.

About 50 kilometres away, another shopper was beaten and robbed of his new PlayStation 3 just minutes after he bought it at a store in Manchester, Conn., police said.

My god, the only time something happens in my state, and it's over a goddamn PS3. Right next to where I live too. Wahoo!

It was a few years ago. They claimed 10 was going to be the last one. I believe they were trying to get Nintendo to buy back the rights to it.

I think you're missing the point, Mirewen. Sony and Microsoft aren't charging the complete price their systems require to make. To offset this loss, they have royalties for selling games on their systems. Nintendo doesn't sell at as much of a loss, and in turn, take virtually no royalties for selling a game on their system. The amount Nintendo charges isn't even worth mentioning, if there is one. Any loss on the console is easily made up for with first party titles. Sony has no first party titles, and Microsoft has very few.

ya, that's just plain rediculous :| but it does show sony will prolly be doing just fine this round of systems again.

Ellemmire, what the fuck is wrong with you?

If Nintendo does not charge royalties to code for their platforms, they are stupid. Just because they are turning profit on the Wii, it is no where near operation margins. I'd imagine they charge less than Micro/Sony, but I also doubt it is as marginal as you portray.

It just doesn't add up of the royalties aren't worth mentioning.

Nope! I got that point ;p

they've been making claims to that for awhile, and they were rumors, nothing official. They came from word of people like Nobou quitting (or going freelancing).

what, are you really that dumb? look at the publicity they are getting.. look at the message being sent from the violent acts. "This system is so great and wanted by so many that they are willing to degrade themselves to such a level" which often makes others think (subconciously if not conciously) something like "wow! the system must be great if soo many are willing to go to great lengths to get it"

Honestly, hearing this I wouldn't think the system would be "great if so many people are willing to go to great lenths to get it." This is "Wow, people are killing others over a video game, what retards."

Great Lengths to get something, in a positive light, would be some trying competitions like swimming a river, eating bugs, or other things like that. Oh well, if people keep up the killing and robbing, we'll just see PS4 not hit US shores for the safety of our citizens.

"Yeah, they're losing around $250 per system they sell. They were going to release with a large supply, but all of the manufacturing problems led to a very small number of units. "

From a magazine I read, Just a regular blue ray player cost $1,000 at the vary least. Now PS3 has more features (and controlers... etc) so I'd guess thay losing at least 350-400.

Dose anyone see a flaw in Sony's pricing? $600 for a blue ray player (PS3) or 1,000 for a Blue ray player. I can see ALOT of people buying a PS3 to watch ONLY blue ray movies on their HDTV. I seem to remember PS2 haveing a big loss in japan cause people over their were watching DvDs instead of buying games for PS2 for a while.

If you have an older HDTV, some games will not work on your TV. (not system fault, its the TV). Read some other flaws in the PS3 also.

"
Thay are not killing for this system, thay fight and kill over system to sell on ebay to make a fast legal Buck. Do a search on ebay, there is/was 3300 PS3 systems on the auction. But going for 1k-1.5k instead of 3k like the last 2 days.

This makes me glad I didn't end up going with my friends to camp out ;x

Mariox, Sony has a monopoly on blu-ray though, since they created it and such, so if someone wants to make their movie on blu-ray they have to pay sony, so if anyone bought a PS3 for just blu-ray reasons they would still have to buy the blu-ray disc and that's profit for sony :P at least.. it would seem that way (I'm not entirely sure if it is that way but I think it is)

Not really, it's mainly do to the short supply. So people freaked out even more.

No are you that dumb? Despite seeing all this violence you're treating it like it's a positive thing. That's what's fucked up. Making it look as though it is the "system to die for" through violence will never be a positive. It's extremely negative, and all the money made just shows how fucked up Sony is.
On another note, people wonder why so many politicians have it out for gamers. Shit like this happens and we'll always be thought as the viloent deranged killers that they try and makes us out to be.

It might not be a GOOD thought process but there are those that do think such ways after seeing the kind of efforts people are taking to acquire such a thing. After all, who would dare do something so horrible as violent actions, theft, etc against another person unless the thing which required such actions was truly worth it. That might be one persons thought process and might push them to buying it to see if it is so great or not even to see.. just because they might BELIEVE it is that great from such actions. Most do try to look at violence and marvel at what would bring someone (or some people) to such actions and maybe even become set in some sort of beliefs. This might not be making much sense as I am tired.. hopefully someone can understand what I'm going toward.. I wish I could recall what my sociology teacher said about such.. bah.. there are often deeper things to many things these days.

People don't go to great lengths for glorified paperweights. People go to great lengths for cold hard cash.

The system isn't great, in this instance. Reselling it for 100-300% profit is great. It's not as though someone's going to shoot you so they can play a fucking game. Someone's going to shoot you to fill their bankroll. Sociology doesn't enter in to it. People want the first off the line because it's cold hard cash even though better than half of them barely work. Little suburbanite billy wants one and his parents will pay whatever the cost.

By your logic everyone thought the tickle me elmo was the bomb diggity, this was not the case .. it's called secondary market and for buzzworthy items it turns a better profit than the stock market. Sony underproduced to make fanboys clammer to the stores and bash one another's heads in so they could either have one or sell it for profit until a fully working model is put out or both if they lucked out on a fresh off the line sony product that actually managed to run.

It's a stunt and a smart one simply for publicity reasons for sony as a company. For gamer's it's 2 steps forward 3 back simply because some jerkoff in marketing had a slick idea to make the american kids go apeshit.

This isn't deep. It's stupid. It's unwarranted. It's ridiculous. It's Greed.

but it tends to work, isn't that sad?

and it's not a glorified paperweight.. it really is a damn super computer.. granted mostly for the cell processor but it's damn powerful of a system. Furthermore, blu-ray can hold far more than an HD-DVD or any other form so far. A Blu-Ray game, I could see, would be one full of such detail and great size (I'm talking an RPG that could feel far more like a real world than any yet seen or a sports game where every person in the stadium is unique etc..). I see that there's potential in the system and blu-ray, and it seems that the costs are the same as XBox 360's HD-DVD. I don't see why people think it as just a paperweight when it has potential and is a super computer :\ bah

How much is sony paying you? I'm completely serious, I'd like to know. Every one of your posts turns into an advertisement which has no bearing whatsoever on the discussion.
