First it destroys four of my games, then I find that many of my download video files are corrupted, and now I find that my drive is dead.

I don't think I'll be messing with Microsoft console systems anymore.

Sounds like some user error to me. I know the first problems you listed are.

Wrong. The system hasn't been moved or tampered with in any way. The system has been used 100% properly. Video files have been paid for, downloaded, and watched and one day they don't play. Games become cracked in the center and have major scratches. Today the drive stopped working altogether.

I've built many computers and owned dozens of console systems. This is the only one I've ever had these ridiculous problems with.

Some discs get scratched cause of movement while they're in the drive. However there are also some faulty drives that kill discs regardless. He could have had the latter. I like my 360 and all but I think we're past the whole user-error is responsible for its faults phase.

Once it destroyed the first two, wouldn't you stop?

Discs are cracked in the center? That's from just pulling the discs out of their cases, instead of lifting them out when you press the center thing that holds them in place. The video thing sucks, and i know how you feel about the drive dying. My drive just died recently, but i've had it since launch so i wasn't too bummed about upgrading to an elite for free.

yep ive had a couple games turn up with the center cracked recently, and so has my friend, and as makelith said its from how we were pulling the games out of the cases, we wouldnt notice until taking the game out of the console so at first i thought it was the console doing it, then i found out it was me. I lose halo 3 and ninja gaiden 2 to that.
As for the videos.
1. are you playing them in the same console you downloaded them on, or are you downloading them, then putting the HD into another xbox and trying to play them, this wont work because of the way xbox signs its downloads, it will only play on the original console it was downloaded on, just like all other files downloaded from xbl.

2. are they rented movies? because those expire after your first full watch and or the expiration date. any paid for video on XBL that i have seen, does expire.

3 drive is dead? dont wanna mess with MS? no prob, Ebay. get a new drive of the SAME model and number, take the PCB board off the old drive, and replace the one on the new drive with the old one, pop it in your xbox and go. I just had to do this because i broke my old drive when i took it apart lol

Yeah, I have some cases that are ridiculously hard to get the games out of. The center buttons don't move at all and I try to take the discs out as gentle as possible.

My 360 is ok..

My Drive died while playing CoD4 months ago and took CoD4 with it. Made a horrible chainsaw sound. I got my replacement and sold my 360 afterwards. I've gone months without one now, but next month ill be buying the Elite.

I thought you could use downloaded XBL files on another Xbox, as long as you were signed in to XBL on the owner tag.

360's game cases combined with the materials the disc itself is constructed of (360 games are made of slightly lower quality materials supposedly) can occasionally lead to the discs forming microscopic fractures on the inner ring which spread outward when exposed to heat and rotation in the drive. It doesn't require user error.

I'm sending back my brand new copy of FFXI soon because this happened to it. This is the first time since I've first laid eyes on optical media that I've ever seen a problem like this even come up. I'm going to be keeping my games in a CD folder from now on, but it's an inconvenient thing to find out.

you can do that if your signed in, but 90% of the time the reason you download from one xbox and move to another is because the other doesnt use xbl. there is that resigning program online now to resign stuff to a single xbox so it looks as if it were downloaded there (i had to do this when i got an elite because some of my arcade games wouldnt work EVEN when signed in)
but you gotta be connected to live to do that too and you can only do it once ever 6 months to a year.

I own plenty of PS1, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, PS2, Wii, GameCube games and a few games from other system that use compact discs and have never had this issue.

The video corruption thing isn't that big of a deal. I just have to re-download the video. I just thought it was annoying and inconvenient that a video can randomly become corrupted.

It destroyed two Narutos, one FFXI, and one GTAIV. I only play Ikaruga on it now and I'm thinking about just leaving that alone since I have it on Dreamcast but I like being able to see my name on the high score list.

Okay. Where do I go to get a new drive for this thing?

ebay is your best bet, youll want to make sure what your current drive is before replacing it because the only way youll be able to replace the drive is if its the EXACT same make and model number (mine has a hitachi 47DJ that i replaced with a drive of the exact same number and make, this way all you gotta do is exchange the PCB board from the bottom of your old drive to the new one without having to do any tough technical work and just drop it in your xbox!)

I was looking at a tutorial on how to disassemble the system and got down to the screws and noticed I need a special screwdriver. I'll have to go get that before I can see what my drive is.
