LiLboyblue i know him........ hes good.I think races dont really make a very big difference cuz ffxi gave an option for u to switch jobs at anytime but changing races is not possible. And some tarus heal slower than an evlaan rdm so..... races dun make a very big difference all the time.

I don't think I've ever seen a Taru Monk played before, wonder what they look like when they do the punch, punch, kick.

OMG, Tarutaru Monks are the BOMB!!!! ... They dance like Muhammad Ali. They are soooo cool!!!!!

So sorry I'm double posting, but I have to say something about Tarutaru pld's now. Jacana is a kickass pld, (don't know if any of you know Jacana and Suchimimi) and our own Firestreak ain't too shabby either^^. And, although he gave it up Devi did a pretty good job on his pld also.

YAY! Someone finally had an original non-flame..and such with such polite presentation. I simply cannot begin to express my delight regarding the fact that someone finally brought up the race/job issues in this game. ESPECIALLY regarding mage jobs.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

:)

You know...when I started playing this game...I FIRST created a fake character (knowing sooo much about it) and THEN ran around all of the servers I could (yup..was soo uber I even ran these naked lvl 1 characters to Jeuno) JUST to make sure that I picked something that EVERYONE ELSE HAD. I just loooove fitting in and looking like everyone else.

Once I realized I HAD to be a RDM (so I could melee and cast magic and be uber)...I just fell in LOVE with the bagpipes of Sandy..naturally at that point I had no choice but to be Elvaan. Being a girl and wanting to exploit all of the free things I could get by exploiting this fact, I decided to pick the female Elvaan character that seemed most common, to increse the possibility that other players would confuse me with people they already know and, again, give me their stuff.

Unfortunately, the plan backfired. Since I look like everyone else, no one ever remembers me...I suck at my job because I chose the wong race..and now Vang hates me. I've flirted like mad to get free stuff, but it didn't work. I havn't waved my sword at anything in a party for months...so depressing. And now, after reading this thread, I realize how gimped I am.

I only hope others read this...to stop the madness.

Please..for God's sake..make it stop.

I'm begging.

I'm on my knees.

Hmm....

While I'm down here...Jender? C'mere

of course back a year ago I had no idea how hard a rdm is ; ;
but I love it^^

i saw this post and decided not to bother, but after seeing some of the replies i think i will. i don't really have anything to add that hasn't already been said, though.
i chose elvaan because i like elvaan. i can identify with that race easier than i can any of the other.
i chose blm for about the same reason.

and as far as the whole galkan mage thing goes, i'm aware (thought i don't personally know) of a galka with 3 mage jobs at 75. you have to be doing something right to do that. i once read somewhere... allakazham forums maybe... that to play a race that wasn't fit for the job required more skill to be on par with the rest. you have to be good, or you'll never get anywhere.

last night, i was in a canon party in dragon's ayrie(sp?), made of blms. just looking at numbers alone, i wasn't falling behind by any means, i had the mp for chain (normal exp party as well), and it was certainly nice to have the hp when the mob turned my way.

funny to watch one of the taru's take a crit and go straight to the red. i recieved a tell from the only other non-taru in the party, a mithra, after that. she was so thankfull she hadn't chosen taru when she started, she said. couldn't stand the way they run.
it's all about preference.

i guess i had more to add than i thought.

I've always liked being the underdog in games, course when I first made my character I didnt expect to have such a huge handicap on MP. I had even considered making a new main character, but then I hit 41 and everything changed, mainly cause I got invites just for being a RDM. Most people didnt care about my race, just so long as that Refresh cycle stayed up, the mob was enfeebled, and they see that MB every now and then.

But I dont go into this game with a "I'm the only RDM here, they'll have to invite me" attitude, I've always tried to get the best items, eat the best food, and be the best RDM I can be, and nobody has complained or said anything spiteful yet. I've only had one person complain about me being a Galka mage, but that was in Valkurm, and he was a moron and a fellow Galka to boot.

I've liked Galka RDM from the start. I'm also thinking off trying BRD out to see how that turns out, but thats on the back burner right now, I'm having ng too much fun being a RDM^^.

Any race can excel at any job. I am convinced of this.
It's not a handicap, it's a challenge.

When I started out I was a elvaan warrior. I knew nothing about the game, and no did during the NA PC release, so i played for a bit, but then I didn't like my hair color, or my name.

So I made a tarutaru mage, well mage's arent my bag of tricks.

So then I learned that Hume's are the best race, because of there versitlity (SP?). So I became a hume whm, I was still a noob, somehow got to lv30. Thank you someone gave me a reality check, then I become a Hume Sam. And I fucking love it. 8)

I love being hume THF but I despise my face look... and at the time I thought my spiky-in-the-front-flat-around was cool at first... wish it was black now =\

i have noticed almost all the people i have pt'd with
where their race didnt complement their job fully
actually performed better than the usual crowd

i guess cause its more challenge to play effectively
they give a damn

hehe I love this thread.

I knew I wanted to be a BLM when I started this game. But yet I didn't pick a taru. Well first reason is I didn't fully do my research and I did like the fact that humes are flexible for jobs. The other reason is that I simply liked the way my character looked. Do I regret not picking a taru? Every once in a while I get mp envy. But other than that no. I like knowing that when I need a break from a mage job that my character can easily adapt to melee. In fact I think I want to try out MNK sometime. I just love their cool ass moves.

so there's my 2 cents ^^

I'm not saying it's wrong to not play the ideal race for your job but here is my 2 gil on the subject.

The only time I really find having non-optimal race can really hinder a parties performance is when they are main healer. I party with Palum all the time (BLM) and nobody asks him if he's ready for another mob, but always ask me (SMN, Main healer most of the time). Chains are entirely dependant on the fact that the WHM/SMN/RDM has to have enough MP at the end of the battle to keep the party alive for another round. Granted if I"m low on MP me and Palum have a system where I rest up and he main heals for a bit, but this is only with Palum though and not your common BLM. I've played in parties with Taru WHMs and Galka WHMs and while the Galka was definately a great player he just couldn't keep up and I ended up main healing for the most part.

People say you can overcome this with great gear but the thing is a Taru WHM with the same gear is going to be better (Not skill wise...thats completely up to the player) so you really can't ever compinsate for your race's handicap with gear. The people with the optimum race should be wearing/using the same things you are anyway.

Skill is a big factor but when you are out of mp, you are out of mp. With the new NIN tanking thing I suppose a Galka WHM wouldn't be so bad but it'd be pretty hard to keep a PLD tank alive and still get great chains.

Once again I'm not saying it's completely wrong to play the wrong race for your class. Some people play the wrong race better than people with the best race but it is something to consider.

:D

well also its not the race u r but its also the way u play it, if u play ur character and job well then that kind of makes up for the lack of stats compared to some other races.

If you play a whm as a galka but u play it as well as possibe, curing when u need to and resting heck of a lot, it makes up for the lack of the stats the galka faces compared to a taru.

just my views :)

Everyone's probably said the same thing (if not, shame on you >P)
So here's my backing up what's already been said -
Some people chose a race based on what they thought would be fun. They chose a class based on what they thought may be fun. Or perhaps they wanted a challenge. Or they thought that (x) race in (x) armor would look really cool.....in the end, people did what they liked. I'm a Mithra whm, which, for a short time, was actually sortof uncommon. Not that it is now, thank god, so I look sortof unique, but not very.. ;-;

But again, it's preference XD

When I started the game, I had no concept of what race has what stats, or what would be the ideal race/job combo. I created my character to be a simulacrum of my favorite character from a tabletop RPG. The Elvaan toon I picked looks just like the character (though hair color is a little different, but the only choices were black or white) and the job, RDM, is closest to the Swordmaster job of my original character- more in the look of the AF than stats, heh.

By the time I got my subjob, I'd done enough research onlline to know I would need to take some steps to make up for my character's shortcomings. And I have- I quested my full RSE, I leveled my cooking exclusively so I could make all those uber foods that people rarely use (side note- Marron Glace kicks ASS) and I did my best to get great gear in every slot. Not since my days in the Jungle (i.e. pre-RSE) have I had problems with MP, or resists on debuffs.

When my husband made his character, a short time after I'd been established in the game, he knew he wanted to be a BLM. Destructive magic has been his favorite in every game he's ever played. However, he HATED the look of the Taru. Absolutely despised it. For a full week prior to his getting the game, all I heard was him bitching about how he hated being "cornered" into becoming a Taru for the best stats. He liked the Elvaan look best- he's had a thing for elves since Tolkien- but they made "crappy" BLM's. Or at least, so everyone on the FF Messageboards said. It took me a good 3 days for me to convince him to do what he really wanted, and go Elvaan BLM- and most of those 3 days were spent looking up all the Elvaan RSE that he could use to boost his stats, heh.

He's now a level 52 BLM, and kicks ass. I'll admit- if a Taru came along with all the good gear that Osse has, it's be a tough competition. But it would still be close. We have another BLM in our link- a level 64 Taru with good gear, and a real number-cruncher too, likes to have the best of everything. He's continually impressed at how well Osse does despite having a "gimped" race, and has told us repeatedly that there's little to no difference in the damage output between the two of them, when they were at comparable levels.
