wanted to chime in on this one ... first off, onu absofrigginlutely rules. I ptd with him in kuftal and decided after that i'd be lvling all my mages. Secondly, i've seen both ends of the galka mage spectrum, personally i get nothing but compliments on how well i do and so on; however i had the occasion to pt with jer while he was lvling blm in yuhtunga and was distrubed to see a "stop picking on me asshole" comment in his bazaar, this is a sad thing to see for a galkan mage. I had sense enough to grab 2 astrals when i could, spoil myself with the best whm eq i could, don't buff anything but mnd and mp, lvld cooking to 71 before i took it all up, etc. but i prepared for an uphill battle for a reason.
Most people don't understand that alot of us don't want to take the easy road and do something out of the norm. Too many people play out of a guide and wont do anything outside what the guide says. I figure if i wanted to play out of a guide i'd read a book and save myself a monthly fee of around $15.00

Mad props to jer, onu, taru plds/DDs, elvaan anythings ;), and mithra like ... iono whatever they suck at

Break the mold! have some fun! it's a bloody game for crap's sake

Well Phraust...why didn't you go Mithra? XD
.

Im not positive, but I think he just may be a mithra....

Phraust = Hume

To elaborate further, Phraust = my character (see below). He's my twin^^.

I'm gonna say this here cuz I think it sorta fits. I won't go into all the details but the lower level whm's need to at LEAST get their damn Barfira, Regen, Barsleepra, all their Protectra's, yada yada. I am so sick of hearing I don't have that spell yet. Granted, I was gimped when leveling for quite a long time without Erase, but that was the ONLY spell I waited on. We've done the discussion about Erase so let's pleassssse not start it again.

Another thing, if you're a whm, you are NOT God. Please remember one thing, without your melee's, you will not level, bottom line. So please start treating them better.

If you feel I've highjacked this thread and gone off topic too much, I do apologize.

I have found, in all of my great and mighty 50-some odds levels of experience that the so-called "bad" race/job combination players are better but here's my own reasoning i worked out. the accepted job/race combintaion people are secure in their standing as not having issues with their job, they get lazy and cheap. i know from experience. i do a bcnm 40 with an elvaan blm and i use about half the crap they do because, hell, i'm a freakin taru, i have my bloody int and mp, i don't need half the crap they do... but then a little voice in my head says... "yeah, but what if you DID use as much crap as he did? what if you weren't so secure in your ideal race/job combo, maybe you shold be as concience of your stuff as they are, stop settling for melon juice and use vampire, don't buy the cheap ring, buy the freakin +1... "
Most of these "paradox" players are only beter becase they are more than aware of their own racial failings and OVER-compensate to a pleasant degree... i partied with a taru SAM who used shogun riceballs in party... i have never seen comparable sam out there, though asiamise gives him a run for his money <3 .... if the people in ideal jobs put THAT much effort (and gil) into their jobs, or at least as much as the racially handicapped... hell, we'd be beyond compare... but... i'ma cutely chubby taru, be damned the day i use vampire juices in a bcnm40... i stick to me yag drinks thank you...

If you ask me, it's less about race/job combos. As has been said any job/race combo can eventually hit 75. Taking into account skill, wealth, friends and statics, and such it's simply very possible, if only a bit tougher/challenging for some cases.

But how about those damn job/subjob combos! I can not state how many times such has grinded my nerves! And I'm not talking about dunes crap like whm/drk or war/whm. It's not as common as for example a galka blm since it normally corrects itself, but damn some people don't take a hint. The cookie cutter freedom excuse is mute, most people use the same job/subjob combo beacause it WORKS THE BEST.

A while ago while leveling rdm in crawler's nest I came across a smn/blm claiming to be DD. Of course the rest of the party was great, and we actually did get nice xp with basically 5 people and a war tank. I was really expecting them to ditch him... but we didn't. Be the nice guy I am, I tried to correct the problem, having leveled smn to 70 and god damn well knowing among a smn's task % healing is 80%. Well he told me I didn't know shit, and I was labled a jackass among the pt because I had a problem with someone elses' job choice. I labeled them noobs and left, but the point is I see crap like this slowly more often. Samurai/drk, as someone mentioned somewhere rdm/ninja. Rng/war, yes some of these are ok but you are really missing a lot from better job choices, improving your invites and helping the pt overall. Drk/rdm has to be fun too...or drg/whm. Yes they work. Your level 1 rse works too. Is it better then AF at 60? Hell no. Why do a lot of people wear AF? Because it's frikin good. Ok.. sorry for getting off topic, this has just slowly pissing me off latly as I leave the safe heavens of high leveling xping and for once again in a long time delve into the lower levels.

This post has won the oficial Dire seal of aproval, what is said may not be the absolute truth but it is damn near close.

If you level a job past 30.30 because then you have a good partying concept in hand. So you know how to handle party's with even your "bad" race. So why would it matter as long as you can do your job just fine?

my char is elvaan. when i first started the game, i didnt look into the future as far as what my future jobs were gonna be and i also didnt know what traits helped what jobs. so reading the manual, i decided to go with elvan because it said that they are a good fighter class or something along those lines. i then looked at rdm and it said that it mixed magic with sword fighting.
if i had known that i was going to veer off into doing pld and ranger or even sticking with rdm, i would have chosen different. with what i know now, i definately would have gone with taru along with my rdm job that i started with.
point is, when people start the game,. most dont know the way things are preferred by most people in game. therefore, you have these people with uncommon races playing uncommon jobs.
also, could be that people have all jobs started or finished or whatever and move onto the next job. i have seen quite a few galkas(jpn) players that have 70+ in just about every job including the mage jobs.

But in the case of a Elvaan or Galka, the Difference in stats that are relevant to the job are greatly offset. Well equiped Hume can have 800 MP at lvl 60, an Elvaan at the same level struggles to top out 600

Uh....if the Elvaan is a DIPSHIT. I'm level 48, and I have just about 600 MP with melon pie, and OVER 600 with Marron Glace.

Some of the best mages I know are Elvaan. You just have to know how to make up for the limitations in your race. If you decide to wear crap equip, then you suck, but so would a taru, or hume, wearing the same crap equip. I've partied with good Taru Melee, good Glaka Mages, and good Elvaan EVERYTHING. Race DOES NOT make as much difference as everyone thinks it does.

Kipsy I do not doubt that you have put the effort into your BLM job but a properly equiped taru is retarded, you just never see a properly equiped Taru.

What the hell are you trying to say? No, seriously, I read that like, 12 times and I have no idea what you're trying to get across...

Ok my bad if that did not come across clearly. Tarutarus have a distinct advantage by having a signifigantly higher amount of MP and more importantly INT then other races. More often then not they get lazy because of this and don't bother with things like Morion earings or HQ Elemental Staves. Or even the HQ of things in general like Black Cape +1s and the like.

Its like Galkan monks, if they are properly equiped the other races can not compete with them.

Yep, and I have 2 sets of BLM gear. INT, and MP. I hotswap them during XP parties. But...either way, it all comes down to the player. If you're a bad player, no amount of racial bonuses or good gear will help you.

Oh thats true the player and the gear make the job not the race. Just saying, can the same player with the same gear do more damage on a more "suitable" race? The answer IMO is yes and a noticable difrence at that.

Ah, yes. But, when does this happen!? Out of the 2700some people on Quetzy, I'd say 90% are jackasses. (and I'm being generous, my perception of jackasses IRL is more like 97%)

So, yes, would I make a better BLM if I were a taru? Sure.

Would I be able to take as many hits when I inevitably lost hate to some dumbass PLD, NIN, or WAR?

Nope.

Would I look as sexy while BLMing?

Fuck no.

I stand by my race choice, and I'll continue to level whatever the bloody fuck I feel like leveling. Regardless if I'm "Suited" for it or not.

Good we need people who actualy care about their fucken jobs instead of the stupid pieces of shit I haev been partying with lately.

Well that is not true, as the whole thread has made great leaps to get across, but I know what you mean.

If everyone uses the same stuff, plays the same way, has the same gear, then your only differences are going to be shown in the chosen race. Since, in this particular instance we have moved onto BLM, a naked Elvaan and a naked Taru will perform differently. The biggest difference will obviously be the MP pool, this difference will be exactly the same as though they were naked, if they are both wearing the exact same equipment. :?

I would kill for a stat generator, you know where you enter the job, subjob and race and it gives you the base stats.

I was taru, I had astral rings, a phantom and morion earring, dark, ice, fire staffs. I can't remember which were HQ. Used my AF. Belt, back i forget. Necklace was... lol uhmmm yar.

Well anyway. I was a gimp sure I don't care. But I bought what I could afford on my income. No Vcloak, or serket, or +1 earrings or whatever expensive belt. But I surely didn't not-spend money because I thought just because I'm a taru, I don't need this piece.

I would of had all the elite gear if I were to kept on playing, I finally found a way to make money, but then I lost my passion for the game ect.

But whatever. Just please don't say that just because our race is made for being a mage, that we're lazy when it comes to the equip we have.

A prime example is Odon. He was taru BLM. I can't really describe him well. He was a tricky little bastard i'll give him that. But I know he had mostly HQ pieces. HQ staffs. He once threw out a pluto's staff by accident and had another by acouple days later. He was surely not a lazy taru BLM.

No I am not saying all, just a dispraportional amount of terribale BLMs I haev seen haev been Taru, same holds true with WHMs, alot of WHMs I know, the taru ones at least are wearing sintly rings, justice badge, red cape or just white cape and have no earings.
