I was curious on if a Red Mage can have a strong nuking set. I see a lot of +Magic Atk gear for them, but I wanted to know if it's worth pursuing. I do believe I have seen a Rdm deal nearly 700 damage for a Blizz 3 , but I forgot the combination of gear that was being used. So now I ask if anyone has any experience using a Rdm for solely nuking and what gear is used.

Thank you in advance.

I don't use my RDM for nuking a lot, but its still good to have a functional set. Magic attack should be your lowest priority, though. Magic attack will increase your damage, sure, but it does nothing to ensure you dont' get resists.

You need to make sure you have appropriate elemental skill/magic accuracy and intelligence, as those things can impact your resist rate. Its much better to nuke for 650 consistantly than to nuke for 700 25% of the time, but for 350 the other 75%.

I'm at work right now, and I don't remember what my skill/accuracy/INT is in my nuke set. I'll try to post it later.

The order should be like this for the most part:

Ele. Skill > INT > M.Acc > M.A.B.

Mine is no where near complete or even that great for that matter because I still get resisted a lot. But this is what I currently use: http://www.ffxiah.com/item_sets.php?id=26682

I would like to get AF2 feet, Mahatma body, Merciful Cape, maybe a Elemental Earring, Morrigan's Legs, and some other stuff. But RDMs can nuke pretty well from 500-800 considering what you are fighting.

Your gear isn't too different than mine. Going from memory, I've listed it below, and bolded the differences. I prefer Genie Gages on the hands because the skill > MAB from Zenith, though I can see where a race that has less MP than Taru would favor those. I don't get very many resists, even on resistant normal mobs like the statues at Ulli camp.

Prism Cape
Duelist's Tights
Goliard Clogs
Witch Sash
Genie Gages
Aquilo's Staff
Bugard Leather Strap +1
Phantom Tathlum
Warlock's Chapeau +1
Elemental Torque
Moldavite Earring
Errant Houppelande
Phantom Earring +1
Tamas Ring
Omega Ring

Edit: Also, if you go balls out with skill, you can see deminishing results. INT is very important, too. For example, a Glamor Jupon gives you +skill, but an errant body is still better because 10INT > 3 skill.

Edit again: Apparently I don't know what I wear on my feet or legs. Added up all the correct stuff.

+41 INT
+35 Skill
+7 MAC
+5 MAB

Yeah, I'm working on Omega Ring. Been considering Genie Gages, but I like the MP. Want Chap +1 but not doing Limbus. And have other things to get before I start saving up for a Witch Sash.

I don't know if you have fully merited Elemental Magic Skill, but I haven't finished doing it yet so that could be the reason why I get more resists than you.

also dont bother with macc for nukes generally speaking there's usually a better int slot for the spot you're wondering with macc for.

but i follow the same format of ele> int > mab; since our skill is low we have to compensate for it once we break the general area we can focus more on int to increase the base damage and finally where int is low and there is a bigger advantage to be gained with mab we use mab.

my nukes on something like dynamis mobs land for the 450~600ish at with just int gear but I've seen stronger(int+48 i think?)

also JP errant or relic feet are better but yigit is best in that feet slot

Merciful Cape | Einherjar Cape (don't remember the name, sorry)
Morrigan's Slops
Morrigan's Pigaches
Witch Sash
Morrigan's Hands
Aquilo's Staff
Bugard Leather Strap +1
Phantom Tathlum
Warlock's Chapeau +1
Elemental Torque
Moldavite Earring
Errant Houppelande

I'd say it depends on the situation. this set gives:

49 INT
25 magic skill
5 m. acc
5 m. att

I would, however, use the INT+5 cape from Einherjar over Prism Cape for +50 INT instead, or the merciful cape for 30 magic skill but +45 INT instead.

There's a second set to use too:

Merciful Cape | Einherjar Cape (sorry, don't remember the name)
Morrigan's Slops
Morrigan's Pigaches
Witch sash
Morrigan's Gloves
ele staves +1
Bugard Leather Strap +1
Phantom Tathlum
Morrigan's Coronal
Elemental Torque
Moldavite Earring
Phantom Earring +1
Morrigan's Robe
Tamas Ring
Omega Ring

This set gives:

40 INT
12 magic skill
15 magic accuracy
20 m. att

which translates to roughly, assuming merciful rather then einherjar cape:

9 less INT
3 less skill
15 more m. att

Or, assuming your INT is over enemy INT, 12 less accuracy. But I would use INT cape instead then, which would mean 7 less accuracy and 4 less INT.

It all depends on the situation. If your acc is good, the second set is better, but if you're lacking accuracy, then the first one is better.

I agree completely.

49 INT
25 magic skill
5 m. acc
5 m. att
Thanks for taking the time to put that together. I appreciate it when other people do things so I can just be lazy and not do it myself later.

I have a Gleeman's cape, but I just can't afford the extra slot to keep Gleeman's and Aslan, and I have to have both INT and MND.

I do have a Merciful cape, and I tested with it, but I noticed that it didn't really impact my resist rate (on Aura statues and on puddings, I tested both), however it did lower my per nuke damage a little bit.

There's a second set to use too:

Morrigan's gear is nice, no doubt. My Nyzul Isle group has talked about doing Salvage after we've finished getting people the boss drops they want from Nyzul Isle, and I hope we can, I just don't have any room to fit it in right now. =/

The key though is knowing what you're fighting. Some mobs are more resistant than others, some are weak to magic. A lot of RDM (and BLM, for that matter) tend to make the mistake of thinking that MAB is what they should focus on when, in most cases, it isn't, at least not solely.

Personally I'm just lazy and use my morrigan for most situations (I rarely do events that requires me nuking in accuracy gear, though), but if I wasn't lazy I'd get both.

The best all-around set for nuking would be the one mentioned earlier though I'd guess. Morrigan is mostly for situations in which you don't get resisted a lot, but it is superior in that situation. And Morrigan is harder to get as well.

wouldn't af2 legs be better for resists?

If you get resists :

head : AF+1
body : Shadow coat(+1) > errant body(+1) or chasuble/nashira depending on you total int. If tha target has very high INT, magic accuracy will perform better.
Hands : Genie > morrigan
legs : AF2 > morrigan > errant(+1)
feet : nashira

If no resist full morrigan is better but this is nice also :

AF1 head
Errant body
morrigan hands
morrigan legs/errant
AF2

wouldn't af2 legs be better for resists?

It depends. Morrigan Slops > Errant's Slops if you can get it (would make the first set of combined equip even better as well). In a situation where you get resisted a lot, then it (AF2 legs) might be better depending on how much you get resisted. Generally in situations where RDM actually nuke, the mob won't be resistant enough that you have to stack up full-time on magic accuracy anyway. Morrigan Slops would give something like 5 accuracy unless your INT is high enough that INT equals roughly 1 accuracy.

I dunno why I said AF2 when I meant Yigit. Whatever lol.

You can have 300+ skill and still see resists if you have gimp INT.

Also, I prefer Goliard feet over Yigit. I nuke in Goliard, amended my previous post.

heh i have neither my af feet still work

i dont do a lot of endgame where I'm blasting resistant shit so I dont have my ele skill aside from af hat, torque, relic legs, usually i'm in int gear

if i had to chose feet though i'd go yigit, cant really go wrong there macc is such a vague variable I dont rely on it

for my nuking i use:

main:NQ staff that goes with spell
sub:strap that goes with spell
head:warlock
body:yigit
hands:yigit
ring1:omega
ring2:balhran
ear1:phantom
ear2:moldavite
back:rainbow
waist:penitent
legs:jet serraweels
feet:dualist

readin these posts making me think of some changes maybe:

body: yigit replace for errant?
legs: jet seraweels for dualist?
feet: dualist for yigit?

keeping in mind i have +16 ele skill from merits should i make these changes?
and ya i do some endgame stuff like dynamis, sky, Znm , ANNM, and BCNM from the past.

Bolded is the most important part. You need to repace first NQ staves by HQ, not only because it's more damage but also less resists. With HQ staff it will be hard to get resist on anyhting around VT or less. So assuming you have the HQ staves (ice and thunder only are necessary) :

errant will always outdo yigit
duelist will always outdo yigit
As for the leg the best from AH are mahatma, so get them ; lol crafters are happy to make 10k profit on them.

If you nuke more resistant stuff (IT+, dynamis demon NMs) you should put skill everywhere, like duelist legs etc.

Just for clarification, what you can nuke without using elemental skill build on rdm are, to my experience :

- puddings
- lower tier sea jailer (ix'drk drg mnk fortitude etc)
- anyhting in salvage except maybe the boss
- anything in limbus except some boss
- nothing in Einherjar (they tend to resist blm..)
- anything ENM-like

this is assuming elemental skill merited.

If you're nuking higher lvl mobs try to get your elemental skill over 260. I saw big bonuses when fighting ix'drk when I got to about 255+ ele skill.
