Exactly why they do not allow you to see the map. When you get an Eliminate Leader(And to a lesser extent Specified Enemies) objective, Widescan would cut down on the time spent on that floor tremendously.

Can't they just remove widescan? I mean if they can put pathos on pretty much anything, why not get a permanent one for widescan so we can use the maps? I mean a majority of the time wasted on floors is all because of getting lost more than anything. Access to maps would actually make it a lot easier and far more enjoyable than running around blind all the time.

There are two subobjectives with the Gears. Do not destroy, and Avoid detection. Avoiding is fucking hard since they're true sound and aggro magic casting, but allegedly, if you pull them with a ranged attack, it doesn't count as being detected.

I've never had a problem avoiding detection on those. They are true sight and sound, but the agro range seems to be pretty small and I can get around them in the small corridors just fine.

Yeah, they CAN remove widescan without killing the map, and they do with several Assault missions.

And just curious..."avoid gears, but don't destroy them"? So you pull them with ranged attack and sleep or, or let them wail on you the entire floor? Or is it only one of the two choices you hafto follow?

No, they're two seperate sub-objectives. Don't destroy, they can aggro, but you can't kill them. Avoid detection, you have to never get aggro from them, or you get penalized. However, if they do aggro when you're objective is to avoid them, you can destroy them with no additional penalty.

Map without Widescan would be pointless. The way the maps are set ups is that theres only a handful of maps, but the rooms you have access to are randomly generated with the open/closed untargetable gates. Allowing players to view the map of the entire area is just a waste. Where as with Widescan, you can see which rooms are open because they would be populated.

Yeah, when they're in big rooms, they're easy to avoid. But when they're in stair wells, or the rooms with the zig-zag walls, it's pretty rough.

Quick question, I didn't see a direct answer to ... can you gain/lose EXP in this?

It's like any other assault, you can lose experience when you die, but killing mobs result in experience gains as well. You should make a little experience on each run and dieing with a decent group shouldn't be an issue. Most normal mobs are DC range, the "kill specific enemies" objective mobs are no tougher than normal exp mobs, and "kill enemy leader" is a fairly tough NM.

Do you have to pay or trade anything to get them appraised?

Pay. Price varies for who you go to. 500 to the guy in Whitegate. 200 to the Qiqirn's in Al Zahbi and Nashmau. Ofcourse, Nashmau is actually more than the 200 it costs, because you either spend IS or Gil getting there, and the one in Al Zahbi can be captured from Besieged.

there a rumor that they give better items though

I highlighted the keypoint.

A rumour is just that, a rumour. There's nothing more to it. A rumour means its not proven. People believe it do. Doesn't mean it will.

The best I can think of is that they give a different "good" item (the good item being the rare/ex gear).

ffxicylopedia is reporting that the ???? ring drops from Behemoth has a %10 percent chance of becoming Anniversary Ring. Any thoughts? or confirmations?

may be it the defender ring:wink:

well the only way to prove a rumor is to test it, but every time I want to try test it that stupid little armadillo is missing.

It'd really be pretty unreasonable for ??? items' nature to be determined at the time of appraisal rather than at the time of creation. Both from a programming standpoint and from an attempt to apply real-world logic to game logic.

The latter argument is, of course, that it's some specific thing whether you've identified it or not. Only difference is that after identifying it, you know what it is, but it's still the same thing while it has its layer of dust on it or whatever.

As for the former, it's more efficient to make the chest determine the item from a small list specific to the source (i.e. ??? Sword chest from Assault A gives 40% sword 1, 35% sword 2, 20% sword 3, 5% sword 4, while ??? Sword chest from Assault B gives 50% sword 2, 40% sword 5, 10% sword 6). And then just stick the "what this item really is" into the ??? item as a hidden variable (like WS points on latent weapons, or kill count on that DRK quest sword). Then all the appraiser NPC's code would be would be "take item, see what its hidden variable says, and drop that into the treasure pool". Easy appraiser code, relatively easy item generation code.

The alternative would be to have the chest drop some item with a hidden variable saying where it came from (Assault A or Assault B, above), but then the appraiser NPC's code would be this big ugly mess that would have to handle every item source and calculate out all the odds at that time. Seeing as you'd have to put a hidden variable onto the item *anyway* (because it's confirmed that ??? items from specific sources can only identify into specific things based on the source), it'd be far easier to just make that hidden variable be what the thing actually is, and save yourself a step. Not to mention make your code more readable.

This is, of course, no guarantee that it actually *is* done logically (both in terms of real-world logic, and programming efficiency). It could very well be the other way around.

Personally I just think the Nashmau NPC is a little cheaper because it's all the way in Nashmau, and the Al Zahbi NPC is a little cheaper because he can be captured, whereas the Whitegate NPC is convenient and always present, and therefore has a higher fee to match. That strikes me as being more in line with the way S-E prices things.

It is a wiki so you are bound to get a lot of erroneous information. At the top of the page, you also get a message that the item has not been found in game yet which contradicts the Behemoth idea. I think it's kind of a wierd place to put it as well, I'd expect it to be in a place which would be more common for the item to be obtained like a quest or reward for some previous action. Plus there is also the importance of the name, Anniversary Ring, which implies it's the anniversary of something. Someone said it might be for the first anniversary of ToA release which is coming soon, April 18th for US and 20th for EU (not sure when JP was). If anything, I'd make a quick bet that it has something to do with that, but you never know, it might be as simple as the day you first joined FFXI too.

Edit:
POL service starting date: 05/16/2002
Japanese PS2 Release Date: 05/26/2002
Perhaps it's for the 5th anniverary of FFXI. If that's true, it could be awhile before it comes out and it's rather odd the ring is added now rather than in the next version update. Maybe the event starts early?

I don't believe it. They already have the benefit of saving you 300 gil.

I bet that's SE's master plan of stopping gil deflation.

Bumping. Curious of how far everyone has progressed in floors? Has anyone made it to floor 20? Or further? Wondering on the drop rate of the new armors and if they actually drop any ??? items as well.

According to Skaw, it's been confirmed that floor 20's NM drops feet, floor 40 legs. Floor 60 is hands, 80 hat, 100 body. It's also said that they all only drop one ??? item, which would mean there's a 1:3 chance of it being the piece you're after.

The Goliard Hat/Body look very nice, shame that it'd take so long to get just one. =/

I am curious, I have done the floor 20 HNM twice now with no drop. Is it a chest that appears or a drop from the mob? And does TH have any effect? What about the rumors of other ??? dropping as well or were they just unfounded rumors?

Edit: What about floor 100? If you progress from 99 to 100, you lose the save data from 96 according to wiki and I assume that means all data from 1 to 100, but what's the point in that? You can farm 20, 40, 60 and 80 indefinitely until you get what you need from those floors, but 100 is different? I mean it's not as if the head armors are exceptionally superior to the rest of the set other than it completes the set for the bonus effect to kick in, so is there perhaps something special about it beyond just that or am I missing something?
