The Defense Department twice asked President Barack Obama for permission to use military force to rescue Phillips, most recently late Friday evening, U.S. officials said. On Saturday morning, Obama signed off on the Pentagon's request, as he had a day earlier, said the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.

So let me get this straight. One of our sailors on Wednesday is kidnapped by primitive savages and you don't sign off to rescue him until Saturday. Saturday? FOUR FUCKING DAYS LATER? Guess the captain now knows why no one bothered to rescue him on Friday when he jumped off the boat in a brave attempt to escape from these animals.

What's a matter Obama to busy shooting hoops to care you sack of shit. Reporters in a press conference ask you about the situation and your response is, "lets focus on housing people". Too bad it wasn't you being held captive because if I was the captain of that destroyer I would of turned around and went home.

YOU PIECE OF SHIT SOCIALIST DOUCHE BAG.... YOU ARE A PUSSY UNWILLING TO FIGHT TO DEFEND THE CITIZENS YOU SWORE TO PROTECT. I GUESS YOUR TOO BUSY BANKRUPTING THE COUNTRY FIRST TO CARE. ASSHOLE!!!

Posting in a potentially epic thread.

your point is valid, but you sure didn't get it across correctly.

as for him dodging questions in news conferences, it was the correct decision to make. if he had come right out and made a statement condemning the pirates it just would have boosted their morale even more, they might have just straight off killed the guy.

Called stratestic planning, not jumping and risking everything. You never just rush in a hostage situation.
I Know I Will sound like a dick for this but........... a captured captain isn't americas top priortiy. If you haven't noticed we are in a recession and we have to worry bout our economy, not rush and send millions of tax payers money for one person.
Our president is new and young, not all his decisions are going to be the best give the man some time. Stop judging him so hastely just cause our last president was a douche.

I agree with Tidy? When did that happen?

Of course the lefty pinko media in Canada aren't going to bother reporting about the Somalian pirates. They're too busy covering the "Obama finally picks the official white house dog story".

My understanding is these pirates are also holding about 200 people hostage, for ransom, from several other countries. Where's the outrage? At least the U.S. had the balls to shoot the assholes.... Too bad it took Barack Hussein Obama four fucking days to ok it.

I'm so ashamed this piece of trash is our president. He makes Jimmy Carter look like George Washington.

I havent heard or read too much of this, but if im understanding correctly (You didnt provide much substance in your post), Pirates took atleast one man hostage?

Now, im not too well informed with how we handle these situations but if i remember correctly, the US has a policy of not negotiating with terrorists, i remember when there were some Americans, think soldiers that were being held hostage in Iraq and we didnt really negotiate, its possible this applies to these situations as well. If this does fall under the category, then perhaps that policy is what you should be angry about.

Either way, its blatant ignorance to point the finger at Obama because i can guess the decision is not solely up to him, the country doesnt just do w.e he says whenever he commands it, going back on the only things u posted, you werent there, how do u know if he wasnt trying to approve earlier but had others in his way?

In hostage situations, your risking peoples lives to save others, so one has to see it from both sides, and your argument, stating if it were Obama there would be no question. Well of course not, hes the PRESIDENT. Sorry to say but if it were me or you, we wouldve gotten the same, slow, treatment.

And GoD, you dont sound like a dick, you are correct in what you're saying. America has priorities, it's like someone telling you to go and rescue a complete stranger, your not going to treat that the same as if you had to rescue your brother, people have priorities, and it sucks to say but "200 Hostages" throughout the world, many not american is a relatively small number for the U.S to go balls out and fix.

I'm not giving Obama a pass, but the real problem is the fucking European governments actually paying off these ransoms(unless I got my facts wrong). If nobody paid these fucks then they wouldn't keep doing this shit.

Funny, it was front page news of the paper I read today. Being an ignoramus isn't going to help your argument there buddy. I'd straight out tell you to screw off at this point but you hate cats, so I still like you.

I'm not going to flying into a frothing gung-ho fit over this, but it could be argued that Obama bungled the situation if he did, in fact, brush off the incident in favor of discussing domestic affairs.

I'm not disputing the relative importance of the issues in the grand scheme of things, mind you, but sometimes a president has to address issues he knows are technically less important because to do otherwise would look bad.

Probably a better response (assuming that the OP is being accurate in his accusation) would have been to mouth some polite bit of formula ("We're taking the situation very seriously, and exploring every available option, etc") rather than simply brushing it off.

And frankly, people get kidnapped every day. Including American citizens. People are held unjustly all over the world. We hold some of them. While this one particular person has the media spotlight, rest assured that there are quite a few who do not. Piracy in Somalia is a popular news story at the moment, and the pirates have become increasingly bold. It is, perhaps, time to address the situation.

The question, however, is how to go about doing so. We could send in a SEAL team, maybe reclaim the captain (though there's a fair chance he'd get killed during the rescue, particularly if they try it at sea). A politician, particularly one at the beginning of his term, especially a president, is going to hesitate when there's a chance that the rescue could backfire.

The government of the United States doesn't negotiate with terrorists, but corporations pay ransoms all the time. Sometimes, it's the safest, easiest way to get people back.

Oh noes! Our president hasn't been in office for three months yet and he's the worst president alive! I think we are forgetting that we just got out a mentally retarded president who did nothing for eight years. Then we only have Obama for two months and three weeks and people are complaining about how he's a "piece of shit." Last time I checked, things are not instant. At least give him a year before you start complaining.

And as others said, sometimes its best to wait shit out and not jump and do things without thought.

When asked about the pirates during a housing conference he replied "Guys,we're talking about housing " I dunno... seems like he's trying very hard to avoid any conflict...but at the expense of what? 1 American citizen?..I sure hope not...

I'm losing respect for him already...
Could care less about the empty promises cuz every president just about breaks em, but this.....

From what I've heard they've all been rescued though, Navy seals ftw.

There was only the one american citizen that has been held captive. The first one in a situation like that in nearly 2 decades. Guess what happened to the people who took them captive? 3/4 of them were killed. Pirates are going to be thinking twice before taking americans again. You do realize that if someone had just jumped the gun and made the recuse attempt that the person probably would have been shot? Russia and France have also been making active attempts to take down the pirates.

You need to take a few deep breaths Tom, before you make yourself look even more silly.

They rescued the guy after only a few days, and you're bitching about it because it didn't happen on your timetable? Wow. Glad you're not in charge of hostage situations or you'd go in with guns blazing and get everyone killed.

I thought it was too early for anyone not working for Fox News to be suffering from ODS (Obama Derangement Syndrome), but I was wrong.

BTW- I found the whole notion (as advanced by a few simpletons) that this was somehow a test of Obama to be laughably absurd. Our military budget is a half a trillion dollars a year. If we can not handle a couple pirates without the hands on involvement of the President, we need to just disband the Navy. Is it going to be a test of Obama every time some criminal somewhere takes a hostage?

Seriously.

All I have to say is, I know unlikely as it maybe, that none of you pro-Obama people or your family are ever in a hostage situation like this captain where your life is basically in his hands.

I wonder if you would still have an, "I'm just one man and Obama has an economy to worry about so I'm sure he'll give the order to rescue me when he gets around to it" attitude.

Bush was garbage but it doesn't justify him acting the same. 4 days to "ok" a kill order is 3 days, 23 hours and 59 minutes too long. Period.

Maybe he should worry less about hurting the pirates feelings and more about doing his god damn job. My beef is NOT that the SEALs didn't go in guns blazing. Last thing I want is for this brave captain, who volunteered to be a hostage to save his crew, to get hurt. My beef is it took him 4 FUCKING DAYS to "ok" snipers to take out the sons of bitches out.

I guess you can't expect anything less from least qualified president EVER hold the office.

So where was all this rage from Taliban/Al-Qaeda hostage incidents that didn't have kill orders issued within a second of being known?

let's see what other options the pirates have if they know noone is going to pay.
oh idk. how about kill everyone and take all the loot before running like hell? There's sure to be forms of ID with the crewmen so identity theft is a viable option during the first week if they can wire over the info. They don't NEED to keep people alive. Its just more profitable to keep em alive and ransom.

Of course, if they know they aren't going to get paid, they also aren't going to bother kidnapping people for ransoms they'll never get.

which brings up the kill them and take their shit option i pointed out. They don't HAVE to ransom you to make money or keep you alive. they can always just rob you like pirates has for centuries. Which is essentially what i just said. Do you REALLY think a ship full of people doesn't have anything of value? If these pirates used to live on say 30 bucks a year( Nigeria) jacking your wallet alone is a profitable venture. They have absolutely no incentive to leave any witnesses behind except when they can get paid ransom.
