Official 2009 Stanley Cup Playoff Thread

I didn't say the penalty was BS, I'm just supporting the lack of a suspension which is the usual case involved with those penalties now. Especially in the end of a game. And I said that one of the reasons was blatant, which justifies the penalty. Something I didn't say (and I checked) is that Malkin didn't deserve the penalty or instigate at all. And if 5 feet is traveling, well, sure. He went out of his way to get to Hank, but not out of his way in the sense that he was a good 15 feet away or any other distance that shows obvious headhunting.

I guess by rule, it should have been a suspension. I think the blame here though should be placed on the NHL rulebook, for having such a stupid rule in place. If you're gonna gear a rule towards "goons", whom this rule is obviously set for, you might as well put a disclaimer that it will only be enforced if your name is Goddard, Orr, Ruutu, or some others.

I'll be the first to say (even as a die-hard Pens fan) that Malkin should've got to watch Game 3 from the press box. It was stupid of him to tempt fate by starting something silly (after a ridiculous flop by Os-overrated) and even putting the idea of suspension in the heads of the committee.

Sadly, that's the NHL we live in today. Rules and penalties go out the window when the playoffs start, and by the finals it's basically a free-for-all. The Wings are smart, they know they can interfere and clutch and grab and all that and get away with it. The Pens, after 9 games over the last two years now, are finally catching wind of it. I think the Pens would have a much better chance in this series if Game 102 of the season was called exactly like Game 1, but that's just not how it works. It's sad, and the NHL buries their credibility each and every time one of these calls is missed, overlooked, or outright dismissed, as they have for much of the finals so far.

I'm going the opposite way of Tim - and I'm a die-hard wings fan!! I have no problem with Malkin, zero, zilch, nada! He's trying to fire up his team and at the same time put a hurtin and relieving frustration on one of the guys that blanketted he and Crosby.

I do have a problem with two things in the scrum however. The guy that speared Osgood to set off the melee should see a suspension. Using your stick as a weapon is not cool. Secondly, the guy (I think it was Staal) that was trying to grab at HZ while he was engaged with Malkin is classless, cowardly, and dangerous (this is how people get injured in hockey fights).

To sum up. No problems with Malkin (quite the opposite), but the other two be BASTAGES!!!!!!

Drapier and Datsyuk back tonight?

Something tells me they will be. I know they practiced but afaik its still "game time decision." And at least Al gets where I'm coming from, lol. I knew I couldn't be the only one out there. I don't know about rules completely going out the window, Tim. Or rather... "I don't think so, Tim." (Couldn't help it.) It seems like they just focus on the cheap examples of obstruction rather than the minor ones and let the guys play a little more than they normally would.

As far as sticking by the rules and stuff, I prefer seeing some things being held to league discretion instead of being automatic. When you're playing, sometimes things happen so fast and heat up quick that its not always just a black and white thing. It covers something everyone can be prone to do given the right circumstances but if you follow hockey, you know there's probably different reasoning behind it even just going by name. I really don't think the same things that would go through a Bertuzzi's or Tucker's head were going through Malkins here, lol.

All true, but I'm just asking for any form of consistency. In other pro sports for example, a hold in football is a hold all year, a foul in basketball is a foul, strike zones don't suddenly shrink in the World Series. I find it hard to believe that if these games were early in the season that there wouldn't be many more penalties, going both ways. I guess in the end, neither mine or your opinion change anything, but it's always fun to banter.

On a more current Hockey related note: FUCK YEAH PENS!!! Best of 3. This series just got real.

Least the Pens won that one without the help of the Refs. Looks like the Wings gonna win it in Pittsburgh again this year.

yep, have to believe you aud...that fighting sure does pump up a team...also gets you a 2 min penalty which gets them another goal behind GG. but i guess whoever did the swinging thought he was a leader as well?
great job by helm to not retaliate at all and to pull the one sided penalty.

edit: so in your eyes, i would be seeing nothing but leadership. looks like a whole lot of frustration to me. as tim has said, they need to be consistent with penalty calling. there are too many cases in the playoffs that so much gets away. regardless of who is committing the infraction, it needs to be called.

all in all. it looks like home ice has a huge advantage. if that is the case, looks like a 7 game series.

There is very little doubt in my mind that the Pens will take game 6. The problem is, they've scored two goals in three games at the Joe. They played solid in the first period tonight, and Cleary's goal was kind of back-breaking at that point, but 1-0 wasn't the end of the world. 20 minutes and 4 goals later, everything looked fucked. The inconsistency of penalty calls is still frustrating. Not saying I think anything is biased either way, I'd just like to see things called that -used- to be penalties until the finals. Both ways.

Zetterberg did do a pretty nice acting job on that Crosby whack though. 95 mph frozen rubber has no phase, but a swinging stick to those impenetrable shin guards must have hurt? Whatev.

a puck usually will not take a direct hit from a puck. when it hits, its usually a graze. now, if it is directly on the apex of the front of the shin pad, then yes, you will feel a puck. when a baseball swing to the shin is used, you will almost always feel that. regardless, its slashing. regardless of whether it hurt or not.
shin guards arent impenetrable. ive had mine crack from, i believe it was a wrist shot.
and yes, i do honestly think that pittsburgh will win the next game. but, if there is a game 7. pitt doesnt really have the odds on their side

This sets up my perfect Stanley Cup winning scenario for Detroit (well, not #1 perfect that would have been a sweep on this variation). Detroit winning in Pittsburgh in overtime on a Hossa hat trick goal.

Don't insist that the Wings are divers or else masterorion will tell you how you've never played hockey and that the Red Wings don't do anything wrong. And I'm done trying to prove any point to you. Like I said, people like Tim and Al get what I'm saying, so I know its not me thats not getting it. Can't really talk any sense into someone that says something like...

reason number 2 of 4 why the wings are better than the pens. pens got served.

Yes, what a great reason to explain why one team is better than another team. "Because they pwn." One team isn't necessarily better than another just because they lost. I played hockey! I know these things! /sarcasm. I'm done with you bro, lol.

Anywho, I'm hoping to see a game 7. But who knows. Last night was a good momentum stopper on the Pens. Hopefully a few of you guys out there know what I mean by the word momentum...

"Fighting" gives you 5 actually.

Love always,
Mr. forgets the actual point of the argument

really? no shit. i guess the rhodes scholar here didnt see the game and would realize it wasnt a fighting penalty. you fuckin dumb ass. the 2 punches that were thrown got him a roughing penalty. which, im sure that you already know, is 2 mins. im guessing you know all this already your the self-proclaimed genius of this thread? and what you say, goes. if it was an actual fighting call, he would have also gotten the instigator for that one too. since he was swinging at someone that was unwilling to fight. but obviously this wasnt seen as that serious of a "fight" to deem it a 5 min penalty.

perhaps you should take a look back and see what the whole discussion was about. because you have seriously gone off topic about it.
it was about malkin being frustrated at the end of game 2. you think its "showing leadership". then you turned it into "trying to pump up the team".
showing leadership is doing exactly what helm did and not retaliate and recieve a penalty for it. not only that, but pushing himself on both sides of offense and defense. you hear alot about malkin being huge offensively. how often do u hear about his hustle to get back and stop an odd man rush? not as much as most other players.
and as for pumping up a team. if your going to use fighting to pump up a team, the end of the game is the wrong time to do it. at that point it doesnt benefit his team, nor himself.
perhaps you should actually get in a hockey league, then come back to the sports section and start talking. because its obvious to me that you dont know much about what happens on the ice and how it really affects your team.

and as you so elegantly put it...since fighting gives a player 5 mins. and that since it is a major penalty, if malkin pulled that shit in the middle of the game, he would have definately costed them the game. det would have gotten what? maybe 2 goals out of it? im just guesstimating since they scored on just about all of the power plays in game 5.

p.s. i also follow lightning hockey. so if you insist that i do nothing but route for the wings...your wrong. i was there for the last time someone you may know as, fedytenko won the cup with TB...also, may i add, they are the last city to win a championship with a football team and a hockey team in the same year. unless, if pitt pulls it off this year.

tim didnt agree with the original statement that was made. he stated something that was obvious that you as well as everyone would agree with. so, stop with the "everyone gets it but you". thats not how this whole thing got started.

oh, and lets disect your "momentum". detroit had absolutely no momentum going into game 5. but they blew out pitt. they got their asses handed to them in game 4. what "momentum" could detroit possibly have going into game 5? the only type of momentum for either team right now is home ice. not who won the previous game. if either team had momentum at any point, detroit should have won game 3 or pitt should have won game 5.
but apparently, neither of those happened. so, where is this so called momentum?
and i will stand by my prediction of pitt winning game 6. i hope not, but with the way the games have been going, that is a good guess.

All I saw is "WOOOOOOSH." And self-proclaimed would imply that I referred to myself as a genius, which I didn't do. And by Tim "getting it," he understood what I meant even though he disagreed. There's more than one way to show leadership and one of the ways is indeed finding a way to light a fire under your team's asses when no one else is. Like I said, you're stuck in the one way that you think so its pretty pointless debating anything with you.

That was a neat trick changing the quote too. Forum creativity in its finest form.

Explains a lot. Seriously though, what does football have to do with any of this? I'm the one going off topic while you're spouting TB facts, lol. And you really do look like a #1 fan when you spell your guys' names wrong. Come on, man. At least try just a little.

oh my lord the grammar nazis never go away. god forbid i spell somethign wrong. "teh internets is teh serious business...cant spell anything wrong herez". get the fuck over yourself and stop nitpicking shit now.
and the problem, which you still failed to see is that what tim had posted afterwards had nothing to do with your argument at hand. we were going on with what constituted instigating and how fighting shows you as a good leader trying to pump up your team. not consistency of calling penalties.
and excuse me for a moment while i take a second to be mr literal.

There's more than one way to show leadership and one of the ways is indeed finding a way to light a fire under your team's asses when no one else is.
so, what your saying is that crosby wasnt being a leader during the game?

if you opened your eyes, i also agree with tim about calls not being made or what have you due to the playoffs. get a clue. im done going over something so trivial with someone that doesnt have a clue. you have come to the point your doing nothing but trying to insult and sling mud instead of argue your useless point that you have seemed to lose track of. now regardless of previous statements, i will just give you a totally pointless benefit of the doubt and say that a team gains some motivation from a fight. BUT only if that fight was on someone that plagued you during the whole 60 mins of play. now, i said motivation. i wouldnt agree that it would necessarily light a fire under your teams' asses and make them play better or necessarily, harder. but, it would give them the satisfaction that a thorn was removed, so to speak, from their sides. and again, that ties into frustration. which again, you wont agree with me. a leader knows when and when not to react such as he did. after all, if you want to motivate your team, the end of the game is not the time. it wont help you 2 days from that point. the team would have totally forgotten about the end of the game and focused on that days' game.
and that is where your not seeing my point. and your not wanting to see my point. nor do i care anymore.

if you want to argue leadership with me, get in a leadership role, learn to play hockey, get away from being the "tv hockey player" that you are, then come talk to me. because you are also stuck in your one way mentality. otherwise, you would have understood where im coming from instead of just shooting down everythign i say without the attempt to see what is actually being explained. GG

as for the football info...i just threw that out there. no point was being made. just sharing useless info. nothing more, nothing less. nothing said i was a #1 fan. nor do i care that i spelled ruslans last name wrong. you know who i was talking about. so, my point got through. all i had said is that i follow two teams. the wings and the lightning. i dont go around with red wings garb, license plate, etc. as you said, i havent proclaimed myself as being a number one fan at any sport. you proclaimed me as that #1 guy.

p.s. all the mud slinging coming from someone that doesnt even know how the instigator penalty is assessed to a player.
nice try at looking it up online though. but still, you should have cross referenced it to see how it is assessed instead of just worrying about what determines a player from being suspended by it. i dont give a damn about suspending him. he will do just fine at taking himself out of the game by getting himself useless penalties as he did in game 5.

you dont get me, i dont get you. neither of us care what the other has to say. so, im gonna be the bigger man and not respond to flames back and forth. if you have something constructive to say, sure. but as of now, you have gone on the lower end and created this into a personal attack that im no longer going to feed.

I didn't bother to read anything that was above, but looks like neither Morwen or I will be winning 100k from each other since I said PIT in 6 and she said DET in 5 D:

Edit: ready =/= read
