I didn't say the penalty was BS, I'm just supporting the lack of a suspension which is the usual case involved with those penalties now. Especially in the end of a game. And I said that one of the reasons was blatant, which justifies the penalty. Something I didn't say (and I checked) is that Malkin didn't deserve the penalty or instigate at all. And if 5 feet is traveling, well, sure. He went out of his way to get to Hank, but not out of his way in the sense that he was a good 15 feet away or any other distance that shows obvious headhunting.
I guess by rule, it should have been a suspension. I think the blame here though should be placed on the NHL rulebook, for having such a stupid rule in place. If you're gonna gear a rule towards "goons", whom this rule is obviously set for, you might as well put a disclaimer that it will only be enforced if your name is Goddard, Orr, Ruutu, or some others.
I'll be the first to say (even as a die-hard Pens fan) that Malkin should've got to watch Game 3 from the press box. It was stupid of him to tempt fate by starting something silly (after a ridiculous flop by Os-overrated) and even putting the idea of suspension in the heads of the committee.
Sadly, that's the NHL we live in today. Rules and penalties go out the window when the playoffs start, and by the finals it's basically a free-for-all. The Wings are smart, they know they can interfere and clutch and grab and all that and get away with it. The Pens, after 9 games over the last two years now, are finally catching wind of it. I think the Pens would have a much better chance in this series if Game 102 of the season was called exactly like Game 1, but that's just not how it works. It's sad, and the NHL buries their credibility each and every time one of these calls is missed, overlooked, or outright dismissed, as they have for much of the finals so far.
