Advent Children Complete
Taken
Gran Torino
Akira
I have taken, it looks great except for the night shots, where it looks like shit. I'm betting the cameras they used have crappy night modes, it looks grainy as hell.

Ok i have never watched Lost before. Due to the mad raving about this show from friends and near perfect scores for season 1-4 on blu-ray.com... I went and picked up Season 1.

I must say WTF is there a need for 7 disks in this season. There are 25 episodes and 7 FREAKING DISKS! I was under the impression BRDs were going to reduce the amount of disks i need.. I hate shit like this. Where are the 50-100GB BRDs?

Seriously? Seven Discs? That's BS. Even with the picture being brought up to HD, 25 episodes shouldn't take up 7 discs. It sounds to me you've been ripped off.

I just watched 4 episodes back to back.. Seems like a great show.

I really dont understand the 7 disk thing. When i have DL HD movies in the past they could take up to 7GB. So i guess an episode of Lost could be 3-5GB... 4 episodes per disk... It does make sense space wise that 25 episodes plus extras takes 7 of the 25GB disks. The problem is where are the larger BRDs? Where are the 50-100GB disks?? Where is the huge benefit in BRDs? I thought it was extra space and less disks.. Bullshit. Again, Bullshit.

I got 7 discs with the Star Trek original series season 1 as well. It's annoying and lame but... also remember these are 1 hour shows, so a 25 episode season is 1500 minutes... and a movie is normally 120-180 minutes. Also HD downloads are compressed... you get the high def resolution but that doesn't mean you'll get a bitrate that'll take advantage of it with the fine detail.

Also from a marketing perspective... people are stupid. It's been shown that people perceive more value from more discs. So while it'll be possible with the 50 gb and bigger discs to squeeze more content onto one disc... people will see it as less valuable. It's infuriating, I know... but what can be done about it, I don't know?

On 7 disks there is 1048 minutes of footage.. I have every season of the X-files and they use the same exact amount of DVDs with more minutes per season. Sure we are now talking about HD video but i am getting highly pissed at this situation.. 7 disks in the previous format and 7 disks in this format... Its a failure to me. Though your idea of stupid consumers thinking more disks=more value is kinda the truth eh.

HBO shows only have 2 on them as well, currently watching True Blood. It can hold much more. I have Smallville season 7, and i'm pretty sure it's only one disc lol.

Here's the thing that's really going to piss you off.

As you know, bitrate, not resolution, is what determines the amount of space every second takes up. So you can increase the resolution and keep the bitrate low, resulting in a less detailed, but smoother image. This is pretty much all that's possible for anything filmed digitally in standard def, as the detail was never extracted when it was filmed. So let's say you're looking at a show like that... something in the 90s most likely. They could fit an entire season, at the original bitrate with upscaled resolution on ONE DISC. But they won't because people see one disc and think "crap." Though it's actually true, in that case, that it would be crap compared to regular blu-rays, detail wise. It's the best possible for that particular piece of content, and if you like that content... you're going to want that.

This stuff just frustrates me to no end. I am a supporter of Blu-Ray. I have well over 100 Blu-Rays now.. I have commited to this format.. They need to shape this shit up.

No blu-ray players are set up to handle more than a double-layered blu-ray; and most of the older models can't even do that. That's probably why they're not dual/quad layering them right now, because most of the players couldn't handle it.

The issue is software not hardware based. I'm fairly sure that every model can be upgraded to read them, though some will require a disc to do that if they lack an ethernet port. The issue is more marketing than technical. You can bet your ass though that anyone with an older, non-ethernet model would be able to upgrade it - they're the early adopter, $1000 for their player crowd.

Battlestar Galactica coming out next week. My sister is a huge fan and has been tryin to get me to see it, for I might wait til the first price drop though. $200ish is a lot of money even for an entire series.(It's a lot to spend in one big purchase.)

Lots of good Star Trek stuff coming out though this year.

Season 2 of the original series.
Star Trek - 2009 movie.
The Next Gen movie collection.

I really hope they consider doing the Next Gen regular series on blu-ray. I've said it before but it really would be the thing I want most. More than Saving Private Ryan, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Willow, etc... Best of Both Worlds and All Good Things on blu would be out of this world.

Coraline on Blu-Ray with the 3d mode turned on and the glasses was trippy as hell.
I thought it looked like shit, the colors were horrible and nothing really looked 3D. It looked nothing like it did in the theaters; I was horribly disappointed.

I bet the presentation varies widely depending on the TV you're using for this. Contrast ration and resolution for example. I can imagine anything under 1080p and lower contrast ration can cause the 3d image the suffer. I haven't tested or heard of it but it makes sense to me.

I don't buy that at all, especially because I've tested it on two completely different technologies(One of them is even 3D ready) and they both are pretty much unwatchable in 3D mode. Also, every review for the DVD says the 3D sucks, so I highly doubt that the TV you're watching on has anything to do with it; unless it looks better on shitty equipment, but I have no way to check that.

Got a great website for anyone who's looking for either some cheap blu-ray's, or bought some HD-DVD's back before they stopped being produced.

The website is www.red2blu.com

Basically, Warner Brothers is offering a very cheap blu-ray replacement for any Warner Brothers HD-DVD's that you have purchased. The best part is, you get to keep the HD-DVD's. They only require you to send in the original box art for the HD-DVD's, and then it's $5 per blu-ray you're getting. At the Fry's I work at, we're selling HD-DVD's for $3-$4; so you're looking at $9-$10 per blu-ray; it's a great way to expand your HD library for cheap.

I got my blu-ray's in yesterday, so it was about a 3 week turn around. I scanned the covers for my HD-DVD's and printed out copies for my red boxes.
