Oils & Powders... why don't people have them?

at lvl 50 anyone subing whm or Rdm has Sneak and invis.
I'm not sayin people shouldn't always carry powders and oils on em, I just think they shouldn't have to use em unless it's an emergency situation when sneak can't be cast.

50+, a lot of my parties have been Rdm, Whm, Blm/whm, DDx2 and a tank. Great setup obviously. But my point is this: 3 mages 3 Damage dealers, go with a buddy system, 1 person sneak/invis for 2 people.

If someone falls behind, they have to use a powder/oil. There place where it's safe to stop and recast in almost every zone, just stop and recast when possible.

Mages bitch about it too much and non-mages bitch about Mages bitchin too much.

Of course now that I'm thinkin about it, I'm bitchin about both of em, so I guess that makes me even worse :?

pwned.

wait ....

You can't do that to yourself!

Shannanigans on trip. :?

sorry

I apologize for confusing the situation, Damiuss. I had no idea our mage gave you a /tell telling you not to use your items.. I just assumed since you died where did (which was the worst place there) you didn't have oils to begin with T_T; That was my fault, I'm sorry.

About the party set up.. yeah I sent tells to everyone and even in party chat told everyone it wouldn't work... yet I seem to remember you urging us to go and get "some" exp. This isn't flame against you or defense on my part, but I knew things weren't gonna work out once we left Jeuno T-T

I carry tonkos. I carry oils. I use them if a sneak/invis goes bad. If not, I'm stopping in a safe spot and asking politely for a reapplication. Are you going to blow a jugular when I do?

No blown jugulars here, but I've lost count of the times a sneak/invis has gone bad for someone on the way to camp and I've had to go back and get them or -- much more often -- had to go back to the zone to fetch a replacement player.

I'll still go back and get them because I'm a WHM and taking care of people is sorta what we do, but I'm going to point out they should carry a stack of oils and powders. It's not out of line to expect that.

I always tell them to get to safety when sneak or invis starts to wear off before telling me they need it again, but you'd be surprised at how many can't grasp a simple concept like that that. My favorite was the PLD in Kuftal who told me sneak was wearing and then ran right at a bunch of crabs who cut him to ribbons a few seconds later.

Pretty much whatever needs to have been said, has been said.

And Pere...I'm all for sneak/invis buddies, but in some zones (best I can think of is Ro'Maeve), that really doesn't work. Also, if there's two, or daresay, just the one mage in the party, that buddy system goes to pieces REALLY fast. I'm all for tossing everyone a courtesy sneak/invis or two, but there's a difference between being nice and flat-out holding their hand.

People who can't manage sneak/invis are no different than people who can't manage their JAs properly...not referring to price or any of that crap, I'm referring to a few ingame things that are clockwork, that you should be able to figure out really easily. The crushing gil burden is...well, not that crushing, but too bad either way. The game's not all about levelling, people can at least dedicate a little time towards getting something like this, just in case it comes to be needed (which, I guaruntee it eventually will). Every job farms gil for something expensive, wether it be a haubergeon, sniper ring, scorpion harness, erase, utsusemi, whatever. If the time can be put forward for that crap, surely time can be put forward for some 18k KY bottles. -_-

that shit can get expensive, typically I only use them for emergencies and annoying places like Ro'Meave or Ru'Avitue. It's not worth pissing away like 3k in silent oils just to pass through a simple place like Kuftal.

The better question is, since when does someone with the ability to steal a 18k gold beastcoin every 5 minutes = someone unable to spend 30k every 5-6 parties for oils and powders?

I suppose every time I go out I should provide the food and drinks for each member, since I can make just about anything with 97 cooking?

That you would think I'm capable of making 18k every five minutes is flattering, but a bit naive. Gold steals fail at least 4/5 of the time with solid (+10) steal equipment on in a xp setting, and the rate doesn't get much better when they start checking easy prey. They're nice, but they're not bread and butter. I don't get BC invites like a blm, and I've made more money by BC'ing than thievery ever has made me. And I don't even BC that often. The thief=gil argument is a complete farce. Thievery is a side allowance, not a breadwinner. A NM hunter is a NM hunter is a NM hunter. TH2 is at best...20% luckier? 15% So instead of making 50 million while hunting you make 40 over the course of 9 months? Woopdeedoo, that's still 40 million, and you probably get an instant ranged attack in return so you can actually claim something. But the thief=gil argument is another topic alltogether.

Like I said, I'm not "unable" to buy oils and powders. I'm not rich, but I'm not broke. I always carry both. When it's practical I'd simply like mages to respect that they have something for free that I have to pay to get. And after all that if you don't invite me, saying "don't get that nin they too cheap 2 carry oil!!" really...spare me the invite and do us both a favor. I'd rather not sit through three hours of such a player's recitations about how the game should be played and what is and isn't gimp. Like the rest of us care what they think...

Most mages would help me out, and do it gladly. I thank them for that. For the rest that just take off without offering initials or who pitch a fit when I'm standing by rabbits asking for a sneak to get through raptors...poo on you. Try harder and stop worshiping gil.

so, 36k an hour while you xp.... Seems like oils/powders should not be a problem.

No you are completely right on the point of me saying lets go and get some xp. I felt the party set up was great and it was. The problem came with some of the people not knowing what to do. Not saying it was you, you seemed to know what was up. It was the SMN's pull that got the party smoked. I was irritated at him not you because he had gotten a party that I was in with him killed the same way the night before. All cleared up though so its all good.

^_^ oh okay good. I don't really have any bad blood with anyone on the server and I plan too keep that way. Glad we could work this out, perhaps we can party again sometime. You seem to know your stuff too. Sorry for the misunderstandings. And yes... our mage didn't know how to carby pull /cries

Im a mere lvl 32 thf, and i kick my self for not getting up the gil to get a stack of oils and powders...
*goes of to farm*

Damius, this isn't directed only to you, but to everyone who once told anyone this reason. I'm just writing it here cause you brought up that excuse.

I love these answers ... MY SNEAK WORE OFF FAST

Please correct me if i'm wrong, but you have 3 warnings before it wears off. I've been playing this game for over a year now, and i have NEVER found myself in a situation where i didn't have enough time to hide before the 3rd warning. So please, everyone, stop with these "Sneak wore off too fast" or "I didn't have time to recast" or "I didn't see it wear off". You get 3 warnings, and they're written in red!!!!! How the hell can you miss that!
I mean, come on, seriously. Just admit it, you didn't do shit to hide before the 3rd warning...

And i agree, if you don't have Sneak and Invis spells, Bring your damn oils and powders!! Yes they're expensive, yes it's a pain to buy, but hey that's how it is! I'm lucky, i don't need to buy them as BLM except for special occasions (which is why i always keep some on me), but trust me that when i play PLD, i ALWAYS have them.

Actually I have the answer for you. The reason it wore off to fast for me to recast was because I was in map mode looking for the PLD to Tractor. I saw the messages but had to stay in map mode to figure out where the PLD was since they didnt either know <pos> or just didnt post it. By the time the third message rolled up I was too late and yes that was my fault I dont blame that on anyone but me but, I didn't rely on anyone else to save me. I knew what I was doing. Is there anything else you need answered?

Yes i have something i need to have answered : Did you read the 3 first lines of my post? Let me write them again for you :

Damius, this isn't directed only to you, but to everyone who once told anyone this reason.

If you had a reason, well it's fine, but i still think you should've simply took the map mode off, ran in a safe spot and then recast. Your PLD would've still be on the floor 5 seconds later, and his marker would've still been on your map. That being said, i wasn't there, so i don't wanna judge anything. What i'm talking about is all those people who for no reason die cause sneak wore and they didn't recast on time.

Once again (cause you don't seem to have understood it the first time) it's not directed directly to you. Sorry if you took that personnal, wasn't my intention

I understood but you seemed to want an answer for something so being the nice guy I am, I answered :)

Right, the "Buddy" system.... which in my experience amounts to 2 melee per mage (at least) constantly demanding Sneak/Invis in the most inopportune places, getting it, and promptly saying "Sneak wearing". I'll be honest, for me it's worth the 2K+ to cross the zone without having to worry about hassling the mages because my Sneak wore 5 seconds after I got it.

Well, I had a personal experience last night.

I just reached level 48 and bought my lifebelt and whatnot. Well that kindly put me in the hole gil wise. I was roughly 3.2k tnl and I want to get Penta Thrust. I hear it's one of a DRG's best WS. SO I was mildly excited. I got a blind PT invite. It was in the CN. I Happen to think, well I remember reading a thread about how one needed to take their own sneak oils and prism powder. So I thought, best grab those, This isn't my static, they won't want to come sneak and invisi me. Well I get there, spent my 32k total. I get out to the PT, and after 1.2k of experience, they disband. I am left with roughly 19k left. That's not much at this level.

If you want me to buy sneak oils and prism powders, you damn well better make it worth my fucking time.

Thank you.

Mal.

Damn . I saw I misworded the "you" thing up there in the first post. Didn't want Reya to think I was flaming at her. so I hit stop, and went back to the main and got to the flameboard. Well. >> it didn't show my post. So I thought I was alright. Sorry for the double post. :x

Well firstly, why in the hell you would take a blind party invite at level 48 is beyond me, and I won't even touch on that subject further. Secondly, it's not like you aren't gonna use those oils and powders. Soooo, what's your point? Now you have them and won't need them for quite awhile. The whole point of this thread is that you need to keep those essentials on you at all times. It should be a permanent thing you need to make sure you have before you leave any town. Just like food.

Now I leave town with 4 stacks of shihei and enough ash lumber and bolt heads to equip a roman legion with arrows. Screw oils, prisms...and parties.
