Omgzormg Lets Discuss New Job Possibilities Because Its Only Six Motnths Till Wotg!!1

You are correct in that a comparison to Nazi Germany can sometimes be apt. However saying that the Nazi movement was "people just going with the flow" is a little oversimplified. First of all, the Germans of the time had a deeply anti-semitic culture, so it's not as if they acquiesced to what they percieved as unjust treatment of Jews simply because their government told them to. Secondly, the government controlled almost all media in the name of propaganda, and most of the truth about the atrocities of the concentration camps was kept not only from the public but also from lower to mid level goverment functionaries. Thirdly, in the context of Morwenny's argument (which I agree with, by the way*), the metaphor is weak at best. If you want to demonstrate a lemming like "follower" mentality there are much better examples than Nazi Germany, such as the Jonestown Massacre or third-world mothers denying their children Western Polio vaccines because their mullahs issued a fatwah. That is why I invoked Godwin's Law.

* In that I believe mindless faith unenlightened by curiosity or questioning is akin to slavery. I nevertheless have respect for informed, non fundamentalist, non eschatological belief - it's a moral paradox I myself am not able to master.

See, I disagree.. I look at Naziism as the perfect parallel to general mass religion.

Consider how much "Propaganda" that Christianity has, and how often people get "brainwashed" by it without even considering it, or thinking about it. Naziism is the same way, were people to actually look at it, and not just blindly follow it, they could have seen the corruption within the system.

Can you see the parralels there? It's really a great comparison, in my eyes. I can say that I'm not familiar with the other events you've listed, so I can't necessarily say it's "better."

Fun times.

Did you know they make a 4-sided one now?! >.> I got it for my nephews last year ^^;

:O I want one really bad now!

You know I'm glad you said this because earlier I was thinking about something that always kind of struck me in psychology/sociology classes. Karl Marx once said that "Religion is the opiate of the people." He was very disillusioned with organized religion because his argument was that historically, religion had been used to manipulate people into accepting ridiculous amounts of misery in their lives (from kings, rulers, opressors, etc.) under the guise of keeping your head down, bearing all, and being a "good", dutiful person, on the promise of paradise in the afterlife. He argued that people with that kind of blind faith, never questioning, never "opening their eyes" so-to-speak were basically enablers of tyranny. Pie in the sky mentality... torture me and mistreat me now but it's ok because God will save me and I'll live forever in paradise. He had a point.

They're at Toys 'R' Us, pretty cheap I think, about $25.00

And... thats exactly what my point was.

You can say the same thing about any organized society, business, etc.

That's the whole point of this argument, really. People in any organized community blindly following whatever their leader or superior says.

Yes and no. It's a different scale. I mean if Nike puts out an ad and says "This is what's hot," sure, people are going to line up to buy. If Nike said, "Green people are evil and should all be slain in the name of Nike," people aren't going to start sharpening their blades. Now if the Pope said that (not that he would, obviously), there would be people who would follow that dictate. Religion is something people have been fighting and dying for in any given country, any given time period, for ages. That's what makes it a little more unique than anything else.

lol Laser Tag was the shit. I got in so much trouble with that @ my friend's 10th birthday party; it was cold and rained the whole night so we Laser Tagged all over his 2-story, $200,000+ (in 1992) home :o

I was never a laser tag fan. I always thought it was so bulky and heavy and fragile.

Our local Roller Skate Rink (christ does that put a date on my age or what), built a Laser Tag room in their building. It was friggin AWESOME. We would all bug our parents to go there every night. It was supervised so they would have someone from our families drop us off like 2-3 nights a week. It was pretty awesome.

We (the US) invaded a country for basically no particular reason. When the war started, there was a huge support for the war based on "evidence" and the recent 9/11 attacks. Today, not so much.

You want a great example? I'll give you one that hits very close to home if most of you can all remember it. Before the flameboard was removed by the then admin, Sculli, (and I believe it was also the motivating factor in the decision) there was a flame involving Kinkerbelle by her "friend" who's name escapes me at the moment. Everyone began to attack this person with no regard for him at all without even questioning the motives and it was a terrible display of our forums. Someone masquerading as Kink's friend gained the ire of the entire community against that person and everyone including Kink attacked his character without once stopping to think it may be someone else. When I get home (I am at work now), I'll see if I can link the thread if it still exists. It's a "great" display of mob mentality if I ever saw and it was a sad display by many of those involved.

My point is there is no scale, the mob mentality isn't just religion or society. It's people. Any where there is two or more people, you can have a group of thoughtless drones all acting stupid without any regard for their actions.

<.< What ever happend to Laser Tag? I always wanted that too.

Oh man, I loved laser tag. When the first one near me was built my cousin and I went and I remember trying to act like a ninja. Too bad a few months after it was build it smelled like piss inside. Little kids would just go sit in the dark corners and pee themselves D:

I'd imagine I'd fall down a lot if I had to rent those clumsy brown skates as well as wear gear. D:

I admit I've never seen the Chuck Norris Mountain Dew commercial. I've known of it's existence for all for about one minute now.

Yeah political leaders have been sending people to die for lots of reasons for ages too. I didn't say that motivated people can't put the blinders on over anything other than religion. I said there are different scales. And there are. Historically there are. Major corporations have never had the kind of influence that say the Pope or the Dalai Lama has. To make them equal is just foolish. I'm not disagreeing with you that the "mob mentality" can happen in other arenas. I'm saying few, if any over history, have influenced as many people to that degree as religion.

On a side note, I recall the thread you're talking about and you use the term "everyone" pretty loosely. Not everyone in that thread was calling for his head. In fact, many people were saying it was totally out of character and that something seemed not right. And again, a bunch of people getting angry at a supposed wrong in an internet forum is not on the same level as religious wars/ crusades/ influence. I'm sure numerous lives weren't hanging in the balance because of a post made here. That's kind of what I'm trying to say.

rofl, they made us take our skates off to go inside! It was only blacklights and smoke with a bunch of obstacles to hide behind... hell I'd probably still go in there, lol.

Aw I just thought of some other ones I wanted too! :-x

One was a pottery-wheel type thing. Had the pedestal and the batteries and the clay and came with paints and you could make your own cool pottery stuff. My sister had one never let me use it. lol

That and EZ-bake oven and the snoppy sno-cone machine!
