One reported dead, several injured in Virginia Tech shootings

I agree with the above post. He did do everything he thought was needed. They assumed the shooter was long gone and it was a domestic dispute. The media did jump on him during the press conference. But if you were a mother or father or friend or a student that had to hide or jump out of the window. Would you not question why the school was allowed to stay open? They hadn't found the shooter. They hadn't found a weapon on either two of the dead students in the dorm so it wasn't a murder/suicide. And the emails didn't go out until the second shooting was about to start.

He did what he thought was best. But there will always be people who say it wasn't enough, because it really wasn't. The emails could've gone out sooner, they could've locked the campus down, they could've done a lot of things. Would it have avoided the whole thing? Maybe. But maybe not. If the shooter was in such a rage that he went on a shooting spree who's to say he wouldn't have gone to a store/other school and done the same thing to others?

I'm sure there will be more blame put on him and other people that work at the school in the near future. It's how people are. People look for someone to blame. In the end, it was the shooter who takes the fault. But he's dead. He can't be put on trial he can't be made to feel bad. Those still alive that people put their children's live's and trust in, school officials and security guards, will be blamed because they "didn't" do everything they could've done, atleast in some people's minds.

It was a hall with multiple classrooms. The doors in and out of the hall were chained shut. They're saying here that the first two that were shot were his girlfriend/ex girlfriend and a RA. Haven't heard mention of a new boyfriend.

*Edit* I agree it makes some sense to assume that he would've fled after killing his gf/ex gf/her new bf/RA. Which ever it is. But in this day, and with how many school threats and shootings there have been in the past 10-15 years..why take the chance and leave the school completely open except for the one dorm. They say they didn't close it because of the size of the campus. But would it have been that hard to station cops/guards at the entrances/exits of the campus to keep more students from getting in and getting the ones on campus out atleast until they caught the shooter?

Ah thanks that explains it. Because i was wondering how he managed to lock multiple exits or the buildings were illegal... Yeah i imagine locking the hall while they were in classrooms would be easy.

And yeah i agree, they should have shutdown the school. I mean hell i really fail to see how hard it is, tell my that school is closed and i have they day off and you won't see me for dust.

Sucks they are grilling the guy but it's the media it's what they do. Besides it kinda IS his responsibility even if it is way out of his league. Stupid point though about the drilling and shit though as the guy was a student, he would have known the drills.

Edit: Thanks for pointing that out Ith, guess that answers my query.

Well not all the students lived on campus. There were some in transit to school at the time so it really would've been hard to shut it all down via email/phone calls. As well as the classes started at 8am. So there were already a lot of students there and in classes at the time of the second shooting. They could have sent everyone off campus and closed down the entrances and exits. But that might've caused a bigger problem. The shooter would've had a bigger chance to get a bigger group of people as they walked out of the campus together.

I'm kind of back and forth about the closing the campus down. In a way, yes I think it would've been the best option and could've saved the lives of those students. But in another way it could've set up more people to be hurt as they would've been in potentially larger groups getting off campus.

I agree it is a larger target, but i figured given they would have had armed police on the gates the chances of him being killed before he killed 32 people are pretty high (not that they knew 32 people were going to be killed).

Idk pretty morbid thoughts really.

That is another point I've thought about. The fact that even if in a larger group the police could've gotten to him faster.

/sigh I'm starting to feel like the media here. Thinking about the what if's. It's hard to help though, no one wants these type of things to repeat so we all think of the what if's and try to figure out ways to prepare better for the next time. If only there wasn't a next time.

Since someone asked yesterday was Holocaust Rememberance Day. The Jewish teacher killed was a Holocaust survivor. He died holding the door closed while students escaped.

First Gun Bought March 13; No 'Spur of the Moment' Crime
April 17, 2007 11:12 AM

Brian Ross and Richard Esposito Report:

Cho Seung-Hui bought his first gun, a 9 mm handgun, on March 13 and his second weapon, a 22 caliber handgun, within the last week, law enforcement officials tell ABCNews.com.

"This was no spur of the moment crime. He's been thinking about this since at least the time he bought the first gun," said former FBI agent Brad Garrett, an ABC News consultant.

Both guns were bought in Virginia, according to the officials.

Under Virginia law, state residents can only buy one handgun in any 30 day period, suggesting Cho bought his second weapon after April 13, or sometime over the weekend.

"He clearly spent some time figuring out how he was going to take care of business once classes began on Monday morning," said Garrett.

The date of the first gun purchase will likely serve as the time of "some triggering mechanism that was very important" to Cho said Garrett, an expert on profiling murderers.

Slain Israeli Professor Saved Others in Va. Tech Massacre

by Gil Ronen

(IsraelNN.com) As Israel observed Holocaust Day, thousands of miles away, A Rumanian-born Holocaust survivor gave his life in another senseless murder - and apparently in an act of heroism.

Among the 32 people killed by a lone gunman at Virginia Tech Monday is 77-year-old engineering professor, Liviu Librescu, a citizen of Israel. According to eyewitness accounts, Librescu ran to the door of his classroom and blocked it with his body – preventing the gunman from entering but getting shot to death himself as a result.

Alec Calhoun, a 20-year-old student who had been in Librescu's class in room 204, told a reporter that at 9:05 a.m. the heard screams and a loud banging sound from the next-door classroom. When the students realized it was gunfire, he said, some hid behind tables, and others leapt from the classroom's windows. Calhoun himself was among the last to jump. "Before I jumped from the window, I turned around and looked at the professor, who stayed behind, maybe to block the door. He had been killed."

Librescu is survived by his wife of 42 years, Marlena, who was with him in Virginia, and sons Aryeh and Joe who are in Israel. They intend to bury him in Israel.

Asael Arad, an Israeli student who visited the widow after the tragedy, told Army Radio Tuesday that Marlena had been receiving e-mails from students who credited Prof. Librescu with saving their lives. "I lost my best friend," the widow told a reporter for NRG at her home near the Blacksburg campus. "He was a great person, who loved teaching more than anything." Marlena said someone had initially informed her that her husband was injured in the shooting. "I looked for him in the hospitals all day but I didn't find him," she said.

The Librescus are Rumanian Jews who came on aliyah (immigrated to Israel) in 1978 – after then-Prime Minister Begin interceded on their behalf with the Rumanian government, according to Marlena. The couple went on a sabbatical to the United States since 1986 and has been living there ever since.

WBC (Westboro Baptist Church) will preach at the funerals of the Virginia Tech students killed on campus during a shooting rampage April 16, 2007. You describe this as monumental horror, but you know nothing of horror -- yet. Your bloody tyrant Bush says he is 'horrified' by it all. You know nothing of horror -- yet. Your true horror is coming. *"They shall also gird themselves with sackloth, and horror shall cover them; and shame shall be upon all faces, and baldness upon all their heads" (Eze. 7:18). *

Why did this happen, you ask? It's simple. Your military chose to shoot at the servants of God today, and all they got for their effort was terror. Then, the LORD your God sent a crazed madman to shoot at your children. Was God asleep while this took place? Was He on vacation? Of course not. He willed this to happen to punish you for assailing His servants.

Guess protesting the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq and people who die froms AIDS isn't enough for them anymore.

.22 calibre pistol? Was this guy's father ex-Spetznaz or some shit?

There are just some cases where you should knock someone the fuck out for the shit they do. I hope these fucking bitches don't get any where near the funeral services.

There's no way any one could be this disrespectful.

I seriously abhor these people, they are so repugnant and base their entire religious interpretation off of hate hate hate. It is so typical of them to do this.

The whole issue kinda leaves me somewhat at a loss save the obligatory

'jesus that's some sad/horrible shit, prayers for the loved ones and family and whatnot.'

Now that that's out of the way i've gotta wonder if those fundamentalist fuckbags from the link quoted a couple posts back would see it as divine providence were i to rig their offices with pipe-bombs and go about making swiss cheese of the congregation -.-

Those people are attrocious. (sp?)

And there we have it - a man who had paid his dues, who had seen hardship and atrocity beyond anything I myself can personally imagine, giving all he had for others. Did he look for someone else to play the hero? Did he look for someone else to stand up in defense of his own life and the lives of his students? No. His will to action, his resolve, and his courage were all he found to be necessary to address the task at hand.

God bless this man. May choirs of angels sing him to his much-deserved rest.
