One reported dead, several injured in Virginia Tech shootings

I can't wait for the reports from his friends that "We thought he was just kidding." Always gotta love salt in the wounds.

(I just heard about this, and being fairly close in the region - kinda scarey)

This is really disgusting and scary. My heart breaks for the students and their families effected from this.

My campus is pretty lax on security (sometimes I wander the halls at nearly 8-9pm at night, with no one asking what I'm doing). However, we usually have a cop doing full time hours on campus, usually assisting in crosswalk sort of things.

I agree that many schools will tighten security after this. Considering the amount of scares and copy-cats following columbine, I would consider some extra security helpful.

Again, this is a horrible situation and I really feel for every effected.

(CNN reported this the worst mass shooting in America, ever. Sickening)

Man another one?

Frosh packs for colleges in the states should come standard with a ballistic helmet and some Kevlar. Poor students :(

News just reported over 30 deaths(already mentioned in the thread) and that he chained the doors shut after he entered so the students couldn't get out and police couldn't get in. That he was well prepared for this. If he was indeed looking for his girlfriend..I don't see why he would've had (reportedly) two guns and extra clips as well as chaining the doors shut.

(This was reported by NBC news a few minutes ago before the press conference whether it's true or not I don't know.)

They also said they don't know if he was a student or not at this point.

This is the 4th school I've heard about in the past two months where something like this has happened or was threatened to happen. (2 schools in Oregon were shut down from a scare a few days ago, there was a killing at a Washington University a few weeks ago.)

This is now the largest mass murder in US History, at 32 deaths it reachs double the last one at 16. Crazy, huh? Sometimes you have to kinda look at society with a questionable eye because this world is going down hill. Disgusting.

Worst one wasnt 16 - which was columbine. Worst one was like 23, a fairly long time ago.

Just from the experience of going to Columbine and having a sibling there during the shootings.....

Added security won't stop people that are intent on going on maniacal, senseless killing sprees. Unless it is brought to an extreme which is just oppresive to be around which no one really wants. I know if my school had the level of security necessary to completely stop this kind of act I would not be here; no one wants to spend college in that type of environment.

Stay informed but don't be glued to CNN etc. The news media are a bunch of vultures that just hang around for these types of things and exploit most everyone involved. In high school one time there was a food fight....it made the national news and was being called a riot just because it was Columbine. I feel sorry for VT students not only because of their loss but because they will have to put up with this bullshit. Try not to exacerbate this type of media coverage yourself; check up on but don't sit glued to the TV.

My feelings go out to the students, faculty, families who are effected by this senseless act of violence, it is probably one of the most depressing things to die young and for no good reason.

The saddest part about all of this is that there just isn't enough security on campuses. I came to school hearing about how we had smart doors where only students with IDs could get in, and that campus police patrolled alot.

Schools should be more secured I agree..but I just find it sad that we live in a place where security has to make sure nothing dumb or sad like this happens.

It's a shame that you can't feel safe anywhere now. My heart goes out to all the victim's families.

My condolences and prayers to anyone who knew any of the students, faculty, and families that were affected by this horrible event. It gives me great pain to think that shit like this happens but we all can't predict when it will happen. We can only hope it doesn't happen at all.

That ex-marine killer?

That would be Charles Whitman, ex-marine that did the UT Tower shootings in Austin, Tx 1966.

Not sure if that's who Arctyrael was talking about. My family never talked much about this considering my grandmother was pregnant(with my dad) and locked in a doctor's office a few blocks from the tower when this occured, so I don't know how many people were killed, but have read it was 16, including wife and mother.

And from another post. It's not a water tower(as far as I know, never heard it called a water tower in the 12 years I lived in Austin). It's the college tower they light up when UT(University of Texas) wins football/basketball games. etc. They also just reopened the public viewing in it a few years ago(98 I believe), as it had been closed (as far as I know) since the shooting.

Why the school shootings keep happening I don't know. But it seems (to me) that they've been getting more frequent. As I mentioned in a previous post, there's been a few threats up here in the past few months.

I hope all those hurt will recover from this and the families can, in time, heal over the senseless deaths that occured today.

Columbine was 12, Texas water tower was 15 including his wife and mother which was in 1966 and considered the worst up until now.

Oye my bad but yea, that

Confirmed a total of 33 deaths including gunman, 15 hurt. They haven't IDed the gunman yet.

There were two "incidents" the first was 2 shootings, 2 dead. They didn't shut down the campus after that and the major "incident" happened where the other 31 were killed, 2 hours after the first. - Nbc news conference.

The questions being asked at this news conference are fucking retarded.

Quote from Yahoo! News http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070416...shooting_75;_ylt=Ank.YS5wL7JK2xTbEQMs64VsaMYA

Students and Laura Wedin, a student programs manager at Virginia Tech, said the first notification they got of the shootings came in an e-mail at 9:26 a.m., more than two hours after the first shooting.

The e-mail had few details. It said: "A shooting incident occurred at West Amber Johnston earlier this morning. Police are on the scene and are investigating." The message warned students to be cautious and contact police about anything suspicious.

What the fuck? 2 hours for a notification that the school was being attacked?

Not the right person to ask, but why wouldn't a school shut down when there were 2 shooting? Dead or not, I would not be letting students go to class when there 2 shootings at a school.

Well then again..depending on the time, it would probably cause a ruckus and be a worse situation..

They are saying they didn't warn/notify/lock down the campus because they locked the dorm down and thought they had the problem contained. They never suspected a second shooting would occur.

Saying they had 5k(I think) students on campus 14k off campus coming in etc. Didn't think that an isolated incident that they thought was a domestic thing (first shooting was in a dorm room) should lock down the campus. They thought the person who did this left campus/left the state but wouldn't say as to why they thought that.

They thought they had it covered then 2 hours later as they were sweeping dorms and buildings the second shooting occured.

They are speculating the ex girlfriend lived in the dorm and that's why they thought it was an isolated problem.
