One reported dead, several injured in Virginia Tech shootings

They haven't even ID'd the man, and people are asking for motivations WTF - grow a damn brain.

It's kinda sad, people on facebook are speculating the identity of the shooter. People not even from VT.

Someone posted a link to Wikipedia where someone named a person as the shooter. It was shortly thereafter edited away. Now theres a ton of finger pointing and I really feel bad for the guy if one of his friends or some random asshole posted his name as the shooter (cause he is Asian and an Engineering major, but go figure - an Asian Engineering major) when he didn't really do it.

News conference said that a list of names and stuff will be released in the next few days. I have a few people I know who went to VT and its going to be really weird if they were killed...

Jack Thompsons already harping on about violent video games again ;x

Yea, cause we totally need to be calling into question that issue when several thousands of people's lives were touched today by disgusting acts of murder.

It would be so ironic if it is later found out that the shooter hardly ever played video games. I know it wouldn't mean anything to Jack Thompson - but atleast I know smart people would know better. I think how reporters are handling this story is almost as disgusting as the event itself.

Man I feel so sick. Four years ago we had a gunman shoot someone at the college I graduated from when I was a junior. I knew the guy that got killed, and the shooter used to come to the gym where we played pick up basketball games.

I remember when they locked our campus down and police came to lead us out, it is the worst feeling in the world and my heart just goes out to that school. Things weren't the same for me on campus my whole senior year.

I hate that they're focusing on "Worst mass murder in US History!" True or not, who cares. People are dead and mourning write the history books later.

If that person is blaming video games...lol. I'm betting that the guy had some mental illness..who really (well ok I don't know really..but just thinking) would just decide to kill anyone who doesn't know where his gf is? Oh wait it was the video games!! BURN THEM ALL!!

I don't want this to turn into a debate about the influences of video games, cause that's not the point of this thread, but I do believe if people are ignorant and don't seem to comprehend what their actions do, what the consequences are, can be influenced by games like GTA. However most people are smart and know that it's only a game and they have no wanting to do such a thing as in real life.

Can vidoe games be something that can influence your actions? Maybe i don't know..if your smart about them and realize it's just a game then there really isn't a problem.

33 dead. (Counting the gunman.)

Thats just fucking absurd. They don't even know if that guy was a student there or not. Like was said before, unreal.

And to the guy protesting violent video game....WTF? We don't even know if this guys played many violent games! What if he turned out to be a clerk for the local court or something? What then?

remember the astronaut in the diaper that tried to mace that girl?? All video games

Ok serious now. I would think that the guy is a student..his gf went there if he was lookign for her.

I think the guy had some mental illness

yeah this is scary stuff. when i was in high school someone called in a bomb and shooting threat one morning while everyone was in school, i was in lunch at the time and suddenly cops were guarding each door and we were not allowed to leave.
we were not told what was going on but just told it was a random hall sweep.
we were then moved single file into seperate classrooms and were not allowed to leave.
it was on the news, parents began gathering outside but no one was allowed in or out.
they moved us single file to the gym and through metal detectors.
then back to the classrooms.
then they called out each locker floor one by one to have every student stand by and open their lockers (DUMB because if something were to go down, this would have been the time).
eventually we got out of school 45 minutes after the school day ended...people screaming and crying, hugging their kids.
It was scary as hell. especially for me when i had a bad dream about the exact same situation that morning.
and when i woke i was paralyzed but awake as if someone was holding me down (the old wives tale im told is called the devil sitting on your chest) and when i sat up i saw a face in my ceiling that disappeared fast.
soon as i saw the cops i had the feeling someone was trying to keep me home and i was gonna die....talk about scared.

I know this is a bit of a stupid thing to say, but...many are saying this is the worst shooting in US history, worse than Columbine...but I'm wondering if that's entirely true? I mean...more people died/were injured...which truly is horrible, and my hearts go out to them. But the people in Columbine were for the most part selected and actually executed, plus explosives were hidden in select areas. Just the concept of that makes me think that's still somewhat worse...but then not all informations been given out yet, so I dunno.

Really a morbid thought...sorry.

Your not entirely wrong. It is true that this one seemed it was a more spur of the moment attack. Maybe there was a deeper motive here that truly sets this off the scale, or it's just what it was; a psychopathic attack. It was still a horrible thing that will be remembered for years to come.

Well... we're just about only 1 day into this one. We don't know much of anything, really.

Well Columbine wasn't the worst campus shooting in history either..This one is named that, as well as worst shooting in US history, I believe, just because of how many deaths there were.

As for how the shooting went about. The fact that in Columbine they were selected and executed, yes that to me would be worse in a way. Just like the shooting recently in the Ammish(sp) community. I believe the girls who died there were lined up and executed after their classmates (boys) had to help barricade the building, and were sent outside. (I could be wrong but I think this is what was reported.)

This one was also very horrific in how it went about. He was well prepared for it. Two guns, extra clips, a reported bulletproof vest on, as well as chaining the doors shut. They couldn't escape unless they jumped from windows, the shooting was on the second floor of the building. Two people were reportedly shot while they were trying to jump out.

All school shootings are horrific and senseless. I wish the media wouldn't go on so much about this one being the worst or that one. It hurts everyone, including people who don't even know anyone involved. And it just adds to the pain that the media are all over it and reporting about it every 5 seconds it seems.

To some extent yes it's needed. People need to know it happened and what went on. But after it's past the point of educating people of the event, and they still keep going, it just hurts more people. Seeing the videos and images over and over again. Interviewing the ones hurt or the ones that were locked in hiding under desks in a dark classroom.

They're saying the guy was indeed a student there now. About 19. They still won't release the ID though.

My heart goes out to the families and those having to heal from their wounds. It was senseless and it won't be the last unforunatly.

Well i doubt the guy named as the shooter will be that bothered really. I mean the fact he is alive is a pretty good indication it wasn't him.

Don't classrooms have to have two exits for fire safety reasons? I mean i'm assuming this one didn't if they had to jump out the window but i thought that was a legal requirement.

Nasty stuff, feel sorry for the people involved. Sidenote: don't believe the sun >.>

Edit: Ok while i still think it was rather dickheaded to let classes continue, it makes alot more sense if he had already killed his ex and her new bf. Makes more sense that he would flee than go on a suicidal killing spree.

It was a hall with multiple classrooms. The doors in and out of the hall were chained shut. They're saying here that the first two that were shot were his girlfriend/ex girlfriend and a RA. Haven't heard mention of a new boyfriend.

*Edit* I agree it makes some sense to assume that he would've fled after killing his gf/ex gf/her new bf/RA. Which ever it is. But in this day, and with how many school threats and shootings there have been in the past 10-15 years..why take the chance and leave the school completely open except for the one dorm. They say they didn't close it because of the size of the campus. But would it have been that hard to station cops/guards at the entrances/exits of the campus to keep more students from getting in and getting the ones on campus out atleast until they caught the shooter?

this is really sad, and i'd bet my car that the first thing out of anybodies mouth is "More gun control" but that's a different rant. My prayers go out to the families and friends of the ones that lost their lives in this tragedy.

But the media is really starting to piss me off, i don't know if anybody else saw/heard the interview w/ the university president but i was absolutely appauled. This poor guy just went thru possibly the most tramatic event of his career, lost several students and a teacher (very possibly a good friend) and all they did was grill him about how he handled the situation, what he did wrong, etc etc. The man said himself that they do drills for occasions just as this, they have procedures to follow and he did what he knew how to do. Drilling and a sheet of paper with "what to do" won't make you ready for something like this. Leave the man alone, if you want somebody that knows how to handle situations like that down to every minute detail put a General in as university president. He did everything he could think of to do, what else can you expect of the man?

and on an off note I wonder if this was some "special" day or something, cause we had a bomb threat at UTK yesterday as well, in the Humanities building actually (the one right next to where i was in studio). nothing came of it tho, might have just been some asshole that was trying to get everybody scared.

i've always wondered....what video games did Charles Manson play? or Hitler, or the son of sam, or bundy, etc etc. get off your soapbox Jackie-boy, if you don't want your kids to play them don't let them and STFU about it.

Don't classrooms have to have two exits for fire safety reasons? I mean i'm assuming this one didn't if they had to jump out the window but i thought that was a legal requirement.

actually, no they don't. The number of fire exits required for any given space is based on expected occupancy levels, size of the room, building type, and what the room is used for. If i remember the code right it's 1 exit per every 50 occupants (in a classroom), and no more than 100 feet to an egress from the building or different fire zone of the building (i.e. door in a fire wall)
