One reported dead, several injured in Virginia Tech shootings

I always enjoyed this bit:

You don't need no gun control. You know what you need? We need some bullet control. Man, we need to control the bullets, that's right. I think all bullets should cost $5,000. $5,000 for a bullet. You know why? 'Cause if a bullet costs $5000 there'd be no more innocent bystanders. That'd be it. Every time someone gets shot, people will be like... 'Shit, they put $50,000 worth of bullets in his ass.' People would think before they killed somebody, if a bullet cost $5,000. ''Man, l would blow your fucking head off, if l could afford it.’ …'You better hope l can't get no bullets on layaway.''

I'm going to have to deal with the fact that I might get raped and murdered on a regular basis despite gun law. As a matter of fact last summer there were 3 rapes within a 2 block radius of my house. One right below my bedroom window outside my backyard. Not once did it cross my mind that I needed a gun.

It sucks but I can deal with this.

See, this is key.

You can deal with that.

Lots of people can't.

There's more of us than there are of you per capita. Hence lots more of us can't deal with it because it tends to happen more often and more often in certain areas.

The warmer you get the easier it becomes to rob people and go be a general ne'erdowell. <.<

I'm going to start arguing on the platform of 'sedatives for the masses'.

Maybe if you had CC laws, those 3 rapes would have been just 2 or 1. Since CC laws have been instituted here in Ohio, violent crimes have dropped dramatically. Some thugs approach things a little differently when granny could have a gun.

Is that what it was? I was told March 13th and Apr14th. Feb9th is almost worse.

Well they didn't know when the other gun was bought they only had the reciept on the 2nd gun they found in his backpack. They just assumed he bought the 2nd one just before the shooting. The latest report out was that he bought the .22 at a pawn shop on Feb. 9th.

Fact is, while being raped sucks, it's going to happen dispite what weapons people are carrying, however If someone has a knife I have a better chance of surviving vs if someone has a gun.

People in united states get B&Es all the time despite the fact that there's a good chance someone in the house owns a gun.

If people are getting raped outside your window get something to protect yourself.

It's a question of how many break ins there'd be without guns.

Where are those B&Es happening in cities in states with the stricter laws or the ones without those stricter laws?

RoM, Firestreak, and Reauland have covered my views of gun control beautifully. The way I see it, if the no weapon policy wasn't in place then maybe someone would have been able to take care of that kid when the shit started. By the way:

Tobacco:
- The #1 preventable cause of death in the USA
- Kills 400,000 people in the US every year and has killed over 12 million people in the US in the past thirty years.

Very true, but I wonder what the B&E numbers would be if there was no threat of home defence.

Exactly! We're getting a bad rap on this violent culture thing. We're not violent, just stupid!

On the second sentence, and someone correct me if i'm wrong, but i don't think it's legal to shoot anyone in the US unless they attack you first either and at that your life has to be demonstratably in danger for you not to at least catch an agg assault charge or better. Unless, maybe if it's a home invasion in which case ... shoulda knocked i s'pose.
I was under the assumption that trespassers could be shot if the homeowner feared for his or her safety. Someone pointed out that's a Texas law, my bad.

I agree, they've done a good job of expressing most of my beliefs as well. If someone wants a gun they're going to get a gun. Stricter laws only effect the people that actually follow the rules and would listen to the laws, not the criminals and crazies out there shooting people.

And talk about hitting the nail on the head! If you want a sneak peek at how effective stricter gun laws would be, check out our "war on drugs" that has been raging since way before I was born. We're doing a great job there, almost no one not even children have access to drugs anymore because of drugs being outlawed! Trusting our law enforcement to take care of that problem and laws to protect us was the smartest thing we've ever done!!! /rolls eyes...our drug problem is tons worse, not better. Get a clue. It's in our hands to teach people not to go apeshit in this way and to come up with more REALISTIC measures to handle these situations, not pander about giving lip service to the public by yelling about firmer laws that do absolutely nothing for the real problem. The root of the problem is for families to raise their children not to be dumbasses and for society to have a plan for when they fail at that.

But I'm cynical, I doubt that anything will ever get better. But trusting laws to do anything for us to solve the problem is not only naive, it's turning a blind eye to the obvious.

Anyone who buys 2 handguns in 30 days should have an investigator knocking on their door within hours of the 2nd purchase.

Why? There's no law against owning more than one gun. Some people (like my late grandfather) collected them. It's not exactly a red flag for possible evil-doing.

For the record, I don't actually think the government is scared of us. As someone once said, "If Janet Reno wants to come into your house, Janet Reno is coming into your house."

It's interesting how this issue is is queued up so perfectly.

For those who don't know, just over a year ago a law was proposed to allow people who have a conceal carry (CC) permit to have their guns on campus. After the initiative was defeated in subcommittee, Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was quoted as saying "I'm sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly's actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus."**

Beats Japan's "after the fact" police force. If you think the US' police force are pussies or slow, you have no idea.

I do not disagree with you there. And I'm not bashing on the police, I have police officers in my family and I respect the law. The fact still remains though that you don't generally call the police until AFTER something has happened, so it's still reactive instead of proactive. I'm not advocating everyone and their grandmother carrying guns either. All I'm saying is don't depend on others to protect you or save you. Just keep your eyes and ears open and try not to put yourself in dangerous situations. And life is just one giant risk. You can die at any moment, anywhere on this planet. The sooner you can come to terms with that fact, the sooner you can actually enjoy life.

One thing I'd like to point out to Sabia about Breaking and Entering crimes and the corelation to gun control:

"The Make My Day law is represented in several states of the United States guaranteeing "absolute safety" for citizens within their own homes. Its origins are from Oklahoma, though it has been adopted in other states such as Colorado.

Under the law, citizens cannot be prosecuted for using deadly force against suspected threats to themselves in their houses - for example (and primarily), intruders. The origins of the law can be traced to a case of a break-in, involving a Dr Frank Sommer from Oklahoma. After shooting dead an intruder, the law was passed within weeks. The success of the law is shown by many as a clear advocation for self defense as deterrence; the crime rates in Oklahoma for burglary fell from 58,333 in 1987 to 31,661 in 2000."

Taken from the wikipedia link Mish posted.

Anyone who argues that guns are the issue is a big sack of dumb. You can just as easily go on a spree with a knife, sword/machete, tire iron, golf club, baseball bat, can of aerosol and a lighter. You name it, it can be used for a violent crime, mass murder, or petty theft. Shit, you can make chemical weapons with household items, chlorine gas being one of the easiest.

I especially agree with the part about families raising their children not to be dumbasses lol. I swear people need to spank their kids more. -.-
