Has anyone noticed a lot of people leaving FFXi lately (myself included)? I know alot of the people posting in the GT thread as of late seem to be "lifers" hanging up their characters. I know people have individual reasons for moving on, but overall has FFXi began to lose some of the luster? Before I left, I even began to notice populated places being less populated, ie. Whitegate, Jueno, et al. What exactly is going on, and can SE do anything to recapture the magic?

Get the newest MMO done and to market is about all I can think of.

the same old stuff over the years gets old, it has lost some of its luster not neccesarily the game alone but when a certain popular person leaves others trail along with them or they finally finish their goals or in some cases have a new shot at life if they weren't doing so hot because of ffxi and their priorities and quit.

I don't think people leave "cuz popular people" quit.

Maybe their friends lol

I kinda feel like SE made ffxi too "soft". I realize that they have to make changes to aid in progression, however, I feel some of the changes have somewhat hurt the game. The hardest thing in the game that I've accomplished recently was CoP, and that was after the nerfs. It was still a pain in the ass but not at all as bad as pre-nerf. I have the up-most respect for those who completed this pre-nerf. I miss the good old days when exping lvl 30-35 jobs in GC was not just a job, it was an adventure. It MADE people do their jobs and MADE them pay attention.

that's what I meant lol...I'm sucking with words today

Old MMO, not much new content to keep the devoted populous going, etc. Happens in ever game, although for some reason, not Diablo II. >_>. That user base has been going at about the same pace for a very long time now. Not to say I enjoy it anymore, but I still know a large amount of people who love it to this day.

I stopped playing for a month or so, mostly because the game itself doesnt really offer any great, hard, epic fights at all. Plus that the gear you get only helps you a little bit.
(However if you managed to kill the monster without the stuff he drops, it more or less becomes "unnecessary" to get them.) On the other hand I play with alot of cool people that I missed, its weird, but I really did miss the guys I play with, so thats why I came back.
Tho the game really needs a new phase, where its really needed to be a tight group, with skill and great teamwork to be able to win. (Hell people still do dynamis at a regular basis for christ sake... Me included...)
Salvage and Einherjar in all its grace - but honestly its not really that hard, it does get monotonous, (if thats a word), fast and the gear you get doesnt help much at all.
For people playing solo, herald, w.legs etc etc helps alot, but imo mmorpg isnt about playing solo, its about pushing the boundaries and win the internet....!
Perhaps its where we are now, the game is 6 years old, and its really hard for SE to just let loose and give us awesome stuff to do, with rewards that would make it possible to duo or solo Nidhogg. (Well, yall know what I mean...)

Aslong as the guys I play with plays I most certainly will aswell.

We did it in 9 days iirc pre-nerf, want an autograph? /flex :P

I myself haven't been playing FFXI as much as I used to too, but then again, with this new full time job, I've been too busy working to play it much, but even when i have free time off i try to play other games sometimes or watch a movie instead.

The only thing I really do now in FFXI is campaigns to rank up to the top and that can get repetitive. Although I still don't want to quit FFXI yet since I eventually want to do some of my goals, but the game isn't as fun or has that feeling it used to back then when I was still new to a lot of things.

Just like any game though, a person gets really into it for some time and it's something really great that needs to be completed. This interest could happen for a few days, a week, or a month or more, but then something else comes along and you stop playing that game.

FFXI on the otherhand can hold most people's interest for quite a long time, but like all games, eventually that will fade too unless there's something completely new. I think more people will either come back or be around once there's more new content from WoTG though, but FFXI seems to be lacking with their updates even.

one good thing about FFXI that will always stand out is the opportunity to try out a new class/job without having to reroll and get all your items, fame, etc. all over again.

Downfalls are that, soloing still isnt an ENTIRELY viable option. I think for people who want to play "casually" this is a real downside of the game. I for one, prefer to party, it's a lot more fun and dynamic, but there are days where i wish i could just log on and get some solo exp for maybe 30-40 minutes (often times the time it takes to MAKE a party). Square Enix could implement some pretty simple things:
1.) reduce the exp loss when soloing
2.) perhaps allow soloing, but create a maximum cap or something, perhaps a bonus that makes mobs weaker when soloing for 2hrs (random idea off the top of my head). Or simply make soloing less viable, maybe 2k/hr or 3k/hr. That way people who have time will still choose to solo. Right now if you want to solo, its a lot more limited in what jobs you can choose, and its also somewhat more tedious.
3.) Need a new tanking job, or allow current jobs to tank.

i personally played this game since 2003, but as some would know, only came back recently after a 2.5 yr break (if youd even call it that). I still enjoy the game as much as before, although yes, it does feel like it's lost that "fantasy" sense that used to appeal to me so much. CoP was definitely fun, especially doing promyvion pre-nerf, a good challenge but definitely doable. I quit soon after that though.

every game's end game isnt that wonderful. WoW for one thing, for the most part end-game is pretty repetitive as well and to see the true true endgame, you often have to be in the top guild on the server, which is almost impossible to get into unless you've continually played since release.

its the people that make this game fun, and i think as long as you're the top of person who can make new friends, this game will always be fun. A lot of my old friends and guild mates all quit, but since coming back i've met some awesome people again. Only then would it make wacking crabs and fish in Qufim fun even at 3 or 4 or even 5 in the morning, and that's what makes the game stand out. =)

i've taken breaks that last a month or so every now and again for various reasons but the game generally holds my interest as much as it did before, at this point in my life theres no real need for me to put it down, maybe for some people the game doesn't hold their interest anymore or their RL situation prevents them from being able to play

You as a player, are forced to take breaks from this game/server. Be it a few days, weeks or months. Or you won't survive to see the end.

Yea. I'm not quitting anytime soon, and it's because I play 2-3 nights a week. I can't do every night or I get sick of this game. lol

like many others i stay for my friends. i too think SE has made the game a bits to easy. the road to 75 was WoW'd with ToAU's introduction. now we have far to many 75 for a server as small as ours.

Machine guns with chainsaws. That's what they need to add. That would make any game better. Except maybe the old E.T. game. Nothing could save that piece of s***.

In all seriousness though, people come to a point where there isn't much left for them to accomplish. It's pretty much impossible to recapture that feeling you have when you first start out. The whole world is ahead of you. And while it's always a great feeling to accomplish one of your goals, each accomplishment kinda takes away from the mystique of the game a little. Sooner or later, it's just not as fun or exciting or whatever. I know that's how i was feeling when i quit.

And yeah, after 6 years, people are going to move on. Be it for school, work, whatever. Such is life.

I still miss my wyvern though...

After COP, FFXI fell downhill. TOAU and WoTG are lame.

I love FFXI, and I prolly will be dragged kicking and screaming out the door when the final Darks Day happens. I play because I have many good friends, I love to explore, I love the story and sub-quests, I love to help others share the experience I have had, which renews the enjoyment I had the first or second time doing it.

FFXI is going on 6 years old, and in that time you might have some people grow up from a teenager into an adult, which brings on some new responsibility. Someone that started at age 16 is now 22-23... wow, time flies by fast :)

It is true that the story to WotG is moving quite slowly, and it needs to be stepped up a notch. Also, I agree with how some of the things have become to easy. It allow a buncha people get to 75, w/o learning how to play their job correctly.

I for one can't wait to see where FFXI goes into the future. Eventually people come back, some don't some do. Some find other games. See you in game everyone :)
