PC Users - How do you control your character ?

Hi ! I am currently playing FFXI on my Xbox 360. The controller does a great job of being able to do all the functions you would want your character to do.

Now, I have gone out and bought FFXI for the PC too as I will be working away for the next month and want something to do in the evenings. I have a simple question, how do you control your character ? Do you use a gamepad or the keyboard/mouse ? The manual that came with the game is worse than useless.

Are there are any Xbox 360 players who also play FFXI on the PC ? I am thinking about getting a wired Xbox 360 controller to use on my PC if the default controls are difficult to get to grips with.

I just use my keyboard. I can't imagine playing this game with a controller.
 
I will be playing on a laptop so I won't have the numeric keypad. Will this cause any problems ?

Also, I am more of a console gamer than a PC gamer so a controller is second nature to me. The Xbox 360 controller is superb and FFXI is VERY easy to play with it.
 
PS2 Controller. Go eBay for a USB PS2 adapter. Sorted.
 
GO get a controller. The keyboard controls for this game feel disgusting as far as movement is concerned.
 
What the others said. I have a PS2-USB converter from radio shack. As far as the default controls go, you can remap the keys in FFXI config.
 
I love my keyboard. I rarely use the mouse, but I hate using the controller on my 360. If you're using a compact (laptop) keyboard they have settings for it which I believe use WASD instead of up, down, left, and right. My friend plays on a laptop with no controller and he does fine.
 
I agree with Neyla. I tried using a controller to play when we got a 360, but it was a lot different than what I was used to, and I didn't like how the macros are set up.

Although, I use the numeric keypad on my keyboard for all my movement, so I don't know what it would be like w/o it. If youre used to the controller, then you should get a controller for your comp, so you dont have to worry about re-learning how to play.
 
i got a USB<--->PSX controler converter at radio shack for 8$, works like a charm for my ps2 controler~
 
Wow. I can't play with a controller. It feels so awkward. All I really need is the numeric pad (and of course others for macros, etc.).
 
I have only ever played FFXI on the Xbox 360 but I will give the keyboard a go. I will be playing on a 17" widescreen laptop. WASZ to move around seem sensible with the cursor keys for selecting menus, etc. If I can set it up like that then I should be ok. If I can't get used to it then I will get the Xbox 360 controller for Windows.

I play on my laptop all the time. I personally like it even better without using the keypad (maybe cause I'm used to it). You can go into config and change the settings to compact keyboard. Then its so awesome, cause you can pretty much type while doing stuff and don't need to switch back and forth between stuff.

When i used a full keyboard moving was weird for me because of that stupid 5 in the middle of the keypad. I can adjust the camera with j,i,k,l and move with w,a,s,d. When you want to type you just hit space or / if you want to type a command. F scrolls through the windows and - is still the menu. Plus the tab button is so much closer.

IMO, compact keyboard makes it so much easier to get to the buttons you want all at the same time.
 
I agree with Prothall, I like the compact keybard setup. But I'm biased because of my FPS background, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. :) I know what you're going though tho. When I started FFXI I played on the PS2 with the controller and just got used to it. But I got sick of having to switch between the controller to play and the keyboard to commincate. Now when I play on the PS2, I'm keyboard onry...
 
Using the keyboard is easy... I can't imagine playing with a controller
I've played FFXI only on PC... so yeah I'm used to using keyboard, and it's not annoying at all...using compact setup that is lol
 
I use a ps2 style gamepad. Hands down superior in every way as far as targetting and camera control goes. The rest, however, could be argued either way for preference. ^^

compact keyboard, WASD for the win.

Mouse/keyboard user here, and I don't think I could adapt to a controller to save my life. The movements are set in stone for me.
 
Gogo Keyboard onry. I play on the PS2 and only use the keyboard. You can do everything you need to in terms of conrtol, plus type quickly without going for another device. I know it seems lazy, but I much prefer running around then hitting space bar when i need to say something, get it out and contiue on, less time wasted.
