PC Users - How do you control your character ?

I use a keyboard with the numeric pad. Like someone said before, if you're on a laptop and don't have a numpad, you can set the controls to compact mode. No need for a mouse at all in this game.

I actually found a glove-like controller like that for 64 back int he day.

I beat LoZ: Ocarina of Time with it, it was fucking awesome. I think I would use one for ffxi if i had one... and if i could actually do stuff.

; ; i always wanted that thing, but my n64 days are long gone.

LOL Was that a joke? /sarcasm?

The game was created around the computer. Which is why the macro system specifically displays CTRL and ALT.

PS2 users literally slow us down. Not just from an old generation system that disallows the game from graphic updates.....It takes longer to hit macros that are 4-6 spaces apart from eachother. PS2 controls are horrible.

If you're going for "comfort" controls, go with PS2.

If you're going for "alert" controls, go with a keyboard.

You can use both, you know, Movement with the keyboard/mouse is clunky, at best. And no, it wasn't a joke. The game came out on Playstation 2 in Japan first, and foremost. The controls are designed around the PS2 Controller. Freaking pot smoking Canadians, I swear to god..

Controller allows fluid movement, which means no aggro without sneak/invis, assuming you know aggro radii..

I use both. Recently I find myself using the keyboard a lot more often for movement... it's easier to type, multi task on long runs, and during battles.

Scwall used to have a keyboard/ps2 controller combo. It was a keyboard with the directional pad on the left side, the buttons on the right, and a compact keyboard in the middle. Worked really nice until the analog buttons started to develop bad response time.

Yeah I know it came out in Japan for the PS2 first. However, I never mentioned that.

I still won't say it was designed around the PS2, as it's a multi-platform based game. Movement and party spell casting may possibly be the only positive aspects around the controller, because the macro system certainly isn't.

Controller on it's own just doesn't cut it =/

I started playing on 360 and recently installed it on pc too in my office (I work for a videogame company so everybody plays videogames at luch break:cool: ). Imo the best you could do is use a 360 controller to the pc. It is fully compatible, you can map the buttons and you will not even have to get used to a different controller. I tried to play with the mouse and believe it feels awful if u are used to a controller.

Has microsoft released new drivers or something? I installed the drivers for the 360 controller around the time it came out, but you couldn't map the back two buttons to your macro pallets. All the other buttons worked though, but thats just not good enough.

Has this been fixed?

Right hand does almost all of the work on the Num Pad of the keyboard. My left hand is mainly for tabbing through NPC (F8 is for the closest NPC) and hitting my Alt and Ctrl Macros. I only use my mouse to adjust the camera angle every once in a while.

I also have the 360 version but after playing the PC version for almost 3 years the controller just seems too akward for me.

I use Compact controls.

WASD to move, IJKL to manipulate the camera. Generally speaking, my fingers are always on those two sets of keys. This way, I can very easily switch to typing and then back to movement, such that I can often navigate through areas with aggro mobs without sneak/invis while chatting with my LS or party.

I use almost all the CTRL/ALT commands; alt-A to attack a mob (or Enter twice if I'm lagging), alt-J to choose/use JAs, alt-W to use WS, alt-E to check my equipment and adjust single pieces, alt-S/L/R/P for say/linkshell/reply/party chat, alt-B for pet commands, alt-I for my inventory. I don't use alt-M for magic very often though - usually I just type them out.

I don't really use macros that much, either <.< Even when I leveled BLM and WHM to 37, I typed out most of my spells.../ma "Cure II" /ma "Cure II" /ma "Cure II" /ma Regen /ma Cure /ma "Cure II"..........

Been using keyboard and mouse since Nov '03.
The thought of a controller is revolting.

For me, I always played on PC. And hard for me to imagin how a controler can do things faster then keyboard/trackball.

Perhaps both controler and keyboard/mouse are just as good. It jsut depend on how long you use each.

I didn't read the thread, but I thought I'd mention that you can buy a USB number-pad for a laptop with a small typing area. I've loved using the numpad setup, but if it is separate you may have trouble moving your hand over to hit your macros's.

Keyboard For Life

I cannot use a mouse in any way, and honestly, though I have tried to use a controller, it just feels terrible. I can sift through all the different menus with keyboard shortcuts so much faster and more efficiently. Actually, for the longest time I didn't macro my weaponskills because I actually felt as though I had greater control over their timing via the real menus. Mmmmm, keyboardy.

The way they setup the functions of the mouse for PC in this game sucks something terrible.... You would think it would feel like how a mouse would operate in a FPS game, but no.

I use W,A,S & D for forward, reverse & turning, and I use P,L,; & ' for rotation of camera while I move.

You hit space and it opens the text window, then those letters dont move you anymore.

I had to play with a keyboard once, and two or three people died that shouldn't have. Macros with keyboard take like 5 seconds to respond to switch sets, it's horrible ; ;

ps2 controller on pc forever!

I just press ctrl + shift + # to switch to another macro set, and then press ctrl/alt + # to execute a macro <.<; And my macroes execute perfectly fine through keyboard... heh
