Playstation's Serious side Fighting Disease

I understand what you're saying but you're ignoring valuable reason as to why we are able to do these things with CD and DVD based media.

One would need a Blue Ray Rom to extract the data. This does not exist, and if it is released, then piracy will flourish.

You think it's rocket science that we can extract DVD and CD formats ? Or some bot fairy magically puts ISOs online ?

We have DVD ROMs, and it's that simple.... There is no special machine made to extract unknown technology.

Edit: I never said PS3 is unhackable either. I said the Blue Ray is at this point of time, and how Sony would fail if they made a BRROM

Piracy requires demand. There are options to recover data from Blue ray discs if piracy is your game. Nothing is unhackable, many things simply aren't worth hacking for one reason or another. There's also no such thing as 'unknown technology' unless it's extra-terrestrial in nature. It should also be noted that the whole blue ray thing is on about as shakey of ground as it's going to get right now not only because sony all but has a monopoly on it but because it's success is based SOLELY on the HD market (PS3 being a huge chunk of the gamble sony's taking here.)

In short you marvel at it for being new tech, and rightly so. However you have to admit there's more than enough opportunity for it to fall flat on it's face and there's no piracy simply because there isn't call for it yet, the only system that can use them legally isn't making the impact it wanted. Why go through all the BS of ripping from blue rays when you get all but the same quality out of a DVD/HD-DVD, on another system by a manufacturer with products that work without doubling as a spaceheater/hotplate?

Personally i'm of the opinion it's this decade's betamax but that's just my opinion. Niche market technology should stay exactly that until pricing makes it something more. At that point and only that point do you see people even bothering with piracy specificly in the case of read/write media. It's just easier to use DVDs both for legitimate reasons and illigitimate ones and will be that way for quite some time to come.

Tag, there won't "will be," because there already are. BR-ROMs have existed for a little bit now.

And Elemmire, the PSP updates are firmware updates. You can't exactly update digital media in the same way. There is a whole bunch of problems that can crop up compared to firmware/software updating. "Patching" Blu-Ray to stay ahead of piracy will be nearly impossible. While playing burned games might be difficult. The ability to actually burn them will remain, and eventually when an emulator comes around, thats when things hit big.

I never said anything about patching Blu-Ray, that was Anttaru. I was just talking about how the PSP updating worked and the haxorzing.

And... thats exactly why I cited you. The only reason why it works with the PSP is because they're updating firmware. While the PS3 could be updated to not run pirated games, emulation would begin the height of piracy. Not to mention work-arounds for the PS3's prevention itself. And any PS3 piracy updates would be moot on any PC Game released on Blu-Ray.

Wait, Skaw, are you suggesting something akin to emulation of the PS3? . . .

Because PS3 Emulation is going to be impossible forever, m i rite? Forget the ability for cell processors in the home market eventually.

They aren't x86 compatible by any stretch, unless you have them emulate x86 themselves... which pretty much completely eliminates any purpose in using them for home PCs. Except, of course, to run PS3 games.

And no, PS3 emulation won't be impossible forever, but I get the feeling we might see a more functional PS2 emulator long before we see anything do PS3.

I know this is somewhat old, given that it's on the second page, but I wanted to post this for Anttaru.

They're not far off from duplicating the exact hack that I use with my PS2, only this time the hard drive will be outside the PS3 rather than internal like with the PS2. I really don't mean this as an "I told you so," but rather just informational that anything can be hacked.

Edit: this is also exactly how I'd rip my own PS2 games to ISO's and how I said people would be able to make ISO's even if there was no blu-ray DVD-ROM's for computers.

Yes Bajaratt i realize that is how you did it. And i regret taking in what you have mentioned about it so slow. As far as Blue Ray's blank availability, i'm shocked that it is. Sony did create software for PS1 games. God knows the fairy in Spiro the dragon literally told me in a recorded sound clip "you're system is running an illeagal copy of the game", and never allowed me to progress to stage 2. A baked copy of Legend of Dragoon crippled my PSX too.

Being under the impression that Sony has done something to prevent piracy i was sure Blue Ray would have been like Beta Max which is exclusive. Perhapse they feel it was a mistake to make it exclusive, and today Blue Ray is available by just about every electronic media company.

It appears Sony did nothing to prevent piracy for the PS3. I won't argue with that. I'm seeing video footage of emulation being ran on the PS3, including Windows XP being a secondary boot up off the Linux inside.

I wonder why Sony makes it so easy for us to do this. Perhapse it has alot to do with making Blue Ray successful, and selling more Blue Ray discs. Does Sony collect royalties for every Blue Ray disc sold, even from other brands ? possibly, but not likely. Surly they have less interest in games booting off of the HDD, there is no money in it for Sony. But there is billions to be made from Blue Ray. Enough for everyone who prouduces them.

like Beta Max which is exclusive.

Which is dead. Seems like a good choice, doesn't it?

Not really, Beta Max paved the way for the much cheaper VCR. It was the 1st of it's kind. It did make billions and up to this day it is of higher quality than VHS.

Sony took the bullet for the rest of the electronic companies. Movie companies tried to sue Sony but failed. That is when the VCR came about. It can Fast foward and pause, the tapes were longer and it was cheaper.

Being exclusive never killed BetaMax It had a good 9 year run.

it never actually "died" as most would use it for higher quality things.. mostly tech freaks :P so it isn't "dead" as much as it isn't "mainstream"

In the same boat as vinyl records then.

sup DV tapes. Why bother?

That is correct Elemmire. When i went to college one of the items provided in our starters kit was a Beta Max tape. It's no match for DV tape. But it is the next best thing.

In the visual feild, we all frown at those who diss Beta.

EDIT: Yeah and DV tape was also supplied in that kit I thought i'd mention.

Beta is a tool for professional use in todays world. VHS is cheap and bad quality.

Now Blue Ray is new. If that were successful Sony would have been in an interesting position. But most likely it would not have been taken seriously seeing on how much respect they recieve from the coutch potato (Who they cater too) for Beta.

Edit: If Blue Ray was exclusive that is.

Return of the Dreamcast
On February 16, 2006, Sega once again began selling Dreamcast consoles through its online store, Sega Direct of Japan. The package deal included a refurbished Dreamcast, a cell phone card, and Radilgy — a new 2D shooter game by developer Milestone. A short time later, developer G.rev followed that game with a second new 2D shooter game called Under Defeat in March. Both releases were for the Japanese market alone. While the refurbished package has been discontinued, Sega Direct does still sell several Dreamcast software titles.
