Playstation's Serious side Fighting Disease

Well there are alot of concepts online for a portable game cube. Talk says it's a gimmic. Some are more well done than others. I'd like to get my hands on one though. Gamecube has pleanty of life in it still.

I wanna know why people think that PS1 died as soon as the PS2 came out.. SINCE THERE WERE STILL GAMES IN PRODUCTION FOR THE PS1 >.> Granted shortly after they stopped creating new games but they still produced games for the PS1 and sold them off. And I'd agree that the PS1 still lives on in the PS2 and PS3 just as I agree that Nintendo Gameboy still lives on in the DS.

You contradict yourself yet again Tagrineth. Dreamcast is more powerful than PS1, and PS1 is still whooping Dreamcast.

It's become you're job to counter me it seems. Don't let you're urge to best me (which you have yet to do) blind you from the actual fact of the matter.

- PS1 Sold more units
- PS1 sold more games
- PS1 has more games than Dreamcast
- PS1 is available in PS2 making it live 10 years total
- PS1 is available in PS3 which is a garunteed 15 years total
- PS1 is the first of Playstation that keeps on coming back and being a success. Unlike Dreamcast.
- Dreamcast ended Sega's conquest to become number 1
- Sega has been demoted to 3rd party.
- Sega use to diss Nintendo and Sony in their advertizing campaigns so if Sony and Nintendo tells Sega NO! Sega will crawl to Microsoft which might have Microsoft feeling dirty.

I have been aware that Dreamcast has been kicking in Japan for quite some time now. But don't think that means they can touch the top 3. These are facts i'm pointing out, so that dosn't mean a hate Sega.

It's not important if "you think" my statement dosn't hold water, as you say. Stop trying to knock me down already. It feels like a weak 3 year old trying to kill me with a baseball bat, and i feel pity.

Anttaru, you fuckwit, if you're going to argue don't make assumptions.

I don't put Dreamcast in the same "generation" as PS1, Saturn, and N64. It was released four fucking years after PS1.

But, at the same time, DC was released a year before PS2 and two years before Xbox and Gamecube.

It's sort of a "nexus" system, its own generation if you will. If anything, though, it should be placed into the PS2/GC/XB generation (in which case it does break my rule, which is meant to be humourous, a concept which also totally eludes you).

God, you're such a bitch.

Edit: Oh, and PS1 having an 11 year production run doesn't mean it's been alive that whole time. PS1 stopped getting new games worth shit within a year of PS2's release.

Edit addendum: and the Intellivision is actually the longest-lived game console ever, having been released around the same time as the atari 2600 but still having new games released through SNES's launch.

Agreed. It did seem to be on trail while Sega advertized it. I can't remember how Sega advertized it though. It must have been a time i was taking a very long break from television cause i was too busy playing baked CD's in my PSX.

When the Dreamcast was released, it was pretty expensive for a console. Sega wanted a hard image too early. Atleast Nintendo's commercials never frightened parents which probably gave Nintendo an excellent marketing edge.

Playstation became popular with an underground feel through Magazines like Game Pro, with very little help from the internet. I remeber drooling on those books with my clostest friends, and we'd be like "What's that for !? Sega? OMG Playstation !? again !? no way it's a bloody dream machine ! The conversion from SNES to Playstation was very exciting, There is not enough hype. I miss the hype which we don't have today.

Then you see FFVII on TV, which in fact made the Playstation. It wasn't long before everyone knew the 64 should have been CD ROM based cause it would have been the Ultra64 we were exspecting. Still the 64 had it's master peices.

All this bable is old news. Looking back at old generations truly is a sign of dissapointment for me. The wait for the next smash hit has been too long and it will continue to be for awhile it seems.

Tag.. that's opinion with the "games worth shit" crap.. games were made for it still.. therefor it did still live that way.... whatever though.. it's a rather dumb arguement anyways.. as far as I'm concerned it's just playstation and 1,2,and 3 are the upgrades like any PC really.. of sorts...

"Games worth shit" aka not casino/child-oriented licenses/extreme budget titles, or random postmortem fringe shit.

By that logic, Dreamcast outlived PS1 pretty handily, as a new Dreamcast game is slated for release very soon.

really? XD I didn't know anyone was still making dreamcast games.

You've got to draw the line somewhere, Anttaru. Saying the Dreamcast was in competition with the Playstation and Nintendo 64, as well as it's own predecessor the Saturn, would be like saying the Xbox 360 was in competition with the GameCube and the Playstation 2, and the Xbox. While they're all video game systems, the Dreamcast effectively started the previous generation of consoles. It really had no competition, other than similiar competition colored TV sets had against black and white TV sets at the time, or CD players with Tape Players.

Ok so that year Dreamcast was released dosn't count cause PS1 and N64 were just about done with a year to go, and Dreamcast in no way effected them nor did they effect Dreamcast.

Seeking help.

I'd like to mention what i'm doing is not illeagal as i own the original copy.

I'm trying to rip a Game cube Disc right now cause i'm bored, has anyone done this and if so i'd like a hand.

I've read alot about it and very few claim to have pulled it off.

1st these game cube discs which are said to be minin DVDs do not regester in a DVD ROM.

2nd I followed 1 method that involves using a software called Clone CD. I followed the direction and allowed the software to close the tray with the cube disc on it.

I then commanded it to write the data to a destination of my choice.

The process started but not 1 byte of data has been extracted out of over 5888 log reports so it says.

2nd method sounds more promising, but i do not own a copy of Phantasy Star online and a modem for my cube.

Onward...

I've seen a few post of people not knowing where the Dreamcast was suppose to compete. The very first paragraph on Wikipedia reads:

Wikipedia said:
[Sega Dreamcast]...was Sega's fifth and final video game console and the successor to the Sega Saturn. An attempt to recapture the console market with a next-generation system, it was designed to supersede the PlayStation and Nintendo 64. Originally released fifteen months before the PlayStation 2 (PS2), and three years before the Nintendo GameCube and the Xbox, the Dreamcast was generally considered to be ahead of its time and was initially successful at restoring Sega's reputation in the gaming industry. However, it failed to gather enough momentum before the release of the PlayStation 2 in March 2000, and Sega decided to discontinue the Dreamcast the following year, withdrawing entirely from the console hardware business.

As it appears to me, the Dremcast was not to compete with the N64 nor the PS1 but put them to rest or add a twist of new. What really happened, imo, it was something to keep people occupied until the next gen. of consoles hit or even be a leader of next gen. consoles. SEGA maybe saw a window of opportunity to make some money. I may have my facts wrong so please correct me if this is not true, but Sony had not, at the time of the Dreamcast's mentioning, even spilt the beans in the slightest of their being a PS2 about to hit shelves. However (back on the main point), it did become bigger than the N64 and became the second highest selling console shortly after its release. I think there are two contributing points that kept it from rising above the PS1.

1) It was four years BEHIND the PS1. The PS1 had the hardware and games of four years to the Dremcast. When the Dreamcast came out, the PS1 was still kicking giving it even more leverage. Also, people knew the PS was here to stay, because of its previous four years in good standing, and they wouldn't get the ever so hated short lived system.

2) SEGA had basically canned themselves with their loldecision making on the Saturn. When you make decisions as poorly as SEGA did, there is no righting them and no way to make third party businesses give you another shot. When we take a risk, as average normal money making individuals, we're out a few hundred bucks, usually. These businesses are out millions, if not more. So is the risk worth it? A smart company says no, always. Never play the luck game when that much is at stake especially when you know a solid company with a good reputation is about to launch a "no worries" system for you to have at.

Was the Dreamcast *suppose* to compete with the Playstation and N64? No, it wasn't. Also, it wasn't meant to shelve them ither. It was just somethign else to do, it seems or *suppose* to be a leader of next gen. Did the Playstation and N64 play a role in keeping people away from the Dreamcast? I do not think so, because it was released so far behind them putting it soley in a market of its own. I think had the Dreamcast been released with the Playstation it would have blown it away(it did have advances over the Playstation so this might not be a fair way to look at it). It was already heading in that direction, without even having the third party businesses backing them like they had in the past, but just didn't last four or five years like the Playstation did due to Sony dropping the nuke that is the PS2.

As for the Playstations ending, or as I like to refer to it, upgrade. The Playstation was put to rest when the PS2 was put on shelves. Though the software and some harware is back compatible, that doesn't mean the Playstation lived on. The softeware did, but the system was out of date. I still play SNES games but that system has been long done. It wouldn't be right to say the SNES continued because I'm still playing the software on PC, now would it?

Does software production mean the system is still going? To me, no. Companies were finishing up games made for the Playstation but the Playstation itself was over and it's predecessor's time had begun. This happens a lot because of how long it takes to make games. It's not an overnight process in which when you get news the system is being changed or dropped you can halt the game and change its formats. Also, the money factor. The investments of the game's creation has already been made therefore, they need to be finished to see the money back. Luckily for Sony, they thought of the people still creating games and made their system backwards compatible. I'm sure that, also, was a strong message to third party developers that Sony was on their side.

To Ele: The Dreamcast is ehhhhhh, different. I don't really know how to explain it as no system has ever really been discontinued then revived, to my knowledge. New games started being developed and produced in Japan, not that long ago, but I'd still say the Dreamcast is dead in terms of competing or being fully "revived". Based off of my findings on the matter, I think what is going on is a few testing and scholarly tech. companies just enjoyed the Dreamcast so much they wanted to work on a few games for it for fun, nothing big. These games are continuing to be made but they aren't in big numbers, just a few games here and there.

Would you say the same thing about the 360? It was released a year before the Wii or the Playstation 3. Does that translate to it attempting to be in direct competition with the Gamecube and the Playstation 2? Nah, that was the original Xboxs job.

The difining reason Dreamcast was the spark of the generation after PS1/N64/Saturn was that it had full 3D Hardware rendering. As opposed to the Playstation and N64's very limited(By todays standards) capabilities.

Personally, I feel that if it had DVD capabilities, the Dreamcast would have blown the PS2 out of the water. That was it's only true drawback, as far as the system itself goes. To me, the games were great, as well as looked a lot better than the early PS1 games. GD-ROMs were pretty friggin pointless. Not much larger than a CD.

Let me rephrase that. I meant to say "assumptions about my argument" because he assumed I had his exact same viewpoint of "dreamcast was part of the PS1/SAT/N64 generation", which I did not, and he attacked me based on that assumption.

That work for you?

Dreamcast is one of the handful of examples of a "half-generation" system, IMO. The 3DO, Jaguar, and CD-i fall into this category as well.

And Skaw, a CD's maximum capacity is 700MB while a GD-ROM has ~200MB of CD space and ~800-1000MB of GD space, totaling a little over 1GB. That's more than a CD-ROM, and the clever trick with the GD-ROM is that the GD data is all past the halfway mark on the disc, which guarantees a much higher data read rate and shorter seek times compared to a full sized disc.

Fun stuff.

I dunno.. I'd say that the dreamcast was against saturn, N64, and PS1 as those were the systems out that were selling and games were selling for. Saturn games didn't work with Dreamcast so they kinda competed against each other.. XBox 360 didn't REALLY compete against the XBox as some games (mostly the Xbox only games that were really popular anyways) worked on the XBox 360 but I'm sure someone bought an XBox instead of an XBox 360 cause it had more games they wanted to play and those games didn't work on the 360 *shrugs*. A system from the same company CAN compete with an older system really when the newer system isn't backwards compatable I'd say.. cause that would perhaps, decrease sales a bit.. as the older system might have more games a player wants and they know they could play at the time they bought it so ya.. if I'm not making much sense right now it's cause I'm exhausted but saying a system from the same company won't compete with the older system isn't entirely right I'd say.. maybe not too big a deal but there's some competition (minor but some..)

One of the main reasons for the Dreamcast lacking in third party developers was because of what they did with the Saturn. By the time Dreamcast come into the market, you'd be hard pressed to even find a Saturn's box for sale. The only way to have gotten a new game, unless you were lucky, was to buy a used game and used games sales are soley a store profit, it doesn't help SEGA. New games only help the company [SEGA] IF they are being bought often which the store, in return, orders more. The two systems could never compete as the Saturn was over before the Dreamcast launched. Why would someone buy a discontinued system? Sure the Saturn had its titles but rather than buying one, knowing it's over, the vast majority of people would either look to the next system or another company's system. When dealing with marketing and sales it's not a matter of what a few people will do, it's the popular majority. The Saturn had already failed the popular majority due to the sucess of the Playstation and N64, obviously, so by the time Dreamcast launched, the only retaining competition the Saturn brought to the table was the popular majority's doubts about SEGA and whether or not they should put money into something that may have the same fate as their previous efforts.

Now, let it be known, I do think some companies have two items for competition every once in a while however, I do not think the Saturn, given its production history AND failure to compete with what was currently on the market, and the Dreamcast could ever have been under this extremely rare case. Companies only do this to decide which is the better product to keep in production. Had that been the case, I'd agree with you, but the Saturn was done as soon as SEGA announced they were prematurely ending the system's production and pissed A LOT of important people AND consumers off.

Well another downfall of the Dreamcast is that it launched with great games... that you couldn't play because some of them were just packaged blank disks. I remember my buddy getting a Dreamcast and thinking it was broken because a few of the games he bought couldn't be read by the machine...... What??? You mean those disks are blank???? Who would sell something like that with all the pretty pictures and no way to see them on your TV???????????????????? The VMUs where the best thing since sliced and wrapped American Cheese though.

I wouldn't say it's the same case for 360. For Microsoft to release the 360 sooner than the others was definatly the right thing to do. What better way to brace for impact for the next generation, than to have a larger library of games, and for developers to get to know the system. "Early release" is the 360's edge, it allows developers to tap the systems greater potentials sooner.

Sure, the Dreamcast was indeed more powerful than the N64 and the PSone combined. 7 or 8 years later we play Soul calibur III and it's nothing the Dreamcast could not have done.

DVD capability was indeed a selling point to the PS2. If Dreamcast had it they would have been taken for the pioneer of DVD consoles and would have done alot better.

Well it was Nintendo and Sega's mistakes that made the PSone successful. If Nintendo went with a CD rom, then they would have gotten Final FantasyVII. And if Sega took care of their systems rather than releaseing and droping them before their time, then alot of 3rd party would not have gone to Sony to make their primary CD Rom projects. Also it has been said by developers that making games on the N64 is difficult and it lacks so much storage. PSone kept it simple and it had tons of storage on those Compact discs.

Never read or heard of anything like this. Also, I'll agree on the VMUs. I can't believe no one else has capitalized off anything *like* that yet.

I also don't recall ever reading anything like what lolshaunessy described.

They had writing problems at startup i recall. Altho its not a unique thing. I bought a PC game last month and it ended up being a blank disc with nothing at all on it. Took it back for an exchange and it worked.
