Ive just recently got into pld and I luv it so far, I have 3 good PLDs (Kile, Badman, Palidine) givin me advice and is helped emensily. But im lookin to the masses for any other info that can make me a better PLD. Armor, stats, hate managment tips, anything else that can possibly help me and anyother potential PLD that will read this. Links to guide help but I want some personal experiences also.

1-50 pld go into as much VITas possable 50-55 vit and def
55-60 def (u need it on crabs)
61+ i went into def/ HP and started getting more then galks as a hume with still more MP :P
pld af some how is great better then the jse at 72 ish 1 of the only jobs where AF>JSE

ok right now im lvl 46 and my vit is 54+26, +32 with tacos +28 with boiled crab I use tacos on pts that are worth it plan on using black curry more after 50.

Well what race are you?

Elvaan and Galka need to focus on having some type of MP gear pre 60. I personally used Magna Gloves (or w/e they're called) til my AF Gloves. Worked great. As an Elvaan I had to worry more about having HP than the crap VIT you get from the low lv VIT rings, so I used electrum rings. +40 MP > than +40 HP.

Humes, Mithra, and Tarus never seem to need to worry about needing MP gear. Humes are normal average PLDs, able to have a good amount of MP while being able to do a lil decent dmg to keep hate. Mithra need extra STR or ATT gear early on since they're aren't exactly the brutes Elvaan are. Tarus need all the +HP gear they can get.

Golden Rule for any PLD: Best DEF gear > Best ATT weapon.

Upgrading your sword is last on the list when it's time for new gear. Worry about the body and legs first, then the hands and feet, shield, and then your sword. Since you're not a dmg dealer you need to make sure your def rivals the att of the DDs.

I focused on DEF + MP since more MP meant more Cures which meant more hate. If you think losing 20 or 40 HP is bad, think about how much the monster hits you for when exping at lv 40. It's not going to make a difference in the long run, since with that extra MP, you can Cure yourself more.

An addition to Max's post.....I watched my bro go to PLD AF feet with the Kaumph (sp) feet armor as an Elvaan PLD, and he will swear that from 29 to 52 that is the best armor for feet as an any race PLD you can get. He is now a 62 PLD and I'd take his word on that.

Heres what I did as a galka pld in each slot:
Head: Kampf > I.M. Armet > AF
Body: Kampf > Brig > I.M. Cuirass > AF
Hands: Kampf/RSE for MP swap > AF
Legs: Kampf > Cuisses (I think thats what they're called) > AF
Feet: Kampf > AF
Earrings: Drones, all the way till Hospitaler. Bloodbead are nice and all but not worth the money till endgame.
Rings: VIT rings, Electrums for MP swap. Never used Phalanx, never had to.
Neck: Holy phial the whole way, unless you can get a Promise Badge. Currently use my Republican Gold Medal when outside Bastok areas.
Shield: Kite > Jennet > Royal Guards > General's
Back: Wolf +1 > Sentinel's > Templar's for mp swap and Republican Army Mantle for Vit
Sword: Centurian's > Grudge > T.M. Espadon/+1/+2 > Gluttony > Espadon/+1 > Durandal/Dainslaif

Thats what got me from 30ish to 72. I think that equip is pretty all around good choices for any race but make adjustments if your race needs a little push in HP, especially Tarus. HP > MP gear or MP > HP gear is very nice depending on the race and which way you want to go with it.

Hate: I don't need to say Voke/Flash as often as possible, if I had to you wouldn't be a PLD very long. Make a macro that uses shield bash and sentinel, and one that uses rampart when you get it, alternate fights with one or the other, typically they'll be available to you in exp, fights in pld parties take about 2.5 min. Defender should always be on no matter what. Berserk and Warcry should be used only before a ws, and click off zerk right after ws. Spirits Within at 55+ is a good bet for damage with your WS, at 72 even when I'm only at 100% tp I still do 150 or so damage with SW, and with Swift Blade/Vorpal Blade I typically only get off 60 damage bc most of the swings miss or the damage is resisted. Cures are your best friend. You might like the whms that keep you at full all the time but they're hurting your hate gain, because you can't cure yourself for hate as often. Cure II and III till you have 150-200 MP total, after that Cure IV, however rarely cast, will also be nice.

I start off each fight in this order when there's no sata going on:
Provoke > flash > wait to be hit 3 times > cure 3 > provoke > shield bash/rampart > flash > and repeat flash/cure/voke as needed

Hope that helps.

For the most part I do most of that im elvaan and got all vit gear now but I do plan od gettin somemore mp now. most cases have a brd or rdm althout ballad sucks on mp b4 ballad 2. I am sorta tigh on money but here my curent gear
head- iron arment ( i cant find the +1,2 versions)
Body- a brigiane
Back- Earth mantle
Shield- Jennet shield
neck- medevil thing (2 vit)
hand- Kamp
Belt- Warrior+1 still
earriings- Drone ( but i experimented with the curaga earrings for hate reasons but they take to long to use but still helped sometimes)
rings- Verve
Feet- kamp
legs- (cant rememebr off hand im not online right now)

Ive been thinking about gettin one electrum ring or maybe 2 and I forget how to get the RSE stuff (idk why just never though about it). I also though about trading my drone earrings for piegoen earrings. I realize sometime il have to get the best def possible but is it ok to lose like 2-5 def on something if it give more vit on the lower def item. Also what about mnd is that only important for fighting magic using mobs.

Electrums are so cheap, there's no real reason to not get the free 40 mp to start chains with.

Drone vs Pigeon is a good arguement but I don't get how such a small amount of hp could offset the agi boost from drones (agi directly affects shield use, parry, and evasion).

Vit vs Def is a complicated decision. Anything less than a 10 def difference I doubt you'd ever notice a change. Think of the damage a mob can do to you as a a range from A to B on a scale from 1 to 100 for arguements sake. Vit tells you where on that 1 to 100 range the A and B lie, the Def tells you how likely you are to hit the lesser of the damage range. With VTs you'll see more improvement from Def gear than Vit, with ITs you'll see better results with Vit gear.

Mind is what affects a few things. It, I think, is the direct factor in your magic defense. Also, I have a theory that your flash "resist" rate is dependant on your Mnd. What I mean by that is how long the blind will last for on a mob. Very rarely does a mob actually have a full resist on flash and in fact I only remember it happening on the avatar fights. Mnd also has a mod related to your cure amounts, which will affect your hate. Every point cured is a point more of hate. I'd say that about 300 cured HP for a pld is about the same hate as a provoke.

ok from what I read on a few other threads mnd does make flash last longer and its a dmg mod for the WS I use too. but ive noticed that anything less then 10 def differance is hard to tell the differance. But the thing is if i get electrum rings I do lose 6 vit but I get 40 mp pared with the tacos I eat that give me a additional 20 or so mp thats 60 xtra mp. Thats one cure 3 or alsmot 3 cure 2s so im thinkin electums are definaly more worth it. I have about 147 mp with out any mp + and I never have mp problems if I have a refresher. Im learning the balance of how much I acually have to cure myself to hold hate and let the healer handle the rest. The only time I have a realy hard time holding hate is of we have a brd to sup up the melee and ballad really isnt that great of a song 1 mp per tick one min =20 mp thats not even a cure 2.

One thing you should be learning toward the level 40+ range is how to use equip macros to swap out equip. Namely start off chains with your mp gear on, and macro it out after the MP is used, since you've used it the reduction of your max MP won't change anything, you're benefiting from the Vit/Def equipment fully and not losing any MP in the swap.

taru know a bit on mp as galks mp suck but hp woooo and vit :P on humes and mithras all you need is a dark staff earth staff and a sword and shield marco
btw i saw this pld few nights ago he said i dont need ref and he was right he used that staff TP move for mp did good damage and fully got his mp up so try after 51 to keep staffed shield and sword on cap

Yes, the move he's talking about is Spirit Taker. Level 215 Staff, which for Paladin is the cap at level 63. From then on you *could* and I severly stress that could, do Earth Staff and Spirit Taker. I don't reccommend this because the damage output with staff is low, so hate from damage (I know it's shocking but trust me it does factor in a lot) isn't there. Also, you have the issue of your shield not leveling, and that's a big deal come endgame when using a staff all the time isn't an option.

Don't listen to anything anyone says about HP gear pre 75. You don't need HP gear. There is always a better piece of VIT gear that can be subbed where you'd put HP gear until you get Koenig. AKA, I see PLD wear 2 Pigeon Earring's at level 60, whereas they could be wearing a Drone and Merc, or Merc and Hospitaler Earring.

VIT > DEF always, because when it comes down to it, you have a whole lot more methods of boosting your DEF than you do for your VIT. Post 50, you shouldn't ever hesitate to sacrifice 3-4 DEF for 2+ VIT because you'll have Defender.

Keep staff capped, but never use it. The only time I ever viably Earth Staff tanked a normal EXP mob was when I did Perytons a bit too early for my level. Earth Staff isn't worth it unless the mob is hitting you for over 100 damage, and EXP mobs should NOT be hitting you that hard. Your sword/shield combo will not only keep hate more efficiently, but it will reduce damage more than an earth staff on standard EXP mobs thanks to frequent shield blocks.

also get a S3~S4 size shield S3 if i rember is 56~75% chance of block and s4 is 75~90 or something but s4 r hard to find bigger the shiled the better

shield size
u dont want a little bucker u want a big ass shield find u hyper link on all about it

Actually Blazn, you're a little construed about that. To put it this way: The bigger the shield the more damage reduction when you block with it, but the less often it happens. The smaller the shield, the more often you block but you reduce it by less. In general your shields as a PLD will be of the kite type, which are more toward the large/low proc rate. Leave the bucklers to the RDMs.

yeah but i use TK+2 on my pld so much as windy owns all the good exping places so i get +4 vit and that helps till koeing shield take a TK+1/+2 but not a TK

Actually, i would recomend a smaller shield until you cap your shield skill. If you're using the biggest possible shield its gonna take alot longer to level your skill. Blazn is ass backwards on most of what he's said in this thread, focus on def at lower levels, Vit at higher levels.

Uses enmity gear when you can do it without sacrificing alot of dmg/def/vit. I highly recomend items like rival ribbon at 50 until you get your af.

Eat crab at lower levels, or schallops tropicale if you you're good at your job and don't die much. At higher levels switch to tav tacos. There are other foods that you can use, but crab<Schallops<tav tacos will cover you for the widest ranges.
