Please pay closer attention...

People who go <Party><Do you need it?> usually are on the verge of desperation.

They have a PT going, someone says he has to go and the members who want to continue need a replacement quckly or people will start going afk or worse... <Disbanding Party>

I as PT Leader have gotten many good replies from <Party><Do you need it?> /tells. Some tell me PT <where?> or Need to change sub job and I will go there. Then everything is fine and we continue XPing.

Of course I've gotten many times the <Thanks for the offer, but I'll have to pass>. But we can't be too hard on people who are trying their all to keep the PT going.

My search comment always has as the first line: "{main}{healing}{Ninja} OK!".
It used to be "{main}{healing} OK!" but 65+ or so, cure 3 just doesnt cut it with PLD tanks.

However I've still lost count of how many conversations I've had that go as follows:

Idiot>> {Party} {Do you need it?}
Me>> Whats the setup?
Idiot>> PLD, Refresher, DD, DD, BLM so far
Me>> I dont main heal PLDs, only NINs, says so in my search comment
Idiot>> Pleeeease, come on man, we just need a healer.
or
Idito>> Oh... OK >.>.

Whats even worse though is if I've vbeen seeking for a couple of hours and a tell like that comes along, I have to fight myself not to go anyway and that little voice telling me "Maybe it wont be as bad as last time..."

get that voice in your head sorted out its evil

Yeah, I'm not really 'angry' or anything because of this, really just sending out a message for people to be a bit more careful on what they do, and take a little more time to read things before inviting someone.

Sure, I could have a search comment telling people that I don't want to party, but that usually doesn't work (especially at lower levels). I know, I had one up yesterday and was still getting tells from people who thought I was a nin/war. Search comments don't seem to work that well anyways, I've used them before and a lot of people just completely ignore them. Mostly when playing as RDM when I'm not in the mood to play healer, I'll put up a comment saying I don't want to main heal, that people don't see. (Yeah, I know, main healing for a RDM at such a low level isn't hard to do, and not wanting to do it means passing up parties, but I don't like doing it as a RDM. :P)

I -could- spend 3 seconds typing /anon, but have any of you that suggested it actually tried doing that around Valkurm Dunes? I have a few times before. I'd be trading the "{Party} {Do you need it?}" random tells for "{Raise} {Can I have it?}" tells. A lot of people in the dunes either assume that /anon people are people with Raise who don't want to do it, or they'll just take a stab in the dark and hope that /anon people might possibly be able to Raise them.

Past that, I really don't see why -I- should have to do anything extra to get people to understand that I don't want a party. My seek flag isn't up, my search comment points out that my job -isn't- NIN/WAR. That's why I usually ignore people who send me those invites, because I -know- a NIN/WHM is not what they were wanting or 'expecting'. The way I see it, if they're "too busy" to spend two seconds reading my search line to realize I have a WHM sub, then I'm "too busy" to respond to them, or "too busy" to go /anon. Like I said, this whole situation doesn't actually bother me, it's more amusing than anything (When leaving my moghouse as a nin/whm, I even think to myself "I wonder how many people will think I'm nin/war today?") it's really just a note to people to be a bit more careful with what they're doing.

The "just do /anon" line is not the obvious, no-brainer solution that people continually insist that it is. That kind of attitude simply serves to perpetuate the misconception that leaving yourself exposed is the same thing as putting your seek party flag up.

Not so.

The simple truth of the matter is, any time I'm doing anything in public among other people, it's useful to everyone else in ADDITION to myself to let others see exactly what I am. If I'm simply getting weapon skill, for example, I'm not interested in causing any undue stress ... or added competitiveness ... to someone in the same area camping some NM.

If I'm soloing on dragoon or beastmaster, I want to make it obvious so that people don't idly kill what I'm trying to get experience from. The information is useful.

I almost never go anonymous, unless I feel I absolutely have to. I hate doing it. I don't mind declining the odd desperate party invite, though I do admit that on very in-demand jobs (like RDM), the one every five minutes can get irritating.

The simple truth is, most people will make it plain if they want a party. The "unprovoked" invite isn't exactly a pet peeve of mine, and it's an admittedly minor nuisance ... I've even resorted to the practice of asking unflagged people myself, in the past. Still, even though it makes me a whopping hypocrite, I can't help but feel that it's not exactly the most polite thing in the world to do.

The fact that someone refused to go into hiding is NOT the same thing as them throwing their flag up. I wish we did it less, as a community. :/

The worst thing that ever happened to me along these lines was some fellow actually chewing me out for not being anonymous after I turned down his invitation.

HIM: {Party}{Do you need it?}

ME: Not right now, thanks.

HIM: .... wtf! if u dont want a pt, y arent u anon??

THAT ticked me off. -_-

too bad only a fraction of the server reads these forums. :[ your best bet is to tell them what they should do at the moment instead of telling them no or not giving them an answer at all.

I really don't understand this whole thing about a few words popping up on my screen. It's like the whole caps thing. IS THIS REALLY ANY DIFFERENT, than what this is? The internet is a funny beast, and I really don't understand why people get so fustrated over something so trivial. It's not like they are standing right behind you yelling in your ear, so why do so many people act like they are. Oh no some purple text scrolled across my screen while I was auto-attacking some enemy in a video game, and because of that my Utsusemi macro got all screwed up and I couldn't cast it and now I'm dead. Or if it really bothers you so much, set your status to away. That way you can't even get tells. This thread fails though. Really, get over yourselves.

I never said it frustrates me, bothers me, upsets me, or anything like that. I was just pointing out that some people don't really pay attention to what's going on.

Although I think it's kinda funny that you get all bent out of shape because you think I'm upset about people bothering me with tells because they aren't reading search comments or just a search line, but if you actually read my posts, you'd see that I'm -not- bothered by it, and actually find it amusing.

Pretty much the same thing there, people inviting what they don't want because they don't read, and people posting on forum threads that they don't read. :P

I was just making generalizations about all of the posts in this thread and some that didn't have anything to do with it, just stuff that I see that fits the same category. I'm not bent out of shape over it, and I couldn't care less about your personal feelings for it, it's just the way I see it. Like that line about causing undo stress on someone who is camping an NM and you're there with /anon. Really...I don't even get the theory behind that statment. Plus you're the one talking about all of these great search comments that noone reads anyways, yet you go on some splurge about /anon getting you random tells. Now this might just be me but I've farmed many a things in the highlands with /anon on and about the only tells I get are from people that see me running around and ask if I'm farming anything in particular, or possibly if I know where some certain thing is.

So yeah I read your thread, and you know what..I still think it fails.

I go /anon so people don't send me invites. So far, I've never gotten a party invite while /anon. So by my own experience, going /anon = no pt invites. Now I understand what you are saying, I just think you're overcomplicating such a simple thing. Fact is, if you are on a highly sought after job, you will get invites unless you are /anon. You can be in a party and still get invites as I'm sure many people here can attest to. By not going /anon it doesn't mean you're asking for a pt, but it does mean you accept the risk of getting invites and you certainly should understand why you are getting them. If there's 5 people in a party and the only thing they need/want is a WHM, they're gonna look for a WHM regardless if your flag is up or down. Go /anon and you wont appear in the search, problem solved.

I've been in the dunes many times /anon and I've not gotten the Raise requests like some of you have mentioned. I'm not saying you didn't, but I'm sure if you went /anon the Raise requests would be fewer than the pt requests if you have a highly sought after job.

I wish everyone would read search comments, but we all know many people don't. Many times my tnl would be in my search comment yet the 1st thing a pt leader would ask before inviting me.....whats my tnl.

Yeah, I'm one of those people that ask if their TnL is still what it says in search comments, because there have been times to where say at level 50 it will say @8000 or something and I'll invite them. Thinking that it'll be awhile before they level, or maybe there is a 47 or 48 that is 4k away from level and a few fights into the party they hit 51 and exp goes to crap, or that person that was in the party already gets screwed due to level difference. So double checking in my eyes isn't wrong.
