True, but Supercop was trying to detain five people for jaywalking. He was an idiot before the girls arrived, as far as I'm concerned. Not everyone has good experiences with the police.

I know, how dare a cop try to enforce the law, the nerve of that guy.

Where does it say he was trying to detain 5 people? I thought it was just that girl and her friend. Though even if it wasn't, like George said, he was only enforcing the law.

It's in a different article about the incident. He was already detaining one guy when he saw the four girls crossing and decided to detain them as well. They walked away and I guess that's when he decided he was one of the cops in Cool Hand Luke and that they'd better do what he said and not cross the street in the wrong spot. Enforcing the law is one thing; enforcing it stupidly is another.

so again, it's the police officers fault for trying to enforce the law.

I look forward to his next trick, like using a taser on a grandmother for littering.

If the grandmother is physically fit and attacks him, have at it. Tase her so hard her walker fuses.

It just shows how little respect kids are being brought up with for authority nowadays

Respect begets respect. Cops are either rotten, or "Good" but obligated to ignore the acts of or even defend the rotten ones or lose their jobs. So he more than likely doesn't deserve any.

Punching someone as a police officer is never an appropriate response. Professionalism should require a level head. But well, this is what you get when you hire someone with a high school diploma and a chip on their shoulder. Funny, if someone shoved me at my job and I responded by punching them in the face, I'd be fired regardless of the circumstance surrounding the shove. Maybe even tried with Battery. But I don't have the Blue Code/Blue Wall of Silence to protect me from felonious charges.

Cops aren't your friends these days, guys. They aren't even obligated to help you if you're in distress.

[Cops] aren't even obligated to help you if you're in distress.

What are you smoking? Being a cop for three years this is completely BS. You are one hundred and ten percent obligated to help distressed citizens. You are obligated when you are out on duty and when you are not. Let me repeat. Your job as an officer is NEVER. ENDING. You are on call 24/7. This is why you always carry your badge with you. You take an oath to do so, and not doing so will result in immediate termination. Unless you're already on your way to a 911 call or helping someone else, those would be the only exclusions from helping a distressed citizen. Please know your facts before you talk badly about law enforcement.

I'm sorry half but i dont see in the article you posted where he was trying to detain anyone until after the girls became aggressive towards him. You gotta stop seeing what you want to see in stories man. The officer was talking to the first man, according to the article you posted, then signaled for the girls to simply come over to where he was. Now an officer of the law has duties that come with his/her station. If you want to act like a ghetto fool and get uppity because of your perceived opinions about the police then be ready to reap the consequences.

Then you may not be clear on what the word "detain" means. When they're going one way and he wants them to stop and come over to where he is instead of going on their way, that's detaining. It may not be the police and court's use of the word "detain," but it's certainly in the realm of the dictionary meaning. When one of the girls ignored him, he decided to get physical with her.

I was LE 2006-2009 and this was not the case. Perhaps our department chose to still enforce it, because we did have people get fired for standing in a parking lot at Mobile while an old woman needed help.

Right. So she ignored the instructions of a law enforcement officer, at which point he detained her.

Next time a cop stops you at a broken traffic light, you might as well say he "arrested" you by your logic. I mean, after all, he halted your forward progress right?

As for the ruling, the irony of it is that it's inherently a defense of the discretionary abilities of law enforcement officers; the ability to not arrest people if the officer feels it is for some reason unwarranted.

under that logic i'm detaining anyone i ask a question too. If an officer tells you to stop, you stop. its within their authority to call you out for doing something illegal and/or dangerous, as per it being their job to enforce the law. If you haven't done anything wrong answer his questions then go about your business. It's not difficult. i'm sick to death of people feeding me, and themselves, excuse after excuse for hating police officers. and they all squeeky clean? hell no, they are people. but using that as an excuse to bash any cop that uses force, something they are TRAINED to do, is just foolish.

was the first man he was detaining in handcuffs? Did the first man he was detaining get punched in the face? nope. probably because he didn't act like an ass and get in the officer's face. You can give me all the definition stretching you like. the fact of the matter still is, if the girls had simply exhibited the dying tradition my family likes to call SELF CONTROL, none of this would have happened. blame shifting doesn't fly with this old man.

Move along, Cop Apologist. There was no need to punch her in the face. He threw professionalism to the wind and let it gets personal, he should lose his job. He didn't exhibit the dying tradition your family likes to call SELF CONTROL. Unless your family puts cops above everyone else in your all seeing eyes of scrutiny. But, since this was a Cop, at worst(For folks like me and you,) he gets a slap on the wrist. At best? Paid Administrative Leave(Free Vacation time.)

I'm glad your experiences with police have all been positive and that you've never had reason to believe a cop was in a pissy mood or just looking for a fight or eager to flex his authoritarian muscles because someone didn't take his badge as seriously as he thought he was due.

I must have missed the part where he told them to stop for no reason.

how about you move along cop hater. More excuses from people that have some sort of bias against law enforcement don't fly either. It take two to have an altercation, but one of the two have to start it. She started it and in the end got punched. Had he started it he would be totally in the wrong, but he didn't. every word in your post tell that you have made up your mind without looking at the situation objectively. personally i think he exhibited a shitload more self control then some of the officers i've encountered. she took a glancing blow instead of the cop using a tazer or worse, if he was very panic prone, a gun.
