The reason I say that is the game isn't what it used to be. I sat in town (Sandoria) and watched 2 players (newbies) complain about the lack of items on the AH.
They had no clue where to find them and thought the Auction system was very lacking.

I broke down and explained that they had to visit Jeuno the main city for all nations. And sadly the gear they wanted was all there. Most of us can get to Jtown due to having higher level alts and passes to fly there.

I find it discouraging for new players as I look and compare things now to the past. They seemed very disheartened. the only good thing I heard them say was "Well I still find myself addicted already to this game". Person 2 "hell yes".

if I wasn't so broke I would have given them my hoarded gear in my vault and bought more... =(

This game is incredibly unforgiving the newbies. The only thing even less forgiving, are the players.

God, I remember them days... bad times, bad times.

On the flip side, most of the gear you *need* as a newbie can be bought from vendors in the town. Since it is so simple to get decent XP now, the expensive +1 stuff isn't even close to being necessary.

New players have it a lot easier than players who started out a few years ago. So don't feel too bad for 'em.

Y'know, that might be something that they could do to improve the early game experience for people... Remove time limits on auctions in the starting cities, and separate all the auction houses from each other in terms of listing caps. That way, people can simply leave starting goods on the AH for as long as it takes for them to get bought, and in theory you'd have at least a handful of altruistic types who'd actually bother to maintain a certain amount of gear there.

Then again, I'm sure such an idea would be met with "PS2 Limitations". Or just general disinterest from the populace at least.

Or SE puts together all AHs.
No more Sandy/Rabao, Bastok/Norg, Windy/Khazam crap.
Simply Jeuno AH accessible everywhere.

Not only will this make it easier for new players that want to get some gear that is useful above level 7, but it also makes it a hell of a lot easier to PL crafts on mules without spending a fortune getting them either an airship pass or having to log the main every time I need something from a vendor somewhere else as the AH in the specific location where I am leveling the craft ran out of goods I need...

I do agree though that SE has done a lot for newer players.
Moogles in Selbina and Mhaura is one of them for example.

lol I remember one of the first means of making gil for me was to sell between AH's. Well, that and selling crystals. ...good times, good times.

On Topic: I felt bad for new players before they added level-sync. But now, new players have it so easy compared to anyone that leveled to cap before they nerfed the exp requirement (Yeah, who remembers that!?). Pre-lvl18 what gear is need that isn't available at NPC's? Starting out, it can take a while to get to lvl20±. But they should be fine with what's offered from NPC's till they reach that point and would be in Jeuno any way.

I know I'm just starting out had really had a hard time find gear for thief, but I found a great linkshell that has been helping me out and Devifoxx has been helping me out a ton. So I got lucky with friends who are taking care of me and helping me when I need it.

Most gear is available from conquest npc, vendors, or questable before you get into the expensive stuff at mid level. You can even get NM drops for your gear in many cases once you learn where to find it.

cherish that rarity.

I guess you probably forget the feeling of first time in game.

Then: When I first logged in and began my journey in Sandoria. I saw many players all about. High level and low. I began my exploration of the city and doing my mission quest. There were many bazaars up and players all around to chat with and or hang out with. As you get further along and check out the AH you see many things for sale and learn how all those crystals you just sold were good money! OMFG:crazy: you learn as you go ..getting advise from players in the area and the random high level that notices you are a newbie with no subjob and they give you some stuff or hang out with you as you stumble along outside killing worms and rabbits.

Now: You enter the game it seems empty in Sandy. (you notice the tumble weeds blowing by) and few players who seem to not notice your questions or /poke as you try to befriend someone. You venture out to the wilds of east ron and kill things and adventure about..noticing orcs hurt bad...and then realize as you run for your life 1 he isnt breaking off..2 there is nobody around when you /help. You stumble in battered and bruised to Sandy looking forward to leveling and buying new gear. You get lost and can't find out where the hell is the armor at...armory is limited..(not knowing visit leather shop).. You go out in your half naked looking character battling those pesky rarabs and beetles next...alone...and sad.

=) hehehe Ok so its not so dramatic like that..but it sums up the differences when I compare now to back then. Since I am a returning player I can compare the past to present. It does feel not so newbie friendly. Without the diligence of diging up stuff on the web or buying a used players guide for ffxi. One would be so very lost. Especially with the lack of people in the city to ask for guidance.

I feel for them because they've "missed the train" so to speak, but what seems to occur when I help them is that they sort of cling to you and keep asking for more stuff, and that's a bit annoying.

Yeah, SE's been trying to add incentives to get people to go back to the starter cities but it's not really working that well..

I don't really see how what the OP said is different than what we all did. Th
e gear sold by NPCs are very good until level 15 ( early dunes level), and starting players are supposed to spend some times in cities, levelling different jobs till 10 for crystals and learn about the game this way. They should not go to jeuno before level 20 ish( when they get thier SJ). ANd like someone said, I geared my 20+ jobs with the CP items which arent bad gears.

I've been spending a lot of time in cities lately and the AHs aren't empty lol. Maybe gear wise, but there is a tons of crafting materials there for people levelling subcrafts.

Depending on the job and nation will say if the CQ items will help. I would point out that there are many players with the mighty M next to their names. Go go mentors! If I remember correct you can search for them through help desk. It has been a long while since I have needed one. Those Beastmen also drop armors. There are quests in town that give nice free gear as well. Spatha in sandy for one revival root. If a new player kills sheep and worms they can even craft low level armors. It is more a case of just how far a player is willing to work for it. I have leveled a few jobs to 14 with only a weapon and the level 1 starter gear.

this

Also wanted to make note that it's not the act of leveling off of rarabs that got me(basty ftw!), it was the fact that if you picked basty in the beginning(2yrs ago), it was just as bad as the new and "improved" sandy. Most ppl were afk or slapped you when you checked them. Those 2 days were the worst. But in steps Sensei(that's his actual name) as rdm to save the day to pl my lolmnk.

He pl'd me for about an hour and showed me how whm wasn't the only job that could main heal. Then comes Stoneskin.... He uses it and i fell in love with rdm. Dude.... he rested while getting hit for zero!!! What the hell could i say? So I switched to rdm and leveled it hardcore till i got convert +refresh.

To this day i still walk around misc. towns looking for newbies, not because im a sado, but because of how I was accepted within those few short days.
There's something to be said about picking up a new "project on the fly" and spamming ranked quests for new-comers, meh, somebody's gotta do it.

go go gadget {Healing magic} {Skill} {up}s!!!

I dunno newbies get more exp per easy prey than we old timers ever did, its now quite possible to level to 18 in starting town areas just takes time is all. And they dont have the horror of no way to access a mog house in selbina.

Signet gives better bonuses than we ever had, you dont lose tp resting anymore as far as I'm concerned they have it easier than we ever did.

it also might help if Se would give more then 50 gil to start with. some of the npc gear is pricey for someone who is just starting out. 4-5k might not seem like alot for a whole set of gear but when you dont have much more then that it is.

And you had to be level 20 to outpost warp to the dunes. I take it back, these new guys have it easy.

Also it's tough for new players and returning players if they never opened the End game areas. I'm thinking of coming back, I was a player back in 2004. My main is a 64 warrior and a ton of other jobs leveled into the mid 20's, early 30's, and a few 40's.

It's hard finding people to do missions for Zilart, CoP to get access so one can join end game because most shells won't even invite you till 75 these day and only if you already have access to these areas...but most players won't have access to them because they won't have a shell to help lol. It's tough just starting for sure.
