I was just curious whether anyone here had any information regarding Private FFXI Servers, such as whether there are any out there that are decently reputable or how one would go about attaining the server side data in order to host such a private server.

I've played FFXI on and off since it's PS2 release in NA. Being that FFXI is more of a hard-core thing, and I tend to lean towards a more casual gaming mentality, It's been hard to justify a constant subscription.

I've been hoping to find a decent Private Server I could use, or, I've recently had an opportunity arise where-in I can house a personal server in a SAS-70 certified data center with 24/7 guaranteed power and bandwidth. If I could, I would like to host my own personal private server, for myself, some personal friends, and of course anyone else who would be interested.

If you guys happen to have any info that could help me out with this, I'd greatly appreciate it. If, on the other hand, you find this request morally or ethically offensive, I apologize. Thank you for taking the time to read my overly long post. Good day to you all.

Word on the street is there are none and the project that was trying to put them together got axed a long time ago.

I don't think it will ever happen as long as the game is pay-to-play. Various people have tried to get a private server running, but they normally end up getting slapped with a cease and desist from SE.

The reason there aren't private servers running like is commonly true for WoW, is that FFXI's server code has never been leaked, so the only crude attempts at the project were a long and arduous process of rebuilding the server code on nothing but inference of game mechanic and a lot of mySQL databasing. Like Cid said, there hasn't been a meaningful update from projectxi in a long time.

That's really too bad. Especially since I'll have a nice means of hosting. I'd try to figure it out myself, but honestly it's well outside my area of expertise. I suppose it's just as well, FFXI had a tendency to drive me a little nuts from time to time, haha.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe even with ProjectXI, you still needed an active account with SE.

That's right, but I've recently found a forum with links to files that allow you to bypass the POL login and go straight to FFXI. Their work is built on ProjectXI before the C&D. It's quite promising. Glad to see people are still working the project.

If the game went free and had private servers, I'd play in a heartbeat.

With the way FFXIV is currently set up it looks like it could make a pretty good free to play MMO. The exp curb that hits you in the face at level 30 is apparently insane. Cash shop exp potions anyone? And that stylist shop they want to implement could be bought with Crysta to change your hairstyles? I'm just saying that SE could be the illuminanti is all.

I doubt they'd ever do it, but with how the game looks now it wouldn't 100% surprise me either. Hopefully they'll fix the exp curb soon.

Cash shop games... are the cancer.

Just sayin'.

Well, Private Servers are entirely possible, but they're also VERY broken still. There are people working towards patching up the quests/missions that aren't fully functional, but the community is fragmented, with a lot of people tinkering with their own projects rather than working together toward a common goal. I suppose that's to be expected with SE raining down the C&Ds.
I'm going to try and get some information/tutorials on how to repair the database information, but honestly, I'm not a programmer, any work I do will be slow at best, haha.

Still, it should be interesting to see the outcome. Keep us posted!

I played around with ProjectXI for a couple of days a while ago (just me on my own computer). It was pretty neat, but I knew hardly any of the commands to get shit working.

I probably didn't configure my server right then, hahaha. I was a 75DRK Taru, Apocalypsing a pudding in the face without reaction.

The official PXI sorta died when SE laid down their C&D. There are still a few peeps working with the leftovers from the original project, but it doesn't seem terribly organized.
I found a forum with some information if you're interested.

Sure, start of the year's always slow and boring :)

Thanks again!
