Okay, we all know the story. PS2 begins to stop reading CD's and PS1 games. Then it slowly starts phasing out DVD's, and ultimately stops reading DVD-disc PS2 games.

Now, i've been an -avid- supported of Sony Playstation 2 for many a year. But this is my one major gripe with them: I've owned 3 (yes, Three) Sony Playstation 2's, and every single one of them, this has happened on. I'm sick and tired of it, but I love my PS2's, so I'm likely going to do whatever it takes to continue playing my PS2 games..

Being sick up and fed at paying $120+ per unit (I bought my first two, fortunately back in August my girlfriend bought me my third. UNFORTUNATELY since December its been doing this on all games except Summoner. And though I love Summoner, i'd like to play some other games), I called Sony and asked them about this. I illustrated how i've already dumped three hundred and sixty dollars into their pockets over the course of a few years, and that this has happened on each and every system i've owned. The guy told me I could either send it in, and they'll give me a new one (likely those crappy slim ones which I hate), for $45, which will take 5-9 business days to complete. Or, for $65, I can send it in and have it repaired, which will take 14-21 business days. In both cases I have to pay for shipping.

Well, fuck Sony. Fuck them in their rich, money grubbing assholes.

I've seen a few guides and write-up's online on how to solve this dillemia, but i'm a little nervous about it, as I have no real technical know-how and dont want to screw it up. But my PS2 is broke anyhow, and apparently, the laser just needs to be adjusted.

My question for you, the QCDN community, who I hold in the highest regard as friends and confidants, is this: Has anyone tried to manually correct their laser on their ps2 using one of those online guides? And if so, did it work? Is it worth it to try, because i'm willing to. I'd like to have my PS2 up and running again by April, so when I have a certain someone visit, we can game-it-up inbetween naughty things. YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.

Anyways. Yea. Thats my question. Does adjusting the laser make it play games again?

I fixed mine when CoP came out, and it stopped reading discs around november
i'm going to have to fix it when ToAH comes out.

Definently worth it, fuck paying for them to turn a damn knob.

Right on, Odon. My sentiments exactly. I actually had to get a new one for CoP, and ToAU was my main concern this time around, because I really just dont have that kind of money to toss around at the moment.

Well, thanks for the quick reply. I'm gonna rip that sucker open now, lol.

Thanks again!

Sony still has my PS2 under warranty O.o like.. forever.. I've had it since it came out. Sent it in once like.. a year back (abouts). I've got the warranty that never ends XD

I really wouldn't know how to manually correct it.. I might break something x.x

It's actually quite easy to do, just make sure you have a marker on hand to place a mark on the gear where you started from and start trying it out one notch at a time, done this several times myself after getting fed up with paying to have it done.

I forget where the guide I read with pictures and such was, but I still remember every detail of the process if you need help ^^

If this fails proceed to bash repeatedly with the biggest rock you can find.

Caveman power ftw.

Okay I got it to the point so far that it plays Summoner, GTA: San Andreas, and it plays my Willow DVD, but it doesnt play my Old School or Day of the Dead dvd, nor any audio CD's or PS1 games. Should I just let sleeping dogs lie and play my ps2 games, or keep turning? Will it stop playing the DVD's again after a certain point?

Lol I forgot to mark mine the first time I did it, I'm going to have a fun time trying to fix mine :\

I have. It's cake. Just make sure you keep grounding yourself so you don't "shock" the system. ^^
And yes, it works.

You can tune it so that it'll play everything again. Failing that, mark where it currnetly is so you can just turn it back again should you not get any better results.

Had mine for over 4 years. Stopped reading in November of 2005. Was planning to fix it, but my dog brand new pup... peed on it. SO i ended up throwing it away. Now im playing on PC.

I tried that on a PS1 that I "overclocked", so to speak, the baseball bat approach didn't quite help either.

I posted about this in one of the PS3 threads the other day, and was debating on if I should make a thread about it. I was curious if that problem just seemed to happen to everyone in my circle, of if everyone experienced it.

My PS2 recently stopped playing half of my movies, and just the other stopped playing several games.

Do you have links to the 'fix it yourself' sites?

I can't trade my PS2 in for a slim because you can't use the hard drive with them, and I'll be damned if I'm paying $40 in shipping and another $65 to have them do what I've heard is only a temp fix.

This is the only site I know of.
I've been meaning to fix up my first PS2 to install CoP and eventually ToAU. Wasn't sure if I should, but this thread sounds like an endorsement for the process, so I might give it a try.

I've had this happen twice.

First time I sent it to sony and they fixed it for free. Took 10 days.

Second time, i decided to take care of matters myself. Opened it up, sprayed the inside with that air can thing for dust, it works now. Will probably have to repeat that in a few months ;x

I would like to personally endorse this XD. My ps2 works perfectly now, plays CD's, PS1, PS2 games, and DVD's. And its insanely simple. I'd reccomend it to anyone whos having a disc-read error.

i've had my ps2 since it came out and have had no problems with it until recently, i find it reads some dvds better then a dvd player but then agian it just won't play some of them, and it won't play any of my ps1 games at all so i just have my ps1 hooked up alongside it to fix that problem :D

That's the one I was thinking of, follow it and learn it, this'll work nearly every time.

As a great man once said, "Freakin' sweet." I'm going to see about getting my old friend up and running next time im home from school.

Another thing you can try other then gear turning that fixed my ps2 is to clean the lense carefully
