PS2 game advice needed

RL friend of mine has a housewarming party.
Bunch of us got together to get things for them that will actually be useful (i.e. Home Depot gift certificates and such), however we also want to get some fun stuff. He has a 7yo son who just started guitar lesson, and a 10yo daughter, and he himself still plays D2 on a Pentium 266Mhz laptop from 1988 or so.

Anyway, point being, we decided to get a PS2 with guitar hero (for the son who loves to pretend he is a rock hero), DDR for the daughter, and what for him?

We are totally not console gamers, so no idea what's any good.
I checked gamespot and the game rankings there, but meh, no idea who's doing the rating. The guy is 36yo, I know a bunch of you played KH2 and seemed to like it, but I just had a quick look and the screenshots looked ...,well, like Disney movies of course. Is there adult humor in it?

The guy played D2 for like 6 years straight and never got tired of it (out of necessity in a way cause they were saving up for the house, so he wouldn't buy a new computer or a console).

Well that's it, sorry for the long story, PS2 RPG recommendations? Anything else someone who's a bit older would appreciate? Any good games with subtle humor for adults?

Thanks in advance. I am a bit on a schedule, party is this SAT, though it's likely I can get stuff in town.

A lot of older people play the SOCOM games. The only reason to play SOCOM is for the online, though.

Online games are pretty much out of the question as he has to be able to afk at any time for any period due to family stuff, or his wife will cut him off. ;)

If he likes War games, you can always try the Battlefield games. Battlefield 2 Modern Combat is pretty damn good. If you want RPG, there is Dragon Quest VIII, the Xenosagas, Radiata Stories, Suikoden5 etc. If you want more of a "Kick the shit out of everything you see" type game, I highly recommend God of War. It has been the first Sony game to win Game of the Year in a long time. Then there is Devil May Cry or the Onimusha series. There is even another game called Chaos Legion that was made a few years back that kept me pretty entertained. As for sports, there is Madden07 and NCAA07, as well as NHL07 and NBA07 all coming out soon. And1 basketball just came out, or MLB2K6 is good too. If he likes shoot'em up games, there is Black, Socom,

And you mentioned GameStop... I actually work for them, and sometimes the ratings are totally off, so don't go by those.

I really do recommend God of War though. It just got put on the PS2 Greatest Hits too, so its only $20, and they already have a release set for God of War 2, so if he likes it, there will be more to look forward too. And the best part of the game is you can pause any time, even mid boss fight lol

God of War is purely a testicle game. You, Must, Get, It. Its only 20$ now, and it includes tons of blood, gore, and breasts. I would suggest some of the Katamari games, because they're oh-so-fun, Shadow of the Colossus is an amazing game which should not be to hard to find, and Soul Calibur III is a great fighting game if you prefer weapons over fists.

omg you got him Guitar Hero <3 I totally love rocking out to that game at work. Gotta love Cowboys From Hell

but for games, I tend to like the retro stuff myself. I love all the Sega Classic games. They re-released some of the old sonic games in a mega collection, very good stuff. Midway and Namco came out with an awesome series of collections too, worth checking out. lol @ Joust and Paper boy... gotta love the pity houses v.v

Katamari games are a lot of fun too, I recommend them a lot to customers at my job.

As for RPGs, I recently picked up Growlanser Generations. This game is another re-release of an older Japanese RPG that is tactic based. The game works in real time which makes it all the more interesting since everything on the screen is moving at once. You can pause when you like, but it is unique. Plus it comes with two games, Growlanser 2 and 3 :) Reminds me of the older RPG's, which I much more perfer.

The games I listed above are awesome and run from 20-30 dollars :)

if he's into rpgs, likes darker plots and enjoys a challenge, the shin megami tensei games are pretty good.

if he likes long, epic stories and doesn't mind watching a lot of cutscenes, try xenosaga episodes 1 and 2.

old-school gamer? dragon quest viii got great reviews and is reminiscent of older rpg fighting styles.

the .hack series takes the online gaming experience offline. haven't had much experience with this, but i've heard good things about it.

final fantasy lover? grab him a copy of ffx, and maybe ffx-2 if he's secure in his masculinity. XD

Shadow Hearts 1, 2 - Great RPGs with a wicked sense of humor. Probably some of the best. There is a third one out, but I have yet to play it.

Suikoden V - A completists wetdream. 108 characters to recruit, over 80+ hours of gameplay and a storyline that just doesn't quit!

That's all for recent games. If you wanted to get him KH1 & 2 there is allure for more hardcore gamers out there. The storyline underneath all of the Disney subplots is really what drives the game (and the fan base).

dunno if theyre out yet,but...

Okami

Ninety Nine Nights

its been damn near two years since i bought a ps2 game, but i'll be getting those. google em.

Katamari Damacy is an excellent game, and the second one I haven't played completely though yet, We <3 Katamari. It's very strange, but hillarious and pretty challenging.

snake? whats happening? snake? SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

'nuff said.

my dad is 41 and he has all the old arcade game compilations(namco mueseum, midway classics, activision). Also all the Grand Theft Autos but may not be something to play while the wife and kids are awake XD.

Dont forget about PS2 backwards compatibility. There were plenty of good RPG releases. Vagrant Story, Xenogears, FF Tactics. i also think they re-released Chronotrigger for PS2.

um really no one posted mg1,2,3 (metal gear) alot of adult humor with alot of good dame play. Also you could try getting sports games idk if he doesnt like sports or not but those might be good also. Also try star ocean very long game and nice to play.OOO and silent hill is very fun to play!

if he likes RPGs and Comedies go for Disgaea RAWR!!! FFXII you must get D: :P but if he likes FPSs and such well I dunno.. the PC is superior for that (same with RTSs). But Metal Gear Solid games are great. Disgaea, Makai Kingdom, any of those NIS games are usually tactical RPGs and contain quite a bit adult humor. There's always GTA :P that's quite more mature rated. If you want humor though.. just always make it yourself with a friend in the game XD my friend and I joke around so much playing.

Well, the SOCOM III is pretty good not online. You could also consider the Dynasty Warrior or Samurai Warrior games if he is into like, sword to sword fighting and stuff.

Shadow Hearts was an awesome ps2 rpg. It was never really that big, but I've never talked to someone who had played it and didn't love it. Shadow Hearts 2 was slightly less awesome, but what it lacked in awesome, it more than made up for in hilarity. But yeah, definatly an rpg pick if thats what your looking for.

.Hack// or however you say it sucked hard. That was the slowest rpg i have ever played. I can't imagine going through four games of it.

Non-rpgs I would recommend are Devil May Cry 1 and 3 (2 sucked), RE:4 boner-inspiringly awesome), Eve of Exctinction and God of War were both pretty good, Gun was fun, but short and challenge-less, aaaannnd I'm drawing a blank, and my boss is yelling, so I'll post more later.

---edit---
Fuck yeah Dynasty Warriors. Thanks Trog.
