PS2 vs XBOX

Looking to hear from people who have both systems as to which they like better, and preferably also why.

Just saw Ace Combat 5, and I can't help but to think that maybe I need to get a console after all, that kind of game is just not available for the PC.

Also I only have a 27" TV, and I have always been firmly against playing games on the TV because the resolution sucks so bad.

Opinions?

Mostly I like the PS2 better.
I like some of the system options the XBOX offers, but to me, that's not what makes a better platform.

And I play my PS2 on a 13" TV/VCR combo BOYIEEEE!!!
And XBOX I play on my 36" with surround.

I still choose the PS2.

XBOX all the way. Better graphics, sound and most of all xbox has HALO.

I'm of two minds when it comes to the situation.

-You ask me what the better system is hardware wise (Audio/Video/Part Life), XBOX wins hands down. And it has 4 controller ports.

-The PS2 has a far larger library, but tends to favour quantity over quality.

-PS2 wins in the control device. While I have no qualms about the XBox S-Type controller, the Dual Shock still reigns supreme between the two.

As of late when games have come out cross platform, I have favoured the XBox, while the controller as I mentioned isn't as great for me as the dualshock2, the increased graphical capabilities, loading speed, and audio are reason enough.

It's tough for me to make a serious comparison since the majority of the games I pick up tend to be one system exclusive, but, as I said, when I do have to choose a system I lean to XBox.

erm ..., screen of Ace Combat 5 ..., what the hell ?!? Can you see the jagged egdes on the planes wings and rudder ...

I am so torn right now I can't stand it, either go and pick up a system after work, or look at the above screen, see the jaggedness, hurl, and move on with life.

It's very much an issue of what games you want to play

PC-ish games, lots of first person shooters, racers, American style RPGs...go X-Box

More Japanese style games, Classic RPG-ish games, Street Fighter-ish fighters, platformers...go PS2

I'm definately PS2 over Xbox. The hardware is shittier but the support it has from Japanese companies sells me on it.

well your options are slim, and PS2 vs XBox is moot.

I did some looking for XBox screens and Ace Combat 5 is only releasing on PS2.

Which would explain the Aliasing issues =\

I like em both a lot. The only problem with the Xbox is a the lack of a large libary of quality games. Ps2 is ok, I'm favoring it now, new GTA!!!!!! Xbox has custom soundtracks (not in enough games though). Ps2 has a crazy big libarary. Also for games that come out on 3 I ussally pick up the xobx or GCN, only cause of 4 player support and less loading time. Ultimatily it's up to you.

Someone mentioned peripherals too. I take PS2 peripherals and controls on this one too. XBOX controllers are lucky that Nintendo controllers suck even worse, so they have someone to make fun of.

HALO is awesome for sure, as are some other games on XBOX.
However, Gran Turismo series, FF series are on PS2. I don't even need anything else. Well, beer, pizza and sex, but the XBOX can't give me that.

Not cool Game Cube controllers own the rest. My personal favorite. and big props to Nintendo for making a high quality and cheap wireless controller. any good one for the pS2 or xbox rund $50, while nintendo's is only about $30. Sorry Sneaky but we gotta agree to disagree.

<3 Nintendo 4 Life. (unless SEGA drops a new system.)

It really depends on what you like to play Sculli. I don't own and X-Box, but my roomate has his in the living room, so.. I know what it has to offer. I do however own a PS2, and I've had it eversince about 2 weeks after its release (remember how everywhere was sold out or preorderd, I had mine pre-ordered and I still had to wait a little bit. There was also that thing where 1 out of every 10 PS2's were defective and didnt work. Thankfully I got a working one.)

If your a hardcore RPG fan, then by all means id say get a PS2. The sheer selection of RPG's playable on the PS2 is incredible, mainly due to its ability to play Playstation games. (another reason to buy it too, one system that can play old games as well as new is always good in my book) Backwards compatabilty rules. ^^ The system also had roughly a year lead on the other two consoles. Also, if you like the Final Fantasy series, its almost all available on the playstation format in one way or another and is only exclusive to it, out of the big 3 consoles that is. There are also other titles that are pretty much PS/PS2 exslusive. Like the Resident Evil series, the original series is just for that system. New RE games are Game Cube exclusives, but eh, its all for the best. (the new RE games are quite amazing)

As far as graphics go, some PS2 games are trying their best to push what the PS2 can do. Seriously though, if your interested in what game is going to look best and be good. Well, don't come to PS2 for that, or atleast don't come with high hopes. While PS2 is still alive and kicking, it really just can't stack up to what the X-Box and Game Cube are capable of.

If your a big sports game fan, then by all means get an X-Box, its a system overrun with sports titles, and the titles are going to generally run best (smoother) on X-box or Game Cube, PS2 just comes in last. This really applies for all kinds of games, PS2 just can't match smoother gameplay than the other two systems can.

X-Box also has the best online support. Microsoft really put a lot into its ability to play games online with other people. (personally I wish Nintendo had put more thought into this; PSO I&II could have been so much better)
Almost all sports titles on X-Box are able to have some kind of online game play with other real people. Also, almost all X-Box games for that matter have some kind of X-Box Live component, be it downloading new maps, or new vehicles or new whatever.

And now, infact I believe today is the release of the first fighting game that may successfully have online play against other people. I'm talking about Dead or Alive: Ultimate. If this game lives true to what ive read, heard and watched about it. It may very well be a great day to be an X-Box owner with X-Box Live. Supposadly(sp?) the online play against another real person will be realtime, with no hangups or lag. Techmo and Team Ninja have been working real hard on making that part of the game be as flawless as possible. Since ofcourse, getting that part right is the hardest thing to do.

As a person who's played both systems and even owns a PS2, I can tell you right now that out of those two consoles the X-Box is the best console hands down. Also, I will note that, if you want a wider game selection, Playstation 2 has an enormous upper hand, though finding a lot of the older titles may require a trip to ebay or if you happen to know a real good place near you that sells older or used games, check it out.

Basically what it all boils down to, is what kind of games you like to play.

So, Sculli, what kind of games do you see yourself investing money in?

I could probably tell you what system your better off with that way.

Sigh ..., I just wanted something to do ..., and Ace Combat looked cool till I saw the jaggedness ..., after spending a good part of the day reading up on consoles, I think I am gonna dig out my copy of Silent Storm that I never finished, and play that till EQ2 comes out on the 8th of November.

I am going to take the 8th and 9th off of work, for sure.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions on the consoles. If there were a truly exceptional game out there, that could handle some 50-ish hours of game play and still be interesting, I'd probably go out and buy a console, but I just don't see that there is such a thing.
