PS3 is hurting!

hires more like stretchingoutdemtextures

Well it can't increase detail unless it has hidden detail that the PS2 wasn't able to render, which is going to be unlikely in most cases. Either way, it really does look nice... beyond anything that last gen could run but weak for PS3.

When you play enough really good looking titles, it helps to get a bit more juice out of the PS2 titles, looking dated is a great way to get ignored.

PS2 games upscaled will look cleaner but it'll really bring out the big weakness in PS2's graphics chip - texturing. =/ Those textures look like ass in hi-def.

Edit - N64 games in Virtual Console are the same way - they run in full 640x480 instead of the N64's 320x240 - 512x384. It's cleaner but the texturing is still pretty sad. (added n64 VC comment after deciding i don't want this post to sound uber anti ps3 like most of my posts do)

Software tends to balance itself out depending on what the console's owners tend to buy. Market share is a bigger audience but a system with more games is more competitors. Hence, look at the sales of timesplitters on the gamecube. PS2 had a whole slew of mediocre first person shooters which hurt timesplitters sales but excelled on gamecube with nothing else really worth mentioning.

By the logic of developers abandoning a console based on install base... there'd be no new consoles and no launch games.

The logic comes in when the hardware company secures an exclusive based on a projected install base and sales and then not deliver those numbers. Wasn't Sony projecting over 4 million installed in the US by the end of 2007? To do that now they're going to need to average about 250k in sales a month through Christmas. To a developer wanting to make as much as they can, it makes no sense to launch exclusively on the PS3 when you'll sacrifice little to nothing development-wise (and likely save time due to the 360 being easier to code for) and reach another 3-5 million users who don't have a PS3 but do have a 360.

They need to keep sucking SE's ****, because if FF goes multi-platform it will be the end of Sony. Although I have both systems, I will have to get Devil May Cry 4 for the 360 because I want everyone to know I beat the game on DANTE MUST DIE mode. =D

Fire, you keep talking about the fail rate of XB360 and how that is keeping you from getting one. Also, you claim that 360 units shipped isn't really true since you say many people have had to replace theirs, so the numbers can't be true. If you want to take that route, then I have to remind you about what happened in December with the PS3. A patch Sony released killed off over 40% of PS3s that were sold up to that point. If you want to say that 360 replacements don't count, then just keep in mind that the numbers Sony shipped is also no where near what the amount of shipped units say because 40% of the sales from the first 2 months had to be replaced. Talk about a fail rate...

One of Sony's early patches killed off a shitload of PS3s. I believe the numbers were around 40%. It was 40% worldwide though, so split between US and Japan. It wasn't so much a console problem as it was a patch problem, but still a problem. I will find info for you.

<Sony> Oops, we just bricked a half million peoples' $600 investments

never heard of it either.

I may eat my words on this but I'm really thinking that this never happened. 40% of consoles going boom, boom with one update would have been pretty big news.(unless that console was xbox 360, in which case it would have been like... "tuesday")

Actually, I remember something about a PS3 patch killing some PS3's, but I don't remember it being a huge number like 40%.

I'm not saying this didn't happen but... when I was installing Linux I was ultra paranoid about bricking my PS3 and the linux guys were telling me you can reboot a PS3 to its original state through some method and it will be as if it just rolled off the assembly line. The way it was explained to me... the PS3 is unbrickable. Not sure how that's possible but... I've never even heard of a PS3 getting bricked.

But maybe I wasn't paying attention when it happened?

Now imagine if Wii wasn't STILL SUPPLY CONSTRAINED.

Edit: interesting that Xbox Classic had the highest early adoption rate but it leveled off very fast. Wii is so far the ultimate juggernaut of consoles. SHould be interesting to see how this year plays out...

I'm still looking around. I know it was a shitload of PS3s, still trying to find exact numbers. Maybe it was a Japan thing... I'll keep looking.
