PS3 is hurting!

I think they're overpriced because they're overpriced. It's not just that the downloads have been widely available free for years but that the legal price is more expensive than the physical media that's still available.

Well, according to him they're overpriced because you can just download a rom; apparently if it's not legally free it's a waste of money.

When you can buy the cartridge and the system to play it on for almost the same price as the Virtual Console download, its too expensive.

The console + cartridge isn't ridiculously cheaper, I'll pay the 1 dollar more(at the most for most of the games) for the convenience of not having to go find a SNES to buy along with having to actually find the cartridge somewhere, on top of having both the game and console guaranteed to work and stay that way. Nintendo's got the best track record, but even after 15 years I'm sure their hardware will fail. Plus, I don't have to deal with storing everything when I'm not playing the games. Hell, a used SNES runs over $20 usually, so just buying that is the same as 3.33 games.

Yeah, I'd like if the games were cheaper, but only because I'd buy more of them. I can still get 6-12 excellent games for the cost of 1 game now, that's a hell of a deal; even if I've already played them before. The games still aren't nearly as overpriced as you're making them out to be.

Edit: I also have to appreciate the irony that only the people who bought PS3's think that the virtual console is overpriced. Guess they'd know, huh?

You don't even need the console. If you have the cartridges alone, you're 100% legally entitled to operate the roms. To boot, I don't need to buy the wii controller to play the things.

As for the question of value, I'd say that for all the features combined in one package, PS3 is an excellent deal. If you see no value in blu-ray, no value in wireless(and wired) internet modem, no value in HDMI ports, no value in a 60 gig harddrive, no value in free online multiplayer and no value in an extremely powerful next gen console with an excellent record of stability with a top of the line first and second party lineup to support it... then yeah, you aren't going to get your 600 dollars worth. The only comparative system, 360, would cost substantially more to beef up to have the ps3's features and without being standardized cannot take full advantage of them... as in, their games can't run on HD DVDs or use hard drive space since they aren't the standard.

That's still dependent on actually being able to find the cartridge, which for some games would be hard to do. On top of that, not all roms actually work, even the ones from the "good" sites.

Hell, there aren't even emulators/roms for some of the games that are on the virtual console, so your only option would be to buy it on the VC or spend a lot more time/money/effort tracking down the actual consoles and hoping they work.

Not quite. You're entitled to one back-up of software you own. You have to make it yourself. And you can't run it on an emulator, because that falls under and goes against Reverse Engineering laws.

I've got some basic knowledge of Intellectual property(although I'm no expert by the in IP or law in general, but I do know the basics of what's of interest to me), you can download a backup copy of a game you own, as long as you don't have multiples. This is why rom websites are allowed to function under the legal premise that the person downloading promises they own the game.

Furthermore, I think Sega already set the precedent of what a ported game is actually worth.

http://www.amazon.com/Sega-of-Ameri...24?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1175146327&sr=8-1

When the games are going on a PS2 port in collections for 20 bucks, and then Nintendo is offering the same games as a download for hundreds of dollars... something is wrong.

The funny thing is, Nintendo isn't overcharging nearly as much as Sony is. Grand Turismo HD much?

Currently free. Research much?

And GT HD isnt GT5, its a seperate dealy. They wanted to make it so you could create your own virtual vehicle to race against friends and other people online. Thats not been implimented yet.

Oh, so they scrapped that retarded idea for a game and just made it a demo, brilliant. I stopped paying attention when I found out the game would cost around $1,000 for everything; sorry if I didn't give a shit about keeping track of the biggest overcharge in gaming in a game whose series I hated already. Guess they realized they could only gouge PS3 owner's pockets so much and GTHD finally crossed the line.

Oh, and fire, you're still ignoring how you'd actually have to find the cartridge for you to "legally" play the rom; plus the fact that not all of the consoles even have emulators and there's NES games that can't be emulated correctly still. With the VC, you're paying only slightly more for a game guaranteed to work and without having to spend a ton of time looking all over the place for the games. It's a convenience.

Owning a rom is legal, I don't think I said otherwise, Firestreak. Assuming you meet the conditions anyway. Playing it on an emulator that has reversed engineered a console without it's owning companies permission, however, is not. Bleem! was legal. EPSXE isn't.

Cartridge-based console emulators are bulletproof legal, actually. None of them require a proprietary BIOS file.

ePSXe requires the proprietary BIOS from your PS1 to be legal.

On a sidenote: Who actually cares about breaking the law on roms and emulators? I mean it's been so long since these consoles were released that i doubt even nintendo or sega care about it.

Although Baj does have a point about compatability of roms and such. I find generally using more than 2 keys at once while playing a game on an emulator is impossible, meaning if i'm playing metroid i can't aim diagonally with a rocket launcher and fire since that would require pressing 3 buttons. Also for chrono trigger there is a part where you have to hold L+R and hit A(?) which isn't possible without a controller.

I mean i suppose on the flipside you could just get a PC controller, but the VC is there and saves you finding carts (if you care about being legal), emulators and roms.

If having a starbucks on the other side of the road so people don't have to cross it or make a U turn can turn a profit out of convenience, i fail to see how the convenience of not having to run around for all these emulators wont.

PS3 fanboys - "OUR SYSTEMS DICK IS BIGGER!!!"

xbox 360 fanboys - "NO OUR SYSTEMS DICK IS BIGGER!!"

Wii fanboys - "WE'RE TOO YOUNG TO KNOW WHAT A DICK IS!!!"

just play the fuckin games you enjoy on whatever system...

ill prolly end up owning all three, cause they'res games i like on xbox, and theres games i like on Wii and theres games i like on PS3...its nice to have a little variety in your life or you'll end up like one of those losers who have argument upon argument on coke tasting better then pepsi when they have an entire house full of coca-cola merchandise, its sad really that people find it neccessary to nit pick every little thing to try to prove that their side of the play pen doesnt smell as much like shit as the other guys side.

Fixed it for you, most of the people who own Wii's aren't little kids.

Yeah I don't bother with the whole console wars crap. All it is, is something to entertain all the fanboys. I usually end up gettin all three systems eventually and if something comes out that I want to play, I don't have to deal with the whole "not being able to get it because its for that system that I don't like and I have nothing better to do than bash it for over 100 some odd pages on a forum site." They all have benifits and weaknesses. There is no perfect system as long as one system has something the other doesn't and vice versa. So far all I got is Wii (and yes I'm 23) but I'll eventually get 360 and ps3 whenever some extra money rolls around. I too enjoy variety.

Not sure what you're talking about, but GT is just a free download and it's pretty high quality... and looks amazing.

I don't know of any 1000 dollar extra charge for GT, though I imagine if it's the case, and it can effect online competition if someone has it and you don't, then I wouldn't buy the game. If you look on my list of games I've mentioned I want on my PS3, you'll notice GT is not there. Not really into pure racing simulators as much as I enjoy lobbing missiles or banana peels at my rivals.

Just because I own a PS3 doesn't mean I'm going to pay for an overpriced download. It's not like every Wii owner downloads from the VC or thinks it's a fair deal.

How about the convinence of 20 years to get whatever games you want? You squabble and argue about what games on VC you're hoping desperately to be able to download on their weekly updates, if I want a cartridge all... all I have to do is go to ebay and get it. I have access to every game ever made on any cartridge system. Access to games from different regions that were never even released here. Compares to the availability of roms, VC is a freaking joke... and they're the ones with the original software. If the game was worth 5 bucks to you in the first place, why did you wait for Wii to start selling it to buy? They've been EVERYWHERE for YEARS.

You can use a 6-axis controller if you're running the emulator off PS3.

GT HD was originally annoucned to be a completely barebones game, like 2 tracks and 5 cars. In order to "unlock" additional tracks, cars, and anything else you'd want in the game would cost you around $1-$2 per item. Looking at the entire list of what they offered, the complete game would cost around $1,000.

Oh, and on Ebay, most of the games that I would want are still over $20 for the original cartridge, and that's used. The new ones are still going for 40-50. The only games that would be cheaper are the really shitty games that no one is buying on the VC anyways. Rom's still don't always work, definitely don't work as well as the actual game, and not all games/consoles can even be emulated. You want to use Rom's, fine, whatever; people are willing to pay for the convenience, that doesn't make it overpriced to anyone but you.

I enjoy the economical side of it. looking at consoles strengths and weaknesses and predicting how well it will do and such. Not that it is much better than screaming "ZOMG 360 OWNS PoS3!!!! lolz!!!", as i suppose i still involve myself with the "console wars", but at least i'm entertained and not retarded like alot of fanboys lol.

Although that said at the moment i really wouldn't touch the PS3 with a barge pole given it's price and games and such. I fully admit that at some point i'll probably end up getting one when it has had a serious price drop and some decent games come out, but as it is at the moment you'd have to pay me £500 not the other way around.
